While
bringing
global
change
may
take
some
time,
these
companies
and
individuals
have
already
developed
various
ways
to
reduce
plastic
pollution.
Plastic
Bank
According
to
its
founder
David
Katz,
"The
only
way
to
stop
ocean
plastic
is
to
show
the
value
to
the
collectors."
The
company
does
this
by
rewarding
people
who
collect
ocean
plastic
with
cash,
goods,
services.
The
garbage
collected
is
recycled
and
sold
to
companies
that
pay
above
market
prices
to
help
the
cause.
Liter
of
Light
Since
201l,
Liter
of
Light
has
been
transforming
plastic
bottles
into
light
sources(光源).There
are
millions
of
people
who
have
no
access
to
electricity.
The
company
attaches
plastic
bottles
filled
with
water
and
bleach
to
roofs.
They
reflect
sunlight
into
the
dark,
windowless
homes
during
the
day.
When
the
sun
sets,
a
micro
solar
panel(太阳能电池板)
helps
power
an
LED
bub(灯泡).
The
Ocean
Cleanup
Foundation
In
2013,18year-old
Boyan
Slat
dropped
out
of
college
to
start
The
Ocean
Cleanup
Foundation.
The
young
inventor
developed
the
first
operational
cleanup
system
in
the
Great
Pacific
Garbage
Patch.
The
system
is
designed
to
collect
the
surface
garbage
a8
it
floats
past.
The
accumulated
plastic
will
be
brought
to
land
for
recycling.
Slat
believes
his
invention
will
allow
us
to
clean
50
percent
of
the
patch
within
five
years.
You
and
Me
We
don't
have
to
be
part
of
a
major
movement
to
help
make
a
difference.
Simply
choosing
to
recycle,
reuse
or
avoiding
plastic
altogether
can
be
a
great
start
to
reduce
the
waste.
In
addition,
there
are
many
other
ways
to
reduce
our
ecological
footprint.
Consider
walking
instead
of
driving,
taking
shorter
showers,
ditching
plastic
straws,
or
even
planting
a
tree!
21.
What
does
Plastic
Bank
mainly
do
to
help
reduce
plastic
pollution?

They
invent
various
ways.
B.
They
reward
the
collectors.
C.They
found
a
recycling
company.
D.
They
call
on
the
public
to
plant
trees.
22.
How
can
plastic
bottles
become
light
sources?
A.
By
reflecting
sunlight.C.
By
working
with
a
solar
panel.

By
producing
electricity.

By
being
made
into
LED
bulbs.

