My
mom
only
had
one
eye.
She
cooked
for
students
and
teachers
to
support
the
family.
One
day
during
my
elementary
school,
my
mom
came
to
say
hello
to
me.
I
was
so
embarrassed.
How
could
she
do
this
to
me?
I
threw
her
a
hateful
look
and
ran
out.
The
next
day
at
school
one
of
my
classmates
said,
“EEEE,
your
mom
only
has
one
eye!”
I
wanted
to
bury
myself.
I
also
wanted
my
mom
to
just
disappear.
I
stood
right
before
her
that
day
and
said.
“If
you're
only
going
to
make
me
a
laughing
stock.
Why
don’t
you
just
die?”
My
mom
did
not
say
a
word.
I
didn’t
even
stop
to
think
for
a
second
about
what
I
had
said,
because
I
was
full
of
anger.
I
wanted
to
move
out
of
that
house,
and
have
nothing
to
do
with
her.
So
I
studied
hard,
got
a
chance
to
go
abroad
to
study.
Then,
I
got
married.
I
bought
a
house
of
my
own.
I
had
kids
of
my
own.
I
was
happy
with
my
life.
The
one
day,
my
Mother
came
to
visit
me.
She
hadn’t
seen
me
years
and
she
didn’t
even
meet
her
grandchildren.
When
she
stood
by
the
door,
my
children
laughed
at
her,
and
I
shouted
at
her
for
coming
over
uninvited.
I
shouted
at
her,
“Why
do
you
come
to
my
house
and
scare
my
children!
GET
OUT
OF
HERE!
NOW!
And
to
this,
my
mother
quietly
answered,
“Oh,
I’m
so
sorry.
I
may
have
gotten
the
wrong
address.

Then
she
disappeared
out
of
sight.
One
day,
a
letter
about
a
school
reunion(聚会)
came
to
my
house.
So
I
lied
to
my
wife
that
I
was
going
on
a
business
trip.
After
the
reunion,
I
went
to
the
old
house
just
out
of
curiosity(好奇心).
My
neighbors
said
that
she
had
died.
I
did
not
have
a
single
tear.
They
handed
me
a
letter
that
she
wanted
me
to
have
“My
dearest
son,
I
think
of
you
all
the
time.
I’m
sorry
that
I
came
to
your
house
and
scared
your
children.
I
was
so
glad
when
I
heard
you
were
coming
for
the
reunion.
But
I
may
not
be
able
to
even
get
out
of
bed
to
see
you.
I’m
sorry
that
I
was
always
embarrassment
to
you
when
you
were
growing
up.
But,
you
see,
when
you
were
very
little,
you
got
into
an
accident
and
lost
your
eye.
As
a
mother,
I
couldn’t
stand
watching
you
having
to
grow
up
with
one
eye.
So
I
gave
you
mine.
I
was
so
proud
of
my
son
who
was
seeing
a
whole
new
world
for
me,
in
my
place,
with
that
eye.
With
all
my
love
to
you.
Your
mother.

These
days
there
are
a
lot
of
possibilities
to
be
always
connected
to
family
and
friends.
Now
that?I
have
just
moved
to
France,
this
can
be
very
convenient.
I
can
ring
my
sister
who
lives
in
Los
Angeles
on
Viber,
or
I
can
Skype
my
parents
or
friends
back
in
England
for
a
chat.
However,
sometimes
the
convenience
and
dependability
of
technology
can
be
intrusive.
Even
the
most
out-going
people?need
some
“down
time”
to
calm
down
on
their
own
and
get
relaxed.
This
is
something
that
I
consider
necessary
and
healthy.
After
all,
you
have
to
live
with
yourself
for
the
rest
of
your
life,
so
you’d
better
know
how
to
enjoy
your
own
company.
It
can
be
a
good
thing
to
have
time
to
yourself
to
collect
your
thoughts
and
free
your
feelings.
Today
I
went
for
a
walk
by
myself
around
the
lake
and
just
day-dreamed.
It
was
so
relaxing
and
helped
me
let
go
of
my
bad
emotions.
However,
somehow
it
seems
rude
or
perhaps
makes
people
feel
that
you’re
upset
to
say
to
people:
“I’m
going
to
go
and
spend
some
time
by
myself.

