British
people
work
some
of
the
longest
hours
in
Europe,
but
are
among
the
least
productive.
Now
some
companies
are
shortening
the
working
week
to
increase
efficiency,
health
and
happiness.
Rich
Leigh
has
introduced
a
four-day
week
at
his
PR
company.
In
fact,
his
entire
company
has
Friday
off,
because
his
firm
has
adopted
a
four-day
week.
It
is
one
of
a
handful
of
UK
businesses
that
now
operate
like
this:
staff
still
get
paid
their
previous
five-day
salary,
but
they
work
a
day
less.
The
company
found
that
they
achieved
just
as
much—and
there
were
even
signs
of
growth.“The
key
to
the
scheme’s
success,”
Leigh
says,
“is
how
happy
our
employees
now
are.
”
The
average
British
worker
takes
only
a
34-minute
lunch
break
and
works
10
hours
overtime
each
week
(more
often
than
not
this
is
unpaid).
Yet
UK
productivity
falls
seriously
behind
their
European
neighbors,
who
tend
to
work
fewer
hours.
British
working
practices
have
caused
loss
and
damage
to
the
nation’s
health
and
happiness.
More
than
half
a
million
workers
in
the
UK
were
signed
off
with
work-related
stress
or
anxiety
last
year.
Moreover,
the
work
landscape
itself
is
changing.
Automation
and
AI
will
have
a
significant
impact
on
the
labor
market,
where
unsteady
work
becomes
more
common.
Britain
is
the
only
EU
member
that
allows
workers
to
ignore
the
EU
working
time
limit
and
work
longer
hours.
For
campaigners,
now
is
the
time
for
a
change.
O’Grady,
an
advocate,
argues
that
where
businesses
have
increased
their
profits
as
a
result
of
automation,
success
should
be
shared
with
workers
in
the
form
of
reduced
hours.
“It’s
time
to
share
the
benefits
from
new
technology,
not
allowing
those
at
the
top
to
grab
them
for
themselves.
”
she
says.
24.
What
can
we
learn
from
the
passage?
A.
PR
company
has
witnessed
a
rise
in
employees’
happiness.
B.
Most
companies
in
Britain
have
conducted
a
four-day
week.
C.
British
people
are
the
least
productive
in
the
world.
D.
British
people
work
longer
and
get
more
payment
than
other
countries.
25.
Which
is
the
proper
description
of
British
working
practices?
A.
The
working
time
of
British
workers
is
within
the
EU
limit.
B.
In
terms
of
productivity,
Britain
is
beaten
by
the
United
States.
C.
Profits
gained
from
new
technology
are
on
the
decrease.
D.
Automation
and
AI
are
likely
to
cause
an
instable
work
market.
26.
Which
can
be
inferred
from
O’Grady’
s
words
in
the
last
paragraph?
A.
It’s
time
for
employers
to
share
the
increased
profits
created
by
automation.
B.
New
technology
should
belong
to
both
businesses
and
workers.
C.
Workers
should
benefit
from
automation
in
the
form
of
less
working
hours.
D.
Businesses
can’t
make
more
profits
without
new
technology.
27.
What
is
the
author’s
purpose
of
writing
the
passage?
A.
To
introduce
some
British
firms’
switch
to
a
four-day
working
week.
B.
To
explain
the
reasons
why
British
workers
suffer
stress
and
anxiety.
C.
To
appeal
for
more
reasonable
working
conditions.
D.
To
present
the
current
productivity
problem
in
Britain.