B
The
other
day,
my
sister
and
I
were
sitting
in
the
restaurant,
trying
to
have
a
conversation,
but
her
children,
four-year-old
Willow
and
seven-year-old
Luca,
would
not
stop
fighting.
The
arguments-over
a
fork,
or
who
had
more
water
in
a
glass-never
stopped.
Then
my
sister
reached
into
her
handbag,
produced
two
shiny
iPads,
and
handed
one
to
each
child.
Suddenly,
the
two
were
quite.
They
sat
playing
games
and
watching
videos,
and
we
continued
with
our
conversation.
After
our
meal,
as
my
sister
stuffed
the
iPads
back
into
her
bag,
she
said,
“I
don’t
want
to
give
them
the
iPads
at
the
dinner
table,
but
if
they
keep
them
occupied
for
an
hour
so
we
can
eat
in
peace,
I
often
just
hand
them
over.
I
am
afraid
that
it’s
bad
for
them.
I
do
worry
that
it
makes
them
think
it’s
OK
to
use
electronics
at
the
dinner
table
in
the
future.”
Dr.
Gary
Small,
director
of
the
Longevity
Center
at
the
University
of
California,
Los
Angeles
says
thatthe
brain
is
highly
sensitive
to
stimuli(刺激物),like
iPads
and
smartphone
screen,
and
if
people
spend
too
much
time
on
one
technology,
and
less
time
interacting(互动)with
people
like
parents
at
the
dinner
table,
that
could
prevent
the
development
of
certain
communication
skills.
“Conversations
with
each
other
are
the
way
children
learn
to
have
conversations
with
themselves,
and
learn
how
to
be
alone,”
said
Sherry
Turkle,
a
professor
of
science,
technology
and
society
at
the
Massachusetts
Institute
of
Technology.
She
fears
that
children
who
do
not
learn
real
interactions,
which
often
have
imperfections,
will
come
to
know
a
world
where
perfect,
shiny
screens
give
them
a
false
sense
of
intimacy(亲密)without
risk.
However,
they
need
to
be
able
to
gather
themselves
and
know
who
they
are.
So
someday
they
can
form
a
relationship
with
another
person
without
a
panic
of
being
alone.
“If
you
don’t
teach
your
children
to
be
alone,
they
will
only
know
how
to
be
lonely,”
she
said.
24.
What
did
Willow
and
Luca
fight
about?
A.
Little
things.
B.
iPads.
C.
Delicious
food.
D.
Interesting
things.
25.
How
did
the
author’s
sister
feel
about
offering
children
iPads?
A.
She
was
critical
of
it.
B.
She
was
uncertain
about
it.
C.
She
felt
it
was
worth
a
try.
D.
She
felt
surprised
at
its
effect.
26.
According
to
Dr.
Small,
what
should
parents
do?
A.
Provide
their
children
with
various
technologies.
B.
Teach
their
children
communication
skills.
C.
Limit
their
children’s
screen
time.
D.
Talk
to
their
children
at
the
dinner
table.
27.
What
is
Sherry
Turkle
worried?
A.
Children
are
afraid
of
taking
risks.
B.
Children
try
to
escape
from
the
real
world.
C.
Children
can’t
deal
with
companion-less
situations.
D.
Children
can’t
live
without

Ingvar
Kamprad,
who
started
IKEA
as
a
teenager,
died
at
the
world's
biggest
furniture
companies.
There
are
two
aspects
of
modern
life
that
we
have
IKEA
to
thank
for:
flat-pack(平板包装)
furniture
and
a
shop
layout.
IKEA
first
brought
out
its
flat-pack
furniture
in
the
1950s.
Whether
you
love
or
hate
this
concept,
it
was
a
stroke
of
genius
and
an
effective
way
of
making
the
masses
value
the
brand.
Obvious
aspects
of
it
are
cost
efficiency
and
the
practicality
of
shipping.
When
IKEA
made
the
switch
away
from
selling
furniture
that
was
already
assembled,
it
was
most
likely
unaware
of
how
it
would
influence
its
consumers.Yet
scientists
have
since
managed
to
explain
why
consumers
simply
can’t
get
enough
of
building
their
own
furniture.The
simple
act
of
touching
products
can
increase
your
overall
perceived(感知到的)value
of
the
product.
Couple
this
with
the
fact
that
the
more
effort
a
consumer
has
put
into
building
something
the
more
they
like
it.
Tests
have
shown
that
the
actual
act
of
putting
something
together(even
though
there
may
be
sweat
and
tears
involved)so
that
it
becomes
a
complete
object
produces
a
much
more
favorable
perception
of
that
object
than
one
would
get
from
purchasing
it
in
a
complete
form.
The
phenomenon
is
known
as
the
IKEA
effect.
This
effect
is
further
enhanced
by
the
fact
that
touch
itself
is
related
to
emotion.
This
means
that
when
we
touch
something
the
emotive
part
of
our
brain
is
activated
so
that
we
experience
a
close
connection
with
the
product
emotionally
Thus,
the
happy
assembler
of
that
flat
pack
will,
once
finished,
feel
proud
of
their
achievement
and
experience
feelings
of
being
closely
connected
to
the
item.
The
layout
of
the
IKEA
store
has
also
paved
the
way
for
a
more
creative
way
of
thinking
about
how
to
guide
customers.
If
you
have
ever
visited
one
of
its
huge
warehouse
stores,
you
may
have
gone
in
thinking
you
were
going
to
buy
a
few
items,
only
to
find
yourself
coming
out
of
the
store
with
a
shopping
cart
full
of
things.
This
is
because
of
its
circular
design
and
one-way
system.
This
design
means
you
often
can't
see
what
is
coming
next
and
fear
you
will
miss
something
if
you
don't
continue
all
the
way
along
the
path.
IKEA's
creative
ability
to
tap
into
the
unconsciousness
of
consumers
is
undoubtedly
a
big
part
of
its
success--and
also
why
it's
been
copied
by
many
other
companies.
Even
though
Ingvar
Kamprad
is
no
longer
with
us,
IKEA
has
inherited
from
him
a
spirit
of
thinking
outside
the
box
to
communicate
with
consumers.
It
will
be
interesting
to
see
what
follows
next.
28.

