When he first rose to stardom in the NBA, Yao Ming could not possibly have known the influence he would have on the American understanding of China.
In the eyes of many Americans, Chinese are short, bookish, and not especially athletic. Yao, 26, has turned that image on its head. A giant at 2.26 metres, he has been the most talked-about player in the league since he topped the NBA draft(选秀)in 2002.
When Yao first joined the Rockets and struggled with an American style of basketball, many were quick to label(标记)Yao "a failure". But Yao played on. He did not let the criticism affect his performance. Even when former NBA star Charles Barkley bet that Yao could not score more than 19 points in a single game, Yao kept his self-respect. The same cannot be said for Barkley, who was forced to kiss a real donkey's ass(屁股)when Yao passed the 19-point mark early in his first season.
For Americans, Yao's polite and friendly personality is a welcome contrast to the rude behaviour of the NBA's bad boys. Compared with most other NBA players, Yao Ming is a true gentleman. He respects all of his opponents(对手), even those who are not friendly to him.
"He is so wise and humourous that he seems like diplomat(外交家)rather than a basketball player sometimes," said Ron Burke, an NBA TV reporter.
In addition, Yao's witty answers have changed the opinion that Chinese people are boring. When asked what were his favourite English words, Yao told the press that the five words were "This is the last question." Yao is winning supporters within the league as well. After a Rockets-Lakers game that Shaquille O'Neal had to sit out with an injury, O'Neal said, "You played pretty good, Yao Ming." Yao replied, "That's because you weren't there."
24. What attitude do many people take with Yao Ming when he first joined the Rockets?
A. Doubtful. B. Friendly. C. Believable. D. Angry.
25. Yao Ming was liked by Americans mainly because he .
A. proved that he was athletic B. passed the 19-point mark early
C. beat former NBA star Charles Barkley D. showed his politeness and friendliness
26. By sharing the story between Yao Ming and O'Neal in the last paragraph, the writer shows us .
A. Yao Ming was boring and proud B. Yao Ming was respectful and smart
C. Yao Ming topped the NBA draft D. Yao Ming wasn't a failure any more
27. What's the main idea of the text?
A. Yao Ming's road to stardom.
B. The skills Yao Ming showed in NBA.
C. The impact of Yao Ming on Americans' attitudes towards Chinese.
D. Yao Ming's competition with other NBA players.

Standing on the ruins(废墟)after the fire where his house had been, Peter Ruprecht admitted that he was not sure how or when to rebuild. He was still shocked by what Australia's increasingly changeable climate had already delivered: first a drought, then a destructive bush fire, then a foot of rain from a storm.
"It's unstoppable," said Mr. Ruprecht, a former dairy farmer. "We speak about the warmth of Mother Nature, but nature can also be vicious and wild and unforgiving."
Australia's' hellish(地狱的)fire season has eased(缓和), but its people are facing more than a single disaster. With floods destroying homes not far from where fires recently spread, they are facing a cycle of what scientists call "compound extremes": one climate disaster strengthening the next.
Warmer temperatures do more than just dry out the land. They also heat up the atmosphere, which means clouds hold more moisture(水汽)for longer periods of time. So droughts get worse, giving way to fires, then to heavy rains that the land is too dry to absorb.
Many Australians in disaster zones complain that their government, after ignoring climate change for years, has not yet to draw up recovery plans that are clear and that take future threats into account.
At the same time, the economic costs of a changing climate are rising quickly. Philip Lowe, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, warned recently that Australia was already paying a price, and that it would only go up.
28. Why Peter Ruprecht is mentioned in the beginning?
A. To arouse readers' pity. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To stress the problem. D. To call on readers to help.
29. Which word can replace the underlined word "vicious" in Paragraph 1?
A. grateful B. advanced C. responsible D. forcible
30. What is the main cause of "compound extremes" in Australia?
A. Government inaction. B. Warmer temperature.
C. The lack of money. D. No recovery plans.
31. Where is the text probably from?
A. guidebook. B. A travel journal. C. A news report. D. A book review.

Killer whales, or orcas, are known for their severe attacks on sea animals but they have never posed a threat to humans. However since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29,2020, when a 46-foot boat was repeatedly attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate(旋转)180 degrees and having its engine turned off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On September 23,2020, Spain's government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in the 60-mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the attacks have been occurring.
Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas' behavior. Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefish tuna-the orcas' primary food source-which has left the areas' killer whales starving(饥饿)and unable to feed their babies. "I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages," says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, USA. The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic and fishing activities, after months of absence due to restrictions(限制)on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
However, Alfredo López, a biology professor in Galicia, Spain, thinks the attacks are defensive measures the orcas adopted to protect themselves against boat injuries. The researcher came to this conclusion(结果)after looking at the videos of a few incidents and noticing that two of the young killer whales involved had serious injuries. Hopefully, the experts will be able to find a way to restore the harmony between the animals and the humans soon.
32. What do we know about orcas in paragraph 1?
A. They are friendly to humans. B. They have changed their behavior.
C. They are famous for hunting skills. D. They have met hard living conditions.
33. Who hold(s)the idea that orcas' food shortages caused the incidents?
A. Ken Balcomb. B. The environmentalists.
C. Alfredo López. D. Spain's government.
34. What does the underlined word "the agitation" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The overfishing. B. The attacks. C. Food shortages. D. Human activities.
35. What might be a suitable title for this text?
A. Why are boats banned from sailing on the sea?
B. How do killer whales attack humans?
C. How can we live peacefully and well with animals?
D. Why Are Killer Whales attacking Boats?

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing(追逐)the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped(滑)and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.
"Help! Help!" We cried. could feel my body tingling(酸麻)as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. 第二节(满分25分)
Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard. Having learned what was happening, the lifeguard rushed fearlessly against the strong wind and huge waves. Such an experienced swimmer was he that he reached us in no time. He grabbed my arm and quickly carried me to the shore, where he left me taken care of by the two boys. Then, without delay, he returned to save my sister. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!
