Reviews
By Steven Ashmore
When traveling, I always look for museums and sites that have evening hours. We went to the Barbican Gallery on a Thursday evening and caught their recent Lee Krasner exhibition. It was fabulous. The gallery is two levels with numerous smaller spaces, making the exhibition an interesting and enjoyable experience.
By Laura Miller
I have just watched To Kill a Mockingbird here. The play and actors were fantastic. Nice and clean ladies’ toilets with hot water. During the break, they were selling the usual ice cream and drinks. Not all staff were friendly, but most were. I would come again to watch another show or even the same one.

When he looked at me, it was clear my father wasn’t sure who I was. And as I looked back at him, I wasn’t sure who he was, either.
My father had just gone through two heart surgeries and 6 days in intensive care. He’d returned to the hospital where he’d worked for 40 years. It was the hospital where all his children had been born. The doctors said that he may have a long period of confusion after the surgeries. And because he’s eighty-six, it may be many months before he returns to normal. It’s also possible he may never be “normal” again.
I sat there in this hospital room, spoon-feeding the man I’ve seen as powerful and capable all my life. It felt like the full circle of life had come around us. It felt good to support him, yet part of me wanted to tell him to “be normal” again. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to accept the full meaning of it: that my father may never be that powerful and capable person again.
Pain and suffering have visited my family, as it will visit all families. And while we hesitate to face pain and suffering, it has great lessons to teach us. Pain and suffering are well outside of the boundaries of our everyday life. When it comes, it breaks these boundaries and turns our world upside down. We become a family with all of the others who have known pain and suffering. And we have another chance to consider what’s truly important in our lives. This crisis will pass, and we’ll all be changed by it. The healing hands of time will do their work. I’m thankful that I’ve told my father everything I’ve wanted to say to him. And I’m thankful to have my family to lean on during this difficult time. We’ll all be challenged by this to show more support, care, and love.
This is as it should be. Sometimes, it takes a crisis to remind us of why we’re all here.

4.What do we know about the writer’s father from the passage?
A.He will recover from his illness soon.
B.He has been lying in bed for 40 years.
C.He used to be a powerful and capable man.
D.He didn’t know the author after 2 head surgeries.
5.How did the author feel when thinking of the pain and suffering his family had?
A.Grateful. B.Inspired
C.Exhausted. D.Sorrowful.
6.What does the author probably agree with?
A.Life is fragile than expected.
B.Something nice weighs light.
C.Pain and suffering often go hand in hand.
D.We should treat the old in an abnormal way.
7.What does the author aim to express in this passage?
A.Pain and suffering are bound to pass.
B.Pain and suffering bring us beneficial experiences.
C.We cannot always avoid facing pain and suffering.
D.We will not eventually be defeated by pain and suffering.

C
At one point in June last year, Zeng Jiapeng was more than 10,000 yuan in debt to a smart phone app. The 23-year-old Shanghai citizen pays for almost everything with Huabei, a virtual credit card that's part of Alibaba's spreading stable of e-commerce. His spending often used to go beyond his only source of income: the 8,000-yuan monthly allowance from his parents. He tried to repay the debt in installments(分期), even borrowing from Jiebei, another Alibaba-owned credit service, but eventually his mother and father had to help him out.
Zeng's story is typical of members of China's Generation Z. These young consumers, born from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, have little income. Yet they have easy access to credit from the banks, financial-tech companies, and peer-to-peer (P2P) Lenders(网络借贷平台), plus other channels that are unregulated.
The spending habits of the young in particular are causing concern. In some cases, the younger generation is being tempted to over consume via credit. Unsecured consumer lending has expanded 20% a year in China since 2008. Official data showed that almost 70% of China's 50 million P2P borrowers were younger than 40. This is indeed worrying, as there could be consequences for the broader economy if the debt piles up. In other words, if repayments take up too much income, there will be little left for new purchases, and periods of debt-fueled consumption "can often be followed by strict market corrections."
Regulators(监管部门) last year launched a breakdown on peer-to-peer lending, which, besides being a source of easy credit, had also become a popular investment vehicle. The sector has shrunk to less than half its peak size as a result of forced shutdowns.
As for Zeng, he's trying to be a little more frugal, even though he is now trying to earn a little by himself. "I deliberately set the credit limit at a lower level," he says, "so that hopefully I can better match my income with spending."
8.What can we learn about Zeng Jiapeng from the first paragraph?
A.He spent more than his salary could cover.
B.He was financially dependent on his family.
C.He was clear of debt thanks to the credit service.
D.He was in debt because he bought a smart phone app.
9.What does the underlined word “frugal” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Loaning money. B.Working hard.
C.Avoiding waste. D.Relying on others.
10.What is the most possible consequence if consumers are heavily in debt?
A.People will avoid new purchases.
B.Investment will become preferable.
C.Loose regulations will be introduced.
D.The economy in general will be healthier.
11.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Over consumption——a Habit that Kills
B.Virtual Credit Services Catching on
C.Young Adults Struggling in E-commerce
D.China's Generation Z Hooked on Credit