Monday
dawned
warm
and
rainless.
Aurelio
Escovar,
a
dentist
without
a
degree,
opened
his
office
at
six.
When
he
had
a
handful
of
is
instruments
arranged
on
the
table,
he
sat
down
to
polish
the
false
teeth.
He
seemed
not
to
be
thinking
about
what
he
was
doing,
but
worked
steadily.
The
sharp
voice
of
his
eleven-year-old
son
interrupted
his
concentration.
"Papa.”
"What?
"The
Mayor
wants
to
know
if
you'll
pull
his
tooth."
"
Tell
him
I'm
not
here."
He
was
polishing
a
gold
tooth.
He
held
it
at
arm's
length,
and
examined
it
with
his
eyes
half
closed.
His
son
shouted
again
from
the
little
waiting
room.
"He
says
you
are,
too,
because
he
can
hear
you."
The
dentist
kept
examining
the
tooth.
Only
when
he
had
put
it
on
the
table
with
the
finished
work
did
he
say,
“So
much
the
better."
He
took
several
pieces
of
a
bridge
out
of
a
cardboard
box
where
he
kept
the
things
he
still
had
to
do
and
began
to
polish
the
gold.
"Papa."
"What?
He
still
hadn't
changed
his
expression.
"He
says
if
you
don't
take
out
his
tooth,
he'll
shoot
you."
Without
hurrying,
with
an
extremely
calm
movement,
he
stopped
his
work
and
pulled
the
lower
drawer
of
the
table
all
the
way
out.
There
was
a
revolver
(左轮手枪).“OK,"
he
said.
“Tell
him
to
come
and
shoot
me."
He
rolled
the
chair
over
opposite
the
door,
his
hand
resting
on
the
edge
of
the
drawer.
The
Mayor
appeared
at
the
door.
He
had
shaved
the
left
side
of
his
face,
but
the
other
side,
swollen
and
in
pain,
had
a
five-day-old
beard.
The
dentist
saw
many
nights
of
desperation
in
his
dull
eyes.
He
closed
the
drawer
with
his
fingertips
and
said
softy,
"'Sit
down."
"Good
morning,"
said
the
Mayor.
"Morning,"
said
the
dentist.
While
the
instruments
were
boiling,
the
Mayor
leaned
his
head
on
the
headrest
of
the
chair
and
felt
better.
His
breath
was
icy.
When
he
felt
the
dentist
approach,
the
Mayor
held
his
breath
and
opened
his
mouth.
Aurelio
Escovar
turned
his
bead
toward
the
light.
After
inspecting
the
infected
tooth,
he
closed
the
Mayor's
jaw
with
a
cautious
pressure
of
his
fingers.
“It
has
to
be
without
anesthesia
(麻醉),"
he
said.
"Why?"
"Because
you
have
an
abscess
(脓肿)."
The
Mayor
looked
him
in
the
eye.
“All
right,"
he
said,
and
tried
to
smile.
The
dentist
did
not
return
the
smile.
He
did
all
the
preparation
work
without
looking
at
the
Mayor.
It
was
a
lower
wisdom
tooth.
The
dentist
spread
his
feet
and
grasped
the
tooth
with
the
hot
forceps
(钳子).
The
Mayor
seized
the
arms
of
the
chair
with
all
his
strength.
The
dentist
moved
only
his
wrist.
Without
rancor
(怨恨)
rather
with
a
bitter
tenderness
he
said,
"Now
you'll
pay
for
our
twenty
dead
men."
The
Mayor
felt
the
great
pain
in
his
jaw,
and
his
eyes
filled
with
tears.
But
he
didn't
breathe
until
he
felt
the
tooth
come
out.
Then
he
saw
it
through
his
tears.
It
seemed
so
foreign
to
his
pain
that
he
filed
to
understand
his
torture
of
the
five
previous
nights.
The
dentist
gave
him
a
clean
cloth.
"Dry
your
tears,"
he
said.
The
Mayor
did.
He
was
trembling.
While
the
dentist
washed
his
hands,
he
saw
the
shabby
ceiling
and
a
dusty
spider
web
with
spider's
eggs
and
dead
insects.
The
dentist
returned,
drying
his
hands.
“Go
to
bed,"
he
said,
"and
gargle
(漱口)
with
salt
water.”
The
Mayor
stood
up,
said
goodbye
with
a
casual
military
solute,
and
walked
toward
the
door,
stretching
his
legs.
"Send
the
bill,
he
said.
"To
you
or
the
town?"
The
Mayor
didn't
look
at
him.
He
closed
the
door.

