Bicycles are very popular around the world nowadays. People ride their bicycles for exercise and enjoyment. In some places, people use bicycles to get to work. In other places, bicycle riding is a very popular exercise to people who live in cities. But who invented the first bicycle?
In 1791, a Frenchman named Comte de Sivrac invented and owned the first bicycle. Mrs. Sivrac rode the bicycle in Paris. The handles and the seat were wooden. This bicycle was very difficult to move. A rider even had to pick up the front wheel to change direction. What's worse, the bicycle had no brakes for stopping or pedals for the feet! Riding a bicycle took great risk.
In 1817, a German named Baron von Drais de Sauerbrun made the first bicycle better. The seat became more comfortable. The wheel could now change direction. His ride in the forest took only one hour instead of three hours on foot, which surprised people at that time.
Sauerbrun brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France. Then Denis Johnson, an Englishman, made a bicycle for women. It had space for their dresses to hang down. But these bicycles still had no brakes or pedals, and riders often got hurt. These bicycles and the people who rode them were not very popular.
It took another forty-five years for the bicycle to become popular. More than 100 years later, bicycle riding is more popular than ever. In fact, in India and China, there are still many more bicycles than cars.

Chinese researchers have developed a robot designed to help doctors treat the new coronavirus and other highly contagious (传染的)diseases.
The machine has a long robotic arm attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. For example, the device can listen to sounds made by patients'hearts and lungs.
Cameras record the robot's activities, which are controlled at a distance so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can run the machine from a nearby room, or from much farther away.
The robot's main designer is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at China's Tsinghua University in Beijing. He told Reuters news agency that he got the idea for the machine when the number of cases of the COVID-19 virus was rising quickly in the city of Wuhan.
One of Zheng's friends, head of Bering's Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that healthcare workers treating patients were getting themselves infected. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation.
So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robot. Zheng said the team was able to change two robotic arms. The new robot is almost completely automated (自动化的), Zheng said. It can even disinfect itself after performing actions involving patient contact.
"Doctors are all very brave," Zheng told Reuters. "But this virus is just too contagious…We can use robots to perform the most dangerous tasks."
However, Zheng said he had heard from some doctors that it would be better not to build such robots. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.
The team now has two robots and both have been tested by doctors at hospitals in Beijing. One machine was once taken to Wuhan's Union Hospital, where doctors there were trained to use it.
Zheng would like to build more of the robots, but money from the university has run out, each robot costs about$72,000 to make. He does not plan to commercialize the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.
28.What are Paragraph 4 and 5 mainly about?
A.When the robot was designed. B.How the robot is controlled.
C.Who the robot is intended for. D.Why the robot was invented.
29.What difficulty is Zhang Gangtie faced with?
A.Patients refusing to use the new robot.
B.Healthcare workers getting themselves infected.
C.Being short of money to produce more of the robots.
D.Having no teammates to commercialize the design.
30.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Doctors are Fighting against Coronavirus
B.Coronavirus is Under Control in China
C.Chinese Robot is Invented to Replace Doctors to Cure Diseases
D.Chinese Robot is Designed to Help Doctors Fight Coronavirus

When you think of symbols of the United States, you probably think of the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore or the Mississippi River. But the symbol that can stand, more than any other, for freedom stands in New York Harbor: the green Statue of Liberty. However, it turns out that she was not designed to be green, nor was she always that color.
The?Statue?of?Liberty?was?given?to?the?United?States?in?1885?as?a?gift?from?the?people of France. She was built over several years out of copper(铜)(over 30 tons of it!). So how did she become green?
It has nothing to do with paint. As the name of the material would suggest, the statue was a bright copper color at the very beginning. How-ever, once she was set in New York Harbor, a chemical reaction called oxidation began. The copper on the surface began to react with the oxygen in the air. That reaction created tenorite, a dark brown-black material. So her copper color got darker before it got lighter.
After the chemical makeover, sulfuric acid in the air (much of which comes from New York air pollution) reacted with the copper, turning the outside of the Statue of Liberty green. By 1906, the color of copper was gone and the statue was the color we know today. However, in the early 1900s, the U.S. government collected money for repairs, suggesting that the statue be painted to what it had looked like - but people remonstrated, and the 搑epairs never happened.
But with all of these reactions, will the Statue of Liberty be changing color again any time soon? Will we see a purple Statue of Liberty? Luckily, no. Green will continue to stand for liberty for generations to come.
31.Why does the author mention the symbols of the U.S. in Paragraph 1?
A.To lead to the topic of the text. B.To introduce the culture of the U.S.
C.To tell readers what the text is about. D.To show the role of the Statue of liberty
32.Why does the color of the Statue of Liberty change?
A.Because the color is not suitable for New York.
B.Because the statue was made by the French a long time ago.
C.Because the statue has gone through several chemical reactions.
D.Because the weather conditions in the U.S. are terrible.
33.The underlined word “remonstrated” in the text can be replaced by________.
A.protested B.noticed C.judged D.waited
34.What can we learn from the text?
A.The Statue of Liberty should be protected.
B.Air pollution has some influence on the relics.
C.Copper isn’t a perfect material to make statues.
D.The Statue of Liberty is famous only in the U.S.
35.What do we know about the Statue of Liberty?
A.It was a gift given by people from France in the 1880s.
B.The color of the Statue was bright at first.
C.People in the United States don’t like the green statue.
D.The government turned a blind eye to the color change of the statue.