D
From 1990 to 2000, fishermen seeking swordfish off the coast of California accidentally caught and killed over 100 sea turtles, and injured many more. In 2001, the federal government established the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area (PLCA), a region off the coast of California where fishing boats aren’t allowed to enter from August through November. Since then, the number of turtles killed by mistake has fallen rapidly, but a handful of animals still die from being caught in fishing nets each year. And meanwhile, the once $15 million swordfish industry has become a $2 million industry.
Scientists are hoping to find a way to both protect sea turtles and other endangered creatures and help fishermen make a living. For this, many are looking at dynamic (动态的) ocean management to help fishing boats meet fish where they are and avoid catching other fish by mistake.
The first paper to suggest that the fish that live in the open ocean should be guarded with fluid, ever-changing zones of protection, came out in 2000. Larry Crowder, a professor at Hopkins Marine Station, remembers reading it and thinking, “Cool idea, but it will never work.” In 2000, scientists didn’t have the computer power to cheaply test statistical models or deal with satellite data quickly. They didn’t have enough data dealing with fish or satellite data on ocean conditions, either.
Now scientists can download oceans of satellite data in minutes, and attach satellite archival tags (档案标签) to marine (海洋的) animals to track their movements. They first collect data by marking the creatures, collecting reports from fishing boats, or other tracking methods. Then they compare that data with weather conditions, the time of year, and any other data that can be sensed. Finally, they can forecast where fish are likely to be.
Crowder and his colleagues used the data to develop a tool called EcoCast, which shows fishermen a daily map where there are more fish they desire. According to statistical modeling, if fishers had used EcoCast during the 2012 and 2015 fishing seasons, they could have fished in at least 125,000 more square miles than were open to them, without significant risk of hurting turtles.

12.The federal government hopes the PLCA and its rules can_________.
A.prevent fishing in the PLCA
B.help collect data for future researches
C.protect the creatures in the area to some degree
D.make the public realize the importance of our environment
13.What did Larry Crowder think of dynamic ocean management at first?
A.It was unrealistic.
B.It was stupid.
C.It was possible.
D.It was interesting.
14.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.An effective way to collect data.
B.Some fruits in the related technology.
C.A scientific method to find specific species.
D.The way dynamic ocean management works.
15.What should be the advantage of using EcoCast?
A.It protects the marine environment from pollution.
B.It reduces the risk of national economical loss.
C.It prevents fishermen from getting lost while fishing.
D.It both protects ocean animals and supports fishery.

In China, poetry is an important part of the curriculum and, with recent changes announced by the Ministry of Education, the number of poems students will have to memorize and recite is being increased from fourteen to seventy-two. Now, before you gasp in horror, let’s think about the reasons why studying so many poems, especially ancient poems, is important.
First of all, poetry is an essential part of traditional Chinese culture. ____16____It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and emotions that are common to everyone but which we may be unable to express—the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger. ____17____.
____18____In a few short lines, even something commonplace can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandberg: The fog comes / on silent haunches (弓腰蹲着) / and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and mysteriously like a cat, and Sandberg captures that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.
____19____After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, especially Western poetry, was actually spoken before it was written. Take Homer’s Iliad, for example. The story was apparently told for hundreds of years in palaces and on street corners before Homer wrote it down.
The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” And poems are very concise—there is not a wasted word. ____20____
A.Few people read it for pleasure.
B.Poems can also express beauty.
C.Poetry is difficult to recite.
D.Of course, to really appreciate poetry, it has to be read aloud.
E. You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!
F. It is a pathway to understanding your history and your society.
G.A good poem can put those emotions into words and bring us self-understanding.