Colleen
and
her
husband
were
part
of
a
group
walking
the
Overland
Track.
It
was
the
fifth
day
of
a
6-day
walk.
The
guide,
who
was
waiting
for
them
at
the
nearest
camp,
had
36
them
about
the
slippery
and
potentially
dangerous
conditions.
Colleen,
an
experienced
adventurer
from
Sydney,
was
a
naturally
37
walker.
She
walked
in
front
of
her
husband
and
carefully
checked
the
safety
of
the
track
when
they
were
going
down
a
steep
slope
(陡坡).
Suddenly
she
heard
a
cracking
sound
from
38
.
“When
I
realized
what
was
happening,
I
was
heading
to
a
deep
ditch
(沟壑),
my
pack
on
my
back.”
Colleen’s
fall
was
only
broken
by
the
presence
of
a
branch
that
stretched
across
the
ditch
and
39
her
from
a
fall
that
could
otherwise
have
been
deadly.
Colleen
hit
her
head
badly
and
went
into
40
.
She
soon
woke
up
and
turned
around
to
see
her
husband
sitting
stunned
on
the
side
of
the
track.
He
had
41
fallen
from
the
top.
He
had
first
slipped
above
Colleen,
and
his
full
weight,
with
his
pack,
42
down
on
top
of
her.
He
was
uninjured,
and
Colleen
was
suspended
on
the
branch.
He
reached
out
to
grab
Colleen’s
arm.
Colleen
felt
so
43
,
the
worst
physical
suffering
she
had
ever
felt
in
her
life.
She
knew
44
that
her
arm
was
broken.
Her
husband
took
her
pack
along
with
his
own
and
together
they
examined
for
the
final
three
kilometers
to
the
camp.
Once
they
reached
the
camp,
the
guide
gave
her
first
aid
and
called
for
the
rescue
helicopter
immediately.
Colleen
was
45
to
the
nearest
hospital
by
helicopter.
She
was
46
in
the
hospital
and
was
told
that
her
head
and
neck
were
okay,
but
her
arm
had
been
broken
in
four
places.
Later,
Colleen
47
with
emotion.
“After
this
personal
experience
of
near-death
and
being
saved,
I
realized
that
in
some
situations
there’s
absolutely
no
48
to
get
to
hospital,
and
the
rescue
helicopter
was
the
only
way.
At
that
moment,
the
most
49
noise
was
hearing
the
helicopter
come.
The