An
airport
may
be
one
of
the
last
places
people
would
expect
to
find
random(随机的)acts
of
kindness,
but
one
frequent
flyer
is
doing
what
she
can
to
lift
spirits.
Holding
a
handful
of
homemade
happiness,
Catharine
Knight
is
hoping
to
change
the
world
with
one
kind
word
at
a
time.
“I
just
want
somebody's
day
to
be
better,”
said
Knight.
“I
really
just
want
to
make
the
world
a
better
place.”
While
traveling
for
work,
she's
handing
out
cards
to
strangers
at
the
airport.
Each
card
contains
a
message
meant
to
shine
a
bit
of
light
into
these
dark
days.
“You
have
to
wear
a
mask
so
you
can't
see
somebody
smile
or
if
they're
sad,”
said
Knight.
“So
if
you
watch
somebody's
eyes,
you
can
kind
of
determine
maybe
that
person
needs
a
little
pick-me-up.”
“People
need
to
know
that
there's
still
kindness
in
this
world,”
she
added.
But
in
the
age
of
COVID19,
you
can't
blame
Heidi
Botkin
for
being
a
little
skeptical(怀疑的),
until
the
message
sunk
in.
“I
was
super
stressed
out
when
I
got
the
three
kids
by
myself,”
said
Botkin.
“So,
yeah,
that
was
a
nice
little
pick-me-up.”
This
random
act
of
kindness
project
started
three
years
ago.
Knight
and
her
son
Parker
write
uplifting
messages
for
people
they've
never
met
and
may
never
see
again.
More
than
25,000
have
been
written
so
far,
including
one
for
pilot
Michael
Jones.
“It
helped,
you
know,
I
think
everybody's
having
their
own
personal
struggles
right
now,”
said
Jones.
At
a
time
when
we
have
to
stay
apart,
this
is
a
small
reminder
that
we're
all
still
in
this
together.
28.
What
did
Catharine
Knight
do
at
the
airport?
A.
Writing
uplifting
messages
for
friends
B.
Holding
a
handful
of
homemade
happiness.
C.
Handing
out
homemade
cards
to
strangers.
D.
Expecting
to
find
random
acts
of
kindness.
29.
Why
did
Catharine
Knight
start
this
behavior?
A.
To
tell
people
to
be
kind.
B.
To
ask
people
to
wear
mask.
C.
To
remind
people
of
important
messages.
D.
To
comfort
people
with
her
kindness.
30.What
can
we
learn
from
Knight's
behavior?
A.
A
simple
act
of
kindness
can
make
a
big
difference.
B.
One
good
turn
deserves
another.
C.
A
good
beginning
makes
a
good
ending.
D.
Where
there
is
life,
there
is

What's
the
author's
attitude
to
Knight's
behavior?
A.
Doubtful
B.
Favorable
C.

D.
Critical
D
Zika
virus.
Malaria.
West
Nile
virus.
Dengue
fever.
Have
you
ever
heard
of
these
illnesses?
If
so,
you
likely
know
what
they
all
have
in
common.
These
are
a
few
of
the
diseases
spread
by
one
of
the
greatest
pests
known
to
humankind
---the
mosquito.
Much
of
the
time,
mosquito
bites
are
just
itchy(痒的).
Nothing
ruins
a
backyard
barbecue
faster
than
a
mass
of
these
bloodsucking
insects.
However,
some
mosquitoes
carry
viruses
that
cause
deadly
illnesses.
In
fact,
some
experts
say
mosquitoes
are
a
bigger
threat
to
human
life
than
any
other
organism.
Over
the
centuries,mosquitoes
are
thought
to
have
caused
the
deaths
of
52
billion
people.
That’s
half
the
people
who
have
ever
lived
on
Earth!
Even
today,
illnesses
spread
by
mosquitoes
kill
more
people
each
year
than
war
does.
It
should
be
no
surprise
that
many
people
would
like
to
get
rid
of
mosquitoes.
What
if
we
could
wipe
out
the
entire
mosquito
population?
No
more
malaria.
No
more
Zika.
No
more
itchy
bumps
after
a
summer
day
spent
outdoors.
Doesn't
that
sound
great?
Not
so
fast.
Sure,
some
species
of
mosquitoes
harm
humans.
But
others
don't
pose
any
threat
at
all!
In
fact,
some
of
these
mosquitoes
play
important
parts
in
their
ecosystems.
Let'
s
look
at
a
few
ways.
Many
of
our
Wonder
Friends
already
know
that
bees
play
an
important
part
in
pollination(授粉).
It
turns
out,
mosquitoes
do,
too!
Most
mosquitoes
actually
drink
nectar(
花蜜)
instead
of
blood.
When
they
do
so,
they
help
pollinate
the
plants
they
feed
on.
It's
also
important
to
remember
that
even
mosquitoes
are
part
of
an
ecosystem.
Without
them,
the
food
chain
would
be
disturbed.
Adult
mosquitoes
are
a
food
source
for
bats,birds,
spiders,
and
small
mammals.
Without
them,
these
animals
would
need
to
find
something
else
to
eat.
Some
experts
even
think
mosquitoes
could
be
used
to
help
humans.
32.
What
do
Zika
virus,
Malaria,
West
Nile
virus,
and
Dengue
fever
have
in