And
often
when
we
are
spending
time
‘alone’,
we
are
actually
connected
with
a
piece
of
electrical
equipment.
We
try
to
make
something
into
a
Facebook
or
a
Tweet
to
attract
our
friends,
or
we
scroll
through
Facebook
nosing
into
other
people’s
lives
or
seeing
what
friends
are
up
to.
We
judge
ourselves
and?other
people
by
the
photos
they
put
online,
so
we
can
tell
how
much
fun
they
are
having
compared
to
us.
This
is
an
age
when
we
can
get
so
much
surface
information
about
other
people’s
lives,
but
being
wrapped
up
in
what
other
people
are
doing
or
always
thinking
about
other
people’s
recognition
of
us
can
be
quite
unhealthy.
Perhaps
these
days
forget
about
the
simple
pleasure
of
spending
time
just
for
us.
Having
said
all
that,
I
also
think
that
spending
too
much
time
by
yourself
can
separate
you
from
others.
I
suppose
it
is
important
to
find
a
good
balance
between
spending
valuable
time
by
yourself
and
with
other
people.

For
my

I

This

Re:
First
trip

It’s
a
good
idea
to
bring
a
small
gift
or
something
from
your
country.
Don’t
be
surprised
if
your
boss
opens
the
gift
right
away.
In
the
USA,
people
often
open
a
gift
when
they
receive
it.
In
Korea,
that
is
not
polite,
but
it’s
common
in
the
USA.

In
Korea

Japan,
it’s
the
custom
to

In

Re:

Many
Americans
are
very
informal
at
home.
One
time
I
went
to
an
American
business
partner’s
home
for
dinner,
I
was
surprised
that
everyone
stood
and
talked
in
the
kitchen
while
the
husband
and
wife
were
cooking
dinner.
Besides,
unlike
in
Korea,
everyone
took
part
in
the
dinner
table
conversation,
even
the
man’s
wife
and
children.

Re:

I
agree
with
Lee.
You
probably
won’t
speak
about
business
during
dinner,
so
my
advice
is
to
know
some
topics
of
conversation.
For
example,
you
can
talk
about
travel,
food,
music,
or
sports.
But
you’d
better
not
question
about
age.

Banking
Right
now,
where
do
you
keep
your
money?
Wherever
it
is
now,
learning
where
to
keep
your
money
is
a
good
way
to
start
managing
it.
Putting
some
of
your
money
in
the
bank
can
be
a
really
great
idea,
a
bank
keeps
your
money
in
a
safe
place,
and
it
makes
it
very
easy
for
you
to
keep
track
of
how
much
you
have.
If
you
don’t
have
a
bank
account
yet,
check
out
the
information
below
to
learn
more
about
choosing
a
bank
that’s
right
for
you.
Talk
to
your
parents.
Most
likely,
your
parents
already
have
a
bank
account.
Ask
them
if
their
bank
would
be
a
good
place
to
open
an
account
for
you.
See
if
your
parents
can
talk
to
the
bank
to
learn
about
savings
accounts
for
kids
your
age.
Do
some
research
with
your
parents.
At
your
age,
when
you
put
money
in
the
bank,
it
will
most
likely
be
in
a
savings
account.
A
savings
account
allows
you
to
learn
interest
on
your
money.
By
doing
some
research,
your
parents
can
help
you
decide
which
bank
will
help
you
make
the
most
money.
Think
about
location
and
hours.
If
you
want
to
be
able
to
easily
put
in
money
and
take
it
out,
you’ll
want
to
choose
a
bank
that
is
open
during
times
that
work
for
you
and
your
parents
and
isn’t
too
far
away
from
your
home.
Talk
to
your
parents
about
banking.
Your
parents
have
a
lot
of
experience
with
banking
that
you
don't
have
yet.
Choosing
a
bank
is
a
great
start
to
understanding
and
managing
your
money,
but
there
is
a
lot
more
to
it.
Talk
to
them
about
ways
you
can
make
more
money
to
put
in
the
bank,
good
ideas
for
when
to
visit
the
bank,
and
how
you
can
keep
track
of
what’s
in
your
account
and
what
you
spend.
You
should
start
thinking
about
how
to
save
some
money
for
the
future!
Find
out
a
plan.
Think
about
how
much
money
you
earn
through
special
occasions,
or
for
the
work
you
do
around
the
house,
and
make
a
plan.
Instead
of
spending
all
of
the
money
as
you
get
it,
save
some
part
of
it
each
time.
Set
a
goal.
Is
there
something
big
you’ve
been
trying
to
have
but
you
never
seem
to
have
enough
money?
Is
there
something
you
know
you'll
want
in
a
few
years?
If
so,
set
money
you
need
to
save
to
reach
your
goal.