Few people I know seem to have much desire or time to cook. Making Chinese 36 (dish) is seen as especially troublesome. Many westerners 37 come to China cook much less than in their own countries once they realize how cheap 38 can be to eat out. I still remember 39 (visit) a friend who’d lived here for five years and I 40 (shock) when I learnt she hadn’t cooked once in all that time.
While regularly eating out seems to 41 (become) common for many young people in recent years, it’s not without a cost. The obvious one is money; eating out once or twice a week may be 42 (afford) but doing this most days adds up. There could be an even 43 (high) cost on your health. Researchers have found that there is a direct link between the increase in food eaten outside the home and the rise in 44 (weigh) problems.
If you are not going to suffer this problem, then I suggest that the next time you go to your mum’s home 45 dinner, get a few cooking tips from her. Cooking food can be fun. You might also begin to notice the effects not only on your health but in your pocket.

Alexis Vaughan, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She stared out the window at the Preston, Idaho, cornfields.
Alexis, a high school student, let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Still, she was terrified when a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them, just a few feet off the road. "Dad, there's a deer, there!" Alexis said, rolling down the window for a better look. It was a three-point buck (雄鹿) — a male deer with sharp, three-pronged antlers (角) on each side of its head.
As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the buck's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream. A few seconds later, she saw an arm fly up near the buck's head. Alexis realized the buck was attacking a woman. Sue Panter, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The buck had come out from the tall corn and began following her. Having lived in rural Idaho for years, Sue knew that most bucks got frightened by humans. But this buck edged closer, even when she threw at it with a handful of gravels (石子).
Sue went to pick up a log to use for self-defense, and the buck attacked her. It lifted her with its antlers (角) and threw her into the air. Sue could feel the horns punctured (刺穿) her leg and blood flowed down her leg. Within seconds, the buck had pushed her off the road and into the cornfield.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the buck was rolling Sue like a rag doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the 104 pound teenager jumped quickly out of the car and down the slope toward the buck. She was kicking and hitting it to get its attention. Then Michael, her father, who had followed his daughter, wrestled the buck away from the women by holding the antlers.
注意:
1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

根据划线词后文“I deliberately set the credit limit at a lower level,” he says,“so that hopefully I can better match my income with spending.”
This is indeed worrying, as there could be consequences for the broader economy if the debt piles up. In other words, if repayments take up too much income, there will be little left for new purchases, and periods of debt-fueled consumption "can often be followed by strict market corrections.这确实令人担忧,因为如果债务堆积起来,可能会对整体经济造成影响。换句话说,如果还款占用了太多的收入,就没有多少钱可以用来买新东西了,而债务驱动的消费期“通常会伴随严格的市场调整”。可知,如果消费者负债累累,人们会避免购买新的商品。故选A。
Zeng's story is typical of members of China' Generation Z. These young consumers, born from themid-1990s to the early 2000s, have little income. Yet they have easy access to credit from the banks, financial-tech companies, and peer-to-peer (P2P) Lenders(网络借贷平台), plus other channels that are unregulated.

Cool idea, but it will never work. 故选A。

Alexis helped Sue up the slope. She immediately seated her into their car, and then applied a clean towel from her bag to Sue's right leg tightly, which would help to stop its bleeding. Obviously, Sue was too shocked by the accident to let out a word. Alexis talked softly to comfort the terrified woman and thought about how to help her father.
Then she heard her father yell. Michael had been knocked to the ground, his right leg speared by the buck. Alexis grabbed a hammer from the car and ran to where Michael lay on his back in the dirt. She beat the bucks head and neck, but the blows didn't work. Standing over her father, Alexis could see that he was struggling to breathe. Turning the hammer around, Alexis shut her eyes and hit the buck's neck. When she opened her eyes, the buck was running away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the hospital.