A.
They
are
all
pests
from
the
wild
forest.
B.
They
can
not
be
cured
by
human
beings.
C.
They
can
all
be
spread
by
mosquitoes.
D.
They
are
all
caused
by
bacteria.
33.
What
does
the
underlined
phrase
in
the
fourth
paragraph
mean?
A.
Kill
something
completely.
B.
Bring
up
in
large
numbers.
C.
Control

D.
Rely
on
something
completely.

I
arrived
late
one
night,
so
I
had
dinner
in
a
restaurant.
As
I
was
41
my
meal,an
older
couple
came
in.
They
were
42
hands
and
had
lovely
smiles
on
their
faces.
I
was
43
at
the
love
they
showed
for
one
another,
44
this
was
shortly
after
my
ending
a
20-year
marriage
and
I
still
had
45
in
my
heart.
As
I
paid
my
bill,I
asked
the
waiter
what
their
bill
was.
He
told
me
and
I
gave
him
the
$40
to
pay
their
bill.
He
46
if
I
knew
them
and
I
told
him,
“No,
I
just
wanted
to
repay
them
for
the
47
that
they
were
showing
to
each
other,”
and
then
I
left.When?they?asked?who?had?done?this,?the?hostess?told?them?they?had?no?idea?who?I?was,?just?retelling?what?I?said.
The
couple
were
amazed.
The
next
day,I
48
the

After
I
had
been

the

51
and

for

They
paid
it
and
left,

"Love
brings

amazement
of

waiter.
I
smiled
and
said,
"That's
nice,"
and
continued
to
order
my
53
.
About
45
minutes
later,
I
walked
over
to
the
hostess
stand.
She
smiled
and
54
that
I
would
not
have
to
pay
for
my
meal.
The
waiter
and
she
felt
they
had
to
pay
my
bill,
she
said,due
to
the
55
that
was
brought
to
the
faces
of
the
elderly
couple
and
the
amazement
of
the
young
couple
from
the
night
before.
When
I
told
her
that
they
didn’t
have
to
do
that,
she
said
with
a
smile
"Love
brings
love."

The
Sports
Day
was
fast
coming
to
the
school.
All
the
children
were
very
excited
and
were
practicing
for
the
big
race.
Jim,
one
of
the
fast
runners
of
the
school,
was
confident
that
he
would
win
so
he
was
not
doing
anything
at
all.
“You
have
to
work
hard
to
come
first
in
the
race,
Jim.
You
are
not
practicing
at
all.”
said
Jim's
mother.
“Mom,
you
know
how
fast
I
am!
Then
why
should
I
waste
my
time
running?
Only
I
will
win;no
one
else
will
win!”
shouted
Jim.
“Jim,
you
may
be
right
but
talent
without
hard
work
is
not
good
at
all.
This
laziness
of
yours
will
cost
you
greatly,”
his
mother
warned
him.
Jim
just
laughed
and
shrugged
(耸肩)
his
shoulders.
He
was
so
confident
that
he
would
win
the
prize
as
no
one
else
in
his
class
was
as
fast
as
he
was!
Tom,
a
classmate
of
Jim,
was
also
participating
in
the
running
race.
He
was
not
a
fast
runner.
However,
he
was
very
devoted
and
practiced
till
late
night
and
had
developed
great
endurance
(耐力)
and
willpower
(意志)
to
win
the
race.
There
were
a
few
days
left
for
the
Sports
Day
but
Jim
did
not
practice
at
all.
On
the
other
hand,
Tom
practiced
day
and
night.
The
Sports
Day
was
almost
around
the
corner
but
Jim
was
confident
that
no
one
could
beat
him
and
had
not
practiced
at
all.
But
Tom
with
his
devotion
and
hard
work
had
become
a
very
fast
runner.
At
last
the
Sports
Day
arrived.
All
the
students
crowded
the
ground
to
cheer
their
favorites.
The
signal
was
given
to
the
participants
to
begin
the
race.
The
coach
blew
the
whistle
and
everyone
began
to
run
towards
the
finishing
line.
It
was
so
exciting.
Jim
and
Tom
left
all
the
racers
far
behind.
Both