The
forest
was
full
of
shadows
as
a
little
girl
hurried
through
it
one
summer
evening
in
June.
It
was
already
8
o’clock
and
Sylvie
wondered
if
her
grandmother
would
be
angry
with
her
for
being
so
late.
Every
evening
Sylvie
left
her
grandmother’s
house
at
5:30
to
bring
their
cow
home.
The
old
animal
spent
her
days
out
in
the
open
country
eating
sweet
grass.
It
was
Sylvie’s
job
to
bring
her
home
to
be
milked.
When
the
cow
herd
Sylvie’s
voice
calling
her,
she
would
hide
among
the
bushes.
This
evening
it
had
taken
Sylvie
longer
than
usual
to
find
her
cow.
The
child
hurried
the
cow
through
the
dark
forest,
following
a
narrow
path
that
led
to
her
grandmother’s
home.
The
cow
stopped
at
a
small
stream
to
drink.
As
Sylvie
waited,
she
put
her
bare(赤裸的)
feet
in
the
cold,
fresh
water
of
the
stream.
She
had
never
before
been
alone
in
the
forest
as
late
as
this.
The
air
was
soft
and
sweet.
Sylvie
felt
as
if
she
were
part
of
the
gray
shadows
and
the
silver
leaves
that
moved
in
the
evening
breeze(微风).
She
began
thinking
how
it
was
only
a
year
ago
that
she
came
to
her
grandmother’s
farm.
Before
that,
she
had
lived
with
her
mother
and
father
in
a
dirty,
crowded
factory
town.
One
day,
Sylvie’s
grandmother
had
visited
them
and
had
chosen
Sylvie
from
all
her
brothers
and
sisters
to
be
the
one
to
help
her
on
her
farm
in
Vermont.
The
cow
finished
drinking,
and
as
the
9-year-old
child
hurried
through
the
forest
to
the
home
she
loved,
she
thought
again
about
the
noisy
town
where
her
parents
still
lived.
Suddenly
the
air
was
cut
by
a
sharp
whistle(口哨声)
not
far
away.
Sylvie
knew
it
wasn’t
a
friendly
bird’s
whistle.
It
was
the
exact
whistle
of
a
person.
She
forgot
the
cow
and
hid
in
some
bushes.
But
she
was
too
late.
“Hello,
little
girl,”
a
young
man
called
out
cheerfully.
“How
far
is
it
to
the
main
road?”
Sylvie
answered
in
a
low
and
shaking
voice,
“two
miles.”
She
came
out
of
the
bushes
and
looked
up
into
the
face
of
a
tall
young
man
carrying
a
gun.
The
stranger
began
walking
with

