1. 表示过去某个时间正在发生的动作。
He was cooking at six yesterday evening.
昨天晚上六点，他正在做饭。
2. 表示过去某段时间内正在发生的动作。
I was staying here from March to May last year.
去年三月到五月，我一直待在这里。
常见的有at nine yesterday evening, at that time, at this time yesterday，或由 when引导的时间状语从句 等表达过去具体时刻
另外还可以用from …to表达过去的时间段的介词短语 如：from 8:00 to 10:00 last night
eg:

昨天暴风雨来临时，人们在干什么？
2.I was sleeping at that time. 那时我正在睡觉。
