Whatever stage of life you're at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you'll create positive changes in a poor and remote community.
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17~24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25~75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community's access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you'll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who'll become your lifelong friends.

“Runners, on your mark. Get set...” Bang! And I was off, along with other teenage runners from high schools across the county. It was a fine day, like any other fair?weather autumn day in Maryland. But the race that day felt unique from the get?go. For one thing, I liked the course. It was my team's home course, one I was used to running during practices. It took runners along terrain(地形) that included open fields, hills and even dirt paths through a small forest. It was a beautiful 5?kilometer course. This particular race was our team's invite, and I was proud to be sharing the course with competitors from other schools. It also meant a lot more than normal—that my parents were there to cheer me on.
With so much to expect that day, I was ready to run! And I didn't want to be stuck with other runners, as is typical at the beginning of most cross?country races. So when the gun sounded, I took off running, leaving everyone else in the dust.
The first part of our course followed a large open field before disappearing into the forest. Within seconds of the start, I was far ahead of everyone, and all of the fans could see it. It felt magnificent!
But that feeling didn't last long. Little did I know my coach was laughing to himself, thinking, “Gabe__is__done__for!” And I was. My body was telling me to slow down. My pride, however, said “No! Not until you're out of sight of the audiences!” I was in pain, but I kept up my pace until I reached the forest. Once I was among the trees, I slowed way down.
I enjoyed most races, even while pushing myself, but this one was not enjoyable in the least. I finished the race, but in nowhere near the time I could have if I'd paced myself well from the beginning. Every time I reflect on that cross?country season, I'm reminded of something: Pride is no substitute for pace.
4. What made the race unique to the author according to Paragraph 1?
A. The blue sky and white clouds.
B. The home course and his parents.
C. The competitors and audiences.
D. The unknown terrain and fair weather.
5. What does the underlined sentence “Gabe is done for!” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The author loses something.
B. The author needs more patience.
C. The author is doing a great job.
D. The author is going to fail the race.
6. Why didn't the author enjoy the race?
A. Because he slowed way down.
B. Because he didn't finish the race.
C. Because he could have done better.
D. Because he lost the game completely.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Meaning of Pride
B. The Race Less Paced
C. A Race Worth Celebrating
D. A Competition of My Team
C
For many people, the ring of a cellphone isn't a welcome sign that someone is thinking about them. Instead, it's a moment of fear that signals the beginning of an uncomfortable, and potentially full?of?anxiety exchange. Not surprisingly, psychologists regard some of this newfound social anxiety as a result of the rise in text communication.
Despite our phones being available all the time, we tap out(敲打出) most of our correspondence(通信). It makes sense: Why worry about seeking the right word, or stuck in an awkward conversation when you could craft, edit, and rewrite the perfect message?
“Anxiety over the possibility of talking on the phone has increased as our culture has moved away from verbal(口头的) communications and in the direction of texting, emailing, social media comments, and other written communications,” says Ellen Hendriksen, a clinical psychologist at Boston University. “Typing as opposed to talking is really different because when you text or email or post a comment, you have time to think and edit. That's different from face?to?face conversation where it happens in real time and, if you make a mistake, it's out there.”
Hendriksen says that uncertainty is at the root of all anxieties, and phone calls are full of uncertainty. In person, you know the context of what someone is doing before you start a conversation. When you stop by a coworker's desk to ask them a question, you can quickly see whether they're busy. When you call someone, you have no idea what they're doing. With texts or email, you typically don't expect an immediate response, so the person can reply at their own pace. In comparison, __cold__calling__someone seems as rude as showing up at their house unannounced.
Hendriksen says you may start to associate the phone with feeling incompetent or embarrassed, so you avoid making calls to prevent feeling that way again. The problem is, the more you avoid talking on the phone, the worse your anxiety around it gets. So how can you get it?
8. Why has our culture moved away from verbal to written communications?
A. Because people feel annoyed when a cellphone rings.
B. Because typing gives people time to think and avoid mistakes.
C. Because face?to?face conversation is usually a mistake.
D. Because making phone calls is not as convenient as texting.
9. What do the underlined words “cold calling someone” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. To call someone with a bad attitude.
B. To call someone when they are feeling unwelcome.
C. To call someone who has a cold attitude.
D. To call someone when they are not prepared.
10. What is the text probably going to talk about in the next paragraph?
A. The way to overcome the anxiety.
B. The way to avoid making calls.
C. The way to reduce uncertainty of calls.
D. The way to make good phone calls.
11. Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?
A. The rise in text communication causes new social anxiety.
B. The ring of a cellphone isn't always a welcome sign.
C. Some people are anxious about talking on the phone.
D. Uncertainty is considered to be at the root of all anxiety.
D
We sometimes think global warming or climate change is a problem very far away from our lives, and that only the government needs to worry about it. But it's hardly possible to completely stay out of it—scientists are now 95 percent sure that humans have been the “dominant cause” of global warming trends since the 1950s.
One of the conclusions of a report released on Sept. 27 by the United Nations says that human activities have caused global temperatures to rise by 0.89℃ between 1901 and 2012. That might not seem like a lot, but the truth is that a major part of that heat has been absorbed into the oceans, which is not surprising given that they cover two thirds of Earth's surface. Also, water has a much greater capacity(容量) to absorb heat than the air does, according to The Economist.
While many greenhouse gases occur naturally and are needed to keep the Earth warm enough to support life, humans' use of fossil fuels is the main source of excess(多余的) greenhouse gases. According to CNN, by driving cars, using electricity produced by burning coal and oil or heating our homes with coal or natural gas, we release a large amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Your body can barely feel a difference of 0.89℃, but the Earth's ecosystems are so sensitive that even small changes can disturb them. It often starts with the smallest creatures at the bottom of the food chain, eventually affecting bigger animals, many of which could end up becoming extinct.
Global warming is also linked to an increase in extreme weather. A larger amount of carbon dioxide traps more energy inside the atmosphere. This changes the patterns of storms and rainfall in many regions and can lead to droughts and floods. Worse still, melting sea ice in warmer oceans is causing sea levels to rise at a speed of more than three millimeters per year, according to The Guardian, which also increases the risk of flooding.
“The report should serve as another wake?up call that our activities today have a profound impact on society, not only for us, but for many generations to come,” French Michel Jarraud, secretary?general of the World Meteorological Organization, said at a news conference.
12. The underlined word “dominant” in the first paragraph means “________”.
A. common B. indirect C. secondary D. leading
13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Greenhouse gases have been proven to harm merely the Earth.
B. There is little we can do to prevent global warming.
C. Global warming can increase the chances of droughts and floods.
D. The hugeness of oceans makes them better absorbers of heat than the air.
14. The rise in global temperatures between 1901 and 2012 ________.
A. is more harmful to smaller creatures than bigger ones
B. is not serious because most of the extra heat has been absorbed by the oceans
C. has made the Earth's ecosystems more sensitive to changes
D. is likely to cause many species to become extinct
15. What is Michel Jarraud's attitude toward the report released by the UN?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
