By May，after three months, I had lost 22 pounds and reached my goal of 115 pounds. My friends would say “Alice, you look great!” or “How did you lose so much weight?” Those compliments made me feel good and confident.
Soon I dropped to 110 pounds. A few of my friends told me that I needed to stop dieting(节食), because I was starting to look sick. I was a primary school student in 1970 and my school organized a great clean-up in Greenwich Village to celebrate the day. The city, which was particularly dirty back then, was really filled with excitement. There was a general feeling of possibility and a realization that it was our responsibility to keep our planet health.

In 1970, I was a sophomore (二年级学生) at Rutgers University studying wild life ecology, sitting on the lawn with hundreds of other famous people and listening to speeches about the earth, her fragility（脆弱）and the need to reduce waste, prevent the greenhouse effect and protect rainforests.
