I took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent.
One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly(戒备地). The rest of us were silent.
The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply.
The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. His thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: 揌ave you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie? We never got to know if his name really was 揅harlie, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.
Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place.
Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn抰 waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn抰 there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or梙opefully on holiday somewhere.
When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door.
The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.
The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping (弯腰) a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today抯 children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
8. Parents in China, according to this passage, ____________.
A. are too strict with their children
B. are too rich to educate their children
C. have some problems in educating their children correctly
D. are too poor to educate their children

A. that their children need to take extra-course activities
B. that the more expensive an education is, the better it is
C. that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence
D. that their children first need to be a good cook if they want to get good marks in the exams
10. The writer of this passage does not seem to be satisfied with_______.
A. the parents ideas of educating their children
B. the education system
C. children抯 skills
D. children抯 hobbies
11. Doing some cooking at home helps children_________.
A. learn how to serve their parents
B. learn how to become strong and fat
C. benefit from it and prepare themselves for the future
D. make their parents believe that they are clever
12. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that______.
A. broken radios and television sets are useful
B. one's curiosity may be useful for his later life
C. an engineer must fix many broken radios
D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios

Ant farm lessons
I learned about life from an ant(蚂蚁)farm. When I was 7 years old, my family created one for me. First, we put clean sand (沙子)in a thin glass box, and then we waited for the live ants to arrive. Shortly after the ants were dropped into the glass structure(结构),they got to work making tunnels (隧道). I was surprised that each one knew just what to do. After hours of staring, I realized that the ants had assigned jobs. With my mom’s help, I kept a diary of what happened each day and named the ants.
One day a tragedy(悲剧) struck the ant farm. The pages of my diary, still wrinkled(起皱) where tear drops fell, indicate the depth of the tragedy. I had put my face so close to the structure that I accidentally tipped(翻倒)it over, caving(坍塌)in all the tunnels. Although the ants survived their earthquake, one by one they began to die.
I was terrified as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.My mother said that the ants were dying of “frustration”. They simply could not stand the reality that their tunnels had been destroyed (毁坏).
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more. 0ver the years, I came to realize how much the ants benefited from their teamwork. Working together, they were able to create an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work. Day in and day out, each labored(劳动)at their task, The ant farm showed that teamwork and perseverance (坚持不懈)are two key ingredients to success.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity(不幸)is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, humans cannot give up when they face disappointment. Unlike the ants, we have to realize that if a tunnel caves in, we just have to build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a choice.
13.What can we conclude from the first paragraph?
The author and her mother guided the ants about where to make tunnels.
It took the ants several days to realize that they should make tunnels.
The author抯 family created an ant farm for her and put some ants inside.
The author was very interested in the ants and spent lots of time watching them.
14.What happened after the author tipped the ant farm over?
A. All the tunnels were destroyed
B. Some ants were crushed to death
C. The ants started working again even though they were very sad
D. The ants that survived left those who had died in the sand
15.What is the biggest lesson that the author learned from the ants?
New beginnings are always hard.
Adversity is what makes people successful.
Teamwork and perseverance are key to success
When things don’t go well, we shouldn’t give up.
