Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka
Apply now. The next available start date for this project is Aug 2, 2021
The Indian Ocean is a popular area for sea turtles to live and breed in, however the turtle population in popular coastal areas is struggling to stop the effects of climate change and human population. Volunteers can help with intervention(干预) efforts helping to assist injured turtles and boost conservation around the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
You’ll be based in the town of Ambalangoda, contributing on conservation projects that are certified by the Sri Lankan government. Your focus will be caring for disabled turtles, promoting conservation and recycling awareness among locals, with the most important goal of increasing the turtle population.
Your tasks can include cleaning turtles and their tanks, sourcing and preparing food, feeding the turtles, assisting with beach cleaning, maintaining hatcheries(孵化场), relocating eggs to protect them from being attacked and releasing hatchlings. Duties are often seasonal so it’s important to be flexible and open to helping wherever it’s required.
Accommodation is an easy 5-minute walk from the beach and volunteer placement in a dormitory-style volunteer house, with comfortable but basic living facilities.
This project is open to all volunteers with an interest in conserving sea life and is well suited for those who are prepared to work hard and don抰 mind getting dirty.

Gerardo Ixcoy is a 27-year-old teacher in Guatemala. He teaches in the area where having electricity is something of a luxury(奢侈品)and students have no access to mobile apps or computers, which became a problem when Guatemalan government had to choose distance education for students at home because of COVID-19.
Gerardo Ixcoy felt that he had to teach those children living far from the digital world. After all, education is a universal right and Gerardo Ixcoy thought those children shouldn't be excluded from having the education they needed. There had to be an alternative to distance education. But what was the solution?
Gerardo bought himself a secondhand tricycle(三轮车)with his savings. Once he had the tricycle, the next step was to change it into a classroom on wheels. He put a roof with a solar panel(太阳能电池板)on it, along with a screen to avoid the spread of COVID-19. He fixed a whiteboard on it so he could explain to the students the basics of primary education:math, the local language and the universal national language—Spanish.
The purpose of the solar panel is to provide constant power for a small loudspeaker so he can teach from a distance. It's a matter of respecting the healthy distance required to be safe from the virus. He, the teacher, stays outside, and the student participates from his or her house.
With that enthusiasm for education, he tries to visit his students at least twice a week, riding his classroom-cycle. The children he serves say that, although he visits them for only a few hours a week, they look forward to it. They appreciate his visit and will take advantage of it to learn.
24. What is the problem for the Guatemalan students because of COVID-19?
A. They cannot continue their study any more.
B. They are cut off from the digital world and the Internet.
C. They have no right to get the government抯 distance education.

B. He fixed a solar panel on their house roofs to give electricity.
C. He rode his tricycle to their houses and taught them face to face.
D. He transformed his tricycle into a classroom on wheel to give them lessons.
27. What can we learn from Gerardo Ixcoy's story?
A. Love for education breaks down barriers
B. Education contributes to success.
C. Great hope makes great man.
D. Hard work pays off.

Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound space. You listen to your favorite songs, play loud computer games or watch a movie all without other people hearing the sound and without headphones.
That is the possibility presented by 搒ound beaming, a new technology from Noveto Systems, an Israeli company. On Friday, the company introduced a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver.
SoundBeamer Product Manager Ayana Wallwater enjoys watching the reactions of people trying the technology for the first time. 揗ost people just say, 慦ow, I really don't believe it,挃 she said. 揧ou don抰 believe it because it sounds like a speaker, but no one else can hear it...it抯 supporting you and you're in the middle of everything. It抯 happening around you.
The device uses a 3-D sensing module that finds and follows the ear position of the listener. It sends ultrasonic waves (超声波) to create sound pockets by the user’s ears. The 3-D method creates sound on all sides of the listener, therefore the listeners feel completely transported into the scene.
By changing a setting, the sound can follow a listener around when they move their head. It also is possible to move out of the sound beam's path and hear nothing at all. 揧ou don抰 need to tell the device where you are. It抯 not streaming to one exact place.
Noveto expects the device will have many uses. Office workers could listen to music or conference calls without others hearing. People could play a game, a movie or music without waking up others in the same room. Because the device does not use headphones, it is possible to hear other sounds in the room clearly.
While the idea of sound beaming is not new, Noveto was the first to launch the technology.
According to the chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein, a 搒maller version of the device will be ready for release to consumers next year.
28. What possibility may sound beaming present?
A. Office workers may share a conference call without being interrupted.
B. The listener may have the ability to pick up some special sounds.
C. Students may enjoy songs or movies without disturbing others.
D. Customers cannot hear any noise in the crowded mall.
29. What do ordinary people think of SoundBeamer 1.0?
A. Impossible. B. Amazing.
C. Strange. D. Meaningful.
30. How does SoundBeamer put sound in the listener抯 head?
A. It places the listener on the scene to hear the sound.
B. It fixes a sound beam抯 path which can not be changed.
C. It follows the listeners around to send and receive sounds.
D. With 3-D tracking technology, it sends ultrasonic waves to the target listener.
31. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To promote the SoundBeamer. B. To introduce a new sound device.
C. To recommend new headphones. D. To explain a technical phenomenon.
D
If you don抰 use it, you lose it. At least, that抯 how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something which does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. Muscles, for example, will waste away without use. In order to resist this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia(痴呆),which I’m sure you will agree, no one wants. However, all is not lost because these days it's relatively easy to train your brain. Smart phones and apps have put programmes into our hands that can test, maintain and even improve our memories, mathematical skills and a lot of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains nice and sharp, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people thought it was important to play online games, such as puzzles and mind games, which are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits was 搘eak to non-existent.
There are other ways to promote intelligence. It recommends seeking out new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There's more good news, too.James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK has said that brain decline is not inevitable (不可避免的). As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it抯 time to try that hobby you've always wanted to do. And as for me? I'm off to learn the piano.
32. Which has the closest meaning of the underlined words 搒ocially engaging?
A. Making more shopping. B. Avoid brain decline.
C. Doing exercises alone. D. Going out with friends.
33. Which of the following can better keep your brain healthy according to the author?
A. Trying something new. B. Using smart phone regularly.
C. Playing games online. D. Doing what you are good at.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The writer has learned piano to keep his brain nice and sharp.
B. Scientists said that people can do nothing to stop the brain decline.
C. Online games are not so beneficial to our brain as they are supposed to be.
D. Many elder people suffer from dementia because they don抰 use their brain often.
35. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Advantages of trying something new.
B. Disadvantages of using smart phones.
C. Ways to keep our brain as sharp as possible.
D. How to spend time meaningfully at an old age.
第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
When we come home from a long day at school, our dogs are so happy to see us. Their faces look happy, with mouths wide open. __36__
It’s probably not an illusion(错觉) at all. In fact, two centuries of modern science has good evidence that humans and animals share emotions—including the kind of emotion that results in laughter.
US animal behaviorist Patricia Simonet carried out research on a special sound that dogs make when they play. 37 . It is quite different from other dog sounds like whining(哀鸣)and growling(咆哮).Simonet believed it is laughter.
Even other dogs seem to recognize and associate the 搇augh with pleasure. 38 when Simonet played the laughter to other dogs, reported ABC News.
It might not surprise us that dogs梠ur traditional 揵est friends敆like to laugh. But other research suggests that creatures like rats, also laugh.
Estonian researcher Jaak Panksepp did experiments on rats 39 . When Panksepp tickled his rats on the neck, they made a chirping(唧唧声)sound, which the scientist believed was laughter. The rats liked the tickling so much, he reported, that they sought more of it. According to Scientific American , Panksepp’s rats would follow his finger around to make him tickle them again.
While studies have shown that dogs and rats “laugh” when they play, it doesn’t mean that all animals really laugh even if they make a laughter-like sound.
Take hyenas(土狼)for example. The hyena is well known for making a noise that sounds like a person laughing loudly. But studies show the hyenas don抰 make the noise because they think something is funny. 40 .
But make no mistake when your dog welcomes you home, it抯 definitely laughing.
A. You can make your dog laugh at times
B. Laughter can relieve their nervousness
C. The sound is a forced, breathy exhalation(呼气)”
D. He found that they had a sense of humor and fun
E. We’ve all wondered whether our dogs are smiling at us
F. Some would seek out toys and others would run toward the source
G. The “laughing” is actually a noise they make when they are excited or frightened

One sunny afternoon, Jane, a seven-year-old girl whose parents went to their farm to harvest corns, was left home with their dog, Yeller. Feeling rather bored, she decided to go out for an adventure alone. With a toy gun in her hand and a whistle around her neck, Jane crossed a large area of grassland into the woods before she realized that she was lost.
Sitting on a rock and wondering what to do, Jane began crying. After a while, she decided to walk along a wide path lined with tall trees and thick bushes. It was getting dark, but she still couldn't find her way home. Suddenly, she heard a strange noise, which was actually the sound of wind blowing leaves. She ran quickly in the woods until there was no road ahead but a river. She lost her toy gun while running. Cold and scared, Jane sat down near the river and fell asleep against a tree.
Her parents were back from work but could not find their daughter. Deeply worried about Jane's safety, they locked the door and went out to search for her.
Their dog, Yeller, was left at home. He noticed something was wrong because it was dark but there was nobody home. He sensed that Jane was in danger. He tried to get out, but the door was locked. He jumped through a window, looked in the fields but couldn't find her anywhere. However, from the ground came a familiar smell as he lowered his head. He followed the smell and walked across the grassland until he found the toy gun. But Jane was not there. The dog circled around the woods, barking loudly into the air.

Dear Troubled,
I’m sorry to know that you are addicted to computer games. In fact, many students at your age are wasting too much time on them instead of doing something meaningful.
To get rid of this bad habit, you should first find something more important that will draw your attention away from computer games. Second, spending more time with your family or friends will help you forget about computer games. Last but not least, you can make a plan and reduce the time spent in playing computer games step by step, until you give it up completely.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
Jane opened her eyes and heard Yeller barking nearby. Excitedly, she tried to yell to make herself heard but in vain because her voice was too weak. All of a sudden, it occurred to her that she brought with her a whistle. She blew it with all her strength and the whistle pierced through the night sky. Yeller heard it and rushed towards the river. They were very glad and Yeller jumped around and licked her face
Weak and hungry, Jane walked back home with Yeller leading the way. Approaching home, she found her parents waiting anxiously out of the door. They were just about to call the police when they heard Yeller’s barking. Seeing their daughter and dog coming back, they burst into tears of relief. That night, Jane had a large piece of cake while Yeller had a hero’s supper: a huge meal of steak.