Are
You
Right
Handed
or
Left
Handed?
Which
had
do
you
use
when
write?
About
8
to
15
percent
of
people
are
left
handed.
They
often
have
to
use
tools
that
are
designed
for
right-handed
people.
So
it
is
difficult
for
left-handers
to
use
most
tools.
If
you
are
right
handed,
try
this
experiment:
Take
a
knife
with
your
left
hand
and
try
cutting
a
potato
into
pieces.
Don’t
be
surprised
if
you
feel
awkward.
In
the
past,
people
thought
it
was
strange
to
use
the
left
hand.
Young
students
looked
down
upon
their
left-handed
classmates.
Some
children
were
even
punished
for
using
their
left
hand
to
write.
But
these
days
parents
and
teachers
have
accepted
that.
In
almost
every
school
in
the
world,
left-handed
students
can
use
their
left
hand
to
write.
What
causes
people
to
be
left
handed
or
right
handed?
Experts
have
searched
long
and
hard
on
this.
They
conclude(得出结论)
that
left-handed
people
are
left
handed
for
the
same
reason
that
right-handed
people
are
right
handed.
One
out
of
every
ten
people
just
is
a
left-hander.
It’s
simply
like
the
color
of
our
eyes
-
some
people
have
brown
eyes,
while
some
others
have
black
eyes.
However,
many
researchers
think
that
left-handers
and
right-handers
are
different
in
some
ways.
Right-handers
are
more
talkative
and
outgoing
than
left-handers.
Many
right-handed
people
understand
spoken
words
better.
For
example,
after
they
listen
to
directions
to
a
supermarket,
they
can
find
it
easily.
Right-handers
are
good
at
organizing
people,
too.
They
are
also
better
basketball
guards.
Just
ask
Yao
Ming.
Research
shows
that
left-handers
are
creative
and
artistic.
Many
famous
performers,
like
Jim
Carrey
and
Paul
McCartney,
are
left-handed.
Many
left-handers
learn
better
visually(在视觉方面).
In
art,
both
Leonardo
da
Vinci
and
Michelangelo
were
left
handed.
In
music,
Ludwig
van
Beethoven
was
left-handed.
In
science,
you
find
Newton
and
Einstein.
The
left-handed
people
are
also
really
good
at
tennis
and
other
single
sports.
If
you
prefer
one
hand,
but
you
are
still
good
at
writing
with
the
other,
you
are
mixed.
Research
shows
mix-handers
can
remember
everyday
things
better
than
other
people.
What
did
you
eat
for
lunch
two
weeks
ago?
If
you’re
mix-handed,
you
can
probably
remember.

The
sounds
you
make
while
chewing
have
a
great
effect
on
the
amount
of
food
you
eat,
a
new
study
has
found.
The
results
suggest
that
people
are
likely
to
eat
or
drink
less
if
they
can
hear
themselves
eating.
Researchers
at
Brigham
Young
University
(BYU)
and
Colorado
State
University
(CSU)
have
found
that
your
TV,
radio,
and
computer
are
making
you
fat.
Not
by
showing
you
attractive
ads
but
hiding
the
sounds
of
your
chewing.
Gina
Mohr,
an
assistant
professor
of
marketing
at
CSU,
says
that
the
sound
is
“an
important
sense
in
the
eating
experience,”
but
that
consumers
and
researchers
have
largely
overlooked
its
effect.
The
team
carried
out
three
separate
experiments
to
look
at
the
effects
of
food
sound.
In
one
experiment,
participants
were
given
snacks
to
eat
while
they
wore
headphones
playing
either
loud
or
quiet
noises.
Results
showed
that
louder
noise
masked
the
sound
of
chewing,
causing
participants
to
eat
more.
Those
in
the
group
with
the
loudest
sounds
ate
four
biscuits,
while
the
“quiet”
group
ate
2.
75
biscuits.
In
another
of
their
experiments
they
found
that
just
having
people
hear
chewing
sounds
through
an
advertisement
can
reduce
the
amount
they
eat.
And
one
experiment
showed
that
even
asking
people
to
think
of
the
sounds
of
eating
can
also
help
reduce
consumption.
The
authors
call
this
the
“Crunch
Effect.”
“When
you
mask
the
sound
of
consumption,
like
when
you
watch
TV
while
eating,
you
take
away
one
of
those
senses
and
it
may
cause
you
to
eat
more
than
you
would
normally,”
said
Ryan
Elder,
assistant
professor
of
marketing
at
BYU’s
Marriott
School
of
Management.
“The
effects
may
not
seem
huge
but
over
the
course
of
a
week,
month,
or
year,
it
could
really
add
up.”
The
author
strongly
advise
people
to
be
mindful
not
only
of
how
food
tastes
and
looks,
but
also
of
how
it
sounds.
So
the
next
time
you
sit
down
for
a
meal,
take
your
headphones
off
and
mute
the
TV.
Or
find
a
movie
where
there’s
a
lot
of
very
loud
chewing.
4.

the

A.

B.
