A hobby can be almost anything that a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists raise pets, watch birds, paint pictures, play the piano and grow flowers. They also go to concerts, climb mountains, go fishing, skate and swim. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from boxes to stamps.
People follow hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes they even make money by following a hobby. Hobbies help people relax after hard work, and provide a balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who are retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, can follow an interesting hobby.
Hobbies can also help a patient to keep healthy. Doctors have found that hobbies are useful in helping patients (病人) recover from illness. Hobbies give patients who can’t move around something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat (治疗) patients by having them take up interesting hobbies. Anyone, old or young, sick or well, rich or poor, can follow a good hobby, in spite of his age, health or money.
In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had spare time did enjoy hobbies. People today have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines have now reduced much time that people must spend on their jobs. More people retire at an earlier age than before. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their newly-found free time hours.
Sir William Osler, a famous Canadian doctor expressed the value of hobbies by saying, “No man is really happy or safe without a hobby. ”

My hobby
I am crazy about reading. In my spare time, books are always with me. I have many kinds of books, some are about history, some are about science, others are about stories.
The reason why I like reading is that books can make me relaxed. On the one hand, reading opens up my eyes to the outside world and increases my knowledge of the world. On the other hand, when I read books, it seems that writers wrote books for me in person.
I spend lots of time reading and writing that have become part of my life. I learn many writing skills that help me become a great young writer in our school. Some of my articles are put up on our school website. My classmates and teachers are proud of me.
My hobby brings me pleasure and success. It also makes me grow as a person. So hold onto your hobby, it will probably make your dreams come true.

Albert Einstein is one of the most famous geniuses in the
20th century. But unlike other geniuses, Einstein wasn't very
talented as a kid. Born in Germany in 1879, he started to
learn languages very late, and he was a common student at
school. He was interested in maths and science, but he liked
to study at home better.
Einstein used to be an office worker. However, Einstein still thought out many famous ideas in his free time, especially when he played the violin to relax himself.
Since 1908, he had worked as a university teacher for many years, first in Europe and then in the US. He was the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. He was famous for his ideas about relativity, but only a few scientists could understand it. His biggest dream was to explain the whole basic ideas in physics, but he died before it came true.
As a famous scientist, Einstein got letters from people around the world. Some of the letters were from children and he always gave them many entertaining answers. Many children thought that it was interesting to read his letters. When he received one letter from a girl with maths problems at school ,he answered, “Do not worry about your difficulties in maths. I can tell you that mine is bad all the time.”
Einstein died in a hospital in 1955. He was named "Person of the Century” in 1999 by Time magazine.

Recently I did a survey about personal interests in our English class. Here are the results.
There are four students in my group. Emma is crazy about watching movies which brings her lots of fun. And Tony takes an interest in listening to music and he prefers traditional western music that is smooth and sounds comfortable. When he is too tired to study, he just sits on the sofa, enjoying the music to relax himself. As for Bob, he has a strong interest in traveling. He often goes somewhere fantastic. In his opinion, traveling can not only open up his eyes to the outside world but also brings him lots of pleasure. My hobby is very different from theirs. Doing sports is my favourite. Sports make me healthy and full of energy.
In my view, interests and hobbies can not only bring us pleasure but also make us grow as a person.
Interest is the best teacher.
So hold onto your hobby,
it will probably make your dreams come true.
Thank you !
