The teacher stood before his class and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know you have all worked very hard to prepare for this test,” he said. “And because I know you can do it well, I can offer a B to anyone who doesn’t want to take the test.”
Many students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. Only a few students stayed. The teacher looked at them and said, “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance.” Two more students decided to go.
Seven students remained. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have just received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher like that, but I think it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who don’t believe in themselves are just B students.
The same is true in real life. The A students believe in what they are doing and have learned from both success and failure. In the end, they become better people.

It would be very exciting to be a reporter on a newspaper. As soon as a reporter's boss gives him a story to write, the reporter is on the job.He keeps his mind on what he is going to do.He does not begin writing the story until he knows what he should find out.He must know why he should write the story.
At times a reporter must search hard to find all of the facts he needs for a story. The facts may not be right under his nose.To find the facts,he has to recognize important details. While gathering information for a story,he asks himself questions:Should I use this information? Is this an important fact?
A reporter writes the story as fast as he can,so it can go right away into the newspaper. The story also needs a headline, which tells very quickly what the news story is about and is printed bigger and blacker than the rest of the news story.
Every big newspaper has many reporters, because many stories are needed in the newspaper.Would you like to be one?

By May,after three months, I had lost 22 pounds and reached my goal of 115 pounds. My friends would say “Alice, you look great!” or “How did you lose so much weight?” Those compliments made me feel good and confident.
Soon I dropped to 110 pounds. A few of my friends told me that I needed to stop dieting(节食), because I was starting to look sick. They brought me a present a bag of chocolates, which I later gave to my sister. My mom would come to my room, with tears in her eyes, and have long chats about how harmful this diet was and begged me to stop. My dad would leave worried messages on my cell phone at school, telling me that it would do serious harm to my body.
By mid-June, when school was coming to an end, I was down to an only alive state of 95 pounds. All of a sudden, I knew 1 had to do something. I guessed the number itself scared me. I recalled my doctor. He told me about a girl who was 95 pounds and was at the risk of dying. I knew I was putting my life at risk(冒险), but for what? To make those who love me worried? Was it worthwhile to be thin?
Now I realize that models in magazines, TV and movies are not realistic. The price to pay for the “perfect body” is living with a dangerous and sometimes deadly eating disorder. And there are more important things to think about than how thin you are.
28. The underlined word “compliments” in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A. questions B. praise

30. The author decided to stop dieting .
A. after her parents persuaded her out of it
B. when her weight dropped to 95 pounds
C. after she reached her goal of losing weight
D. after her friends told her to stop dieting
31. From the text we learn that .
A. there are no models with a perfect body in real life
B. it is too expensive for people to lose weight
C. you will be healthy as long as you stop dieting
D. an unhealthy diet can lead to serious health problems

The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. What was the first Earth Day like?
Let’s hear what some people say about it?
Jeffery Hollender
I was a primary school student in 1970 and my school organized a great clean-up in Greenwich Village to celebrate the day. The city, which was particularly dirty back then, was really filled with excitement. There was a general feeling of possibility and a realization that it was our responsibility to keep our planet health.
Peter Seligmann
In 1970, I was a sophomore (二年级学生) at Rutgers University studying wild life ecology, sitting on the lawn with hundreds of other famous people and listening to speeches about the earth, her fragility(脆弱)and the need to reduce waste, prevent the greenhouse effect and protect rainforests. Unfortunately, the lawn was littered with bottles and cups when the events ended.
Renny Perdue
I remember April 22, 1970 very well. One of my best friends Glenn Prickett and I were chosen by our high school art teacher to put on an Earth Day Celebration at the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, NJ. She and I did a photo essay of pollution and trash around town that was on exhibition. I remember that it was a lovely spring day and the event was a great success. The environment was not really at the top of people’s mind back then.
Alison Taylor
The theme of the first Earth Day in my town was raising awareness about the dangers of pollution to kids, animals and plants. Kids encouraged their parents to recycle things like newspapers, and this was before our town and cities had ever thought of requiring recycling. The theme worked for me; if I saw someone throw a piece of trash from a car window, I thought I was supposed to say something to him.
32. The speeches Peter Seligmann heard most probably focused on _______.
A. the harm of the greenhouse effect
B. the importance of protecting the earth
C. the bad effect of littering bottles and cups
D. the necessity of studying wildlife ecology
33. What can we infer(推断) from what Renny Perdue wrote?
A. People didn’t really care about the environment at that time.
B. People in Montclair knew nothing about the Earth Day.
C. The event was a great success mainly because of his efforts.
D. His classmates joined the Earth Day celebration mainly for fun.
34. Who was most probably the youngest when the first Earth Day appeared?
A. Renny Perdu B. Glenn Prickett
C. Peter Seligmann D. Jeffery Hollender
35. After the first Earth Day in his town, Alison Taylor ______.
A. pay little attention to recycling
B. decided to prevent animals from dying out.
C. was encouraged to care about the environment
D. was chosen to collect newspapers around the town.

作文范文
Dear Dad(Mum),
You’re so busy every day that you don’t pay much attention to your health. I’m worried about your health all the time. I’d like to give you some suggestions. I hear walking is the best sport. Your company isn’t far from home, is it? Why not walk to the office? You’d better take exercise at least once a week, such as playing tennis in the gym. Going to swim is also a nice choice, too. What’s more, it’s necessary to have healthy food. Try not to stay up too late. Having enough sleep can help your brain work better.
Dad, please accept my advice. I really wish you healthy!
Your loving son (daughter)
Tom (Mary)