workers

so

How
to
Improve
Your
Study
Habits
Perhaps
you
are
an
average
student
with
average
intelligence.
You
do
well
enough
in
school,
but
you
probably
think
you
will
never
be
a
top
student.
51.
_______
Yes,
even
students
of
average
intelligence
can
be
top
students
without
additional
work.
Here
are
some
tips
for
you:
1.
Plan
your
time
carefully.
Make
a
list
of
your
weekly
tasks.
Then
make
a
schedule
or
chart
of
your
time.
Fill
in
committed
time
such
as
eating,
sleeping,
meetings,
classes,
etc.
Then
decide
on
good,
regular
times
for
studying.
52._______
It’s
important
to
set
aside
time
for
relaxation,
hobbies,
and
entertainment
as
well.
Furthermore,
it
will
enable
you
to
plan
your
activities
so
that
you
have
enough
time
for
both
work
and
play.
2.
Find
a
good
place
to
study.
Choose
one
place
for
your
study
area.
It
may
be
a
desk
or
a
chair
at
home
or
in
the
school
library,
but
it
should
be
comfortable,
and
it
should
not
have
distractions.
When
you
begin
to
work,
you
should
be
able
to
concentrate
on
the
subject.
3.
53._______
Listening
to
what
the
teacher
says
in
class
means
less
work
later.
Sit
where
you
can
see
and
hear
well.
Take
notes
to
help
you
remember
what
the
teacher
says.
4.
Study
regularly.
54._______
Review
important
points
mentioned
in
class
as
well
as
points
you
remain
confused
about.
If
you
review
your
notes
and
textbook
regularly,
the
material
will
become
more
meaningful
and
you
will
remember
it
longer.
Regular
review
leads
to
improved
performances
on
test.
5.
Develop
a
good
attitude
about
tests.
The
purpose
of
a
test
is
to
show
what
you
have
learned
about
a
subject.
The
world
won’t
end
if
you
don’t
pass
a
test,
so
don’t
worry
excessively
about
a
single
test.
Tests
provide
more
than
grades.
55.
_______
A.
Be
volunteer
to
raise
questions.
B.
Make
good
use
of
your
time
in
class.
C.
Go
over
your
notes
as
soon
as
you
can
after
class.
D.
Those
who
make
the
best
of
their
time
study
with
more
ease.
E.
They
also
let
you
know
what
you
need
to
spend
more
time
studying
on.
F.
Of
course,
studying
shouldn’t
occupy
all
of
the
free
time
on
the
schedule.
G.
This
is
not
necessary
the
case,
however.
You
can
receive
better
grades
if
you
want
to.

One
day,
when
I
was
a
freshman
in
high
school,
I
saw
a
kid
from
my
class
walking
home
from
school.
His
name
was
Kyle.
It
looked
like
he
was
carrying
all
of
his
books.
I
thought
to
myself:
“Why
would
anyone
bring
home
all
his
books
on
a
Friday?
He
must
really
be
a
nerd
(书呆子).”
As
I
was
walking,
I
saw
a
bunch
of
kids
running
toward
him.
They
ran
at
him,
knocking
all
his
books
out
of
his
arms
and
tripping
him
so
he
landed
in
the
dirt.
His
glasses
went
flying,
and
I
saw
them
land
in
the
grass
about
ten
feet
from
him.
He
looked
up
and
I
saw
this
terrible
sadness
in
his
eyes.
So,
I
jogged
over
to
him
and
as
he
crawled
around
looking
for
his
glasses,
I
saw
a
tear
in
his
eye.
As
I
handed
him
his
glasses,
he
said,
“thanks!”
There
was
a
big
smile
on
his
face.
It
was
one
of
those
smiles
that
showed
real
gratitude.
We
talked
all
the
way
home,
and
I
carried
his
books.
He
turned
out
to
be
a
pretty
cool
kid.
The
more
I
got
to
know
Kyle,
the
more
I
liked
him.
Over
next
four
years,
Kyle
and
I
became
the
best
friends.
When
we
were
seniors,
he
had
the
highest
marks
in
the
class
and
was
chosen
to
give
a
speech
at
the
graduation
ceremony.
I
teased
him
all
the
time
about
being
a
nerd.
He
had
to
prepare
a
lot,
and
I
was
so
glad
it
wasn’t
me
having
to
get
up
there
and
speak.
Graduation
day,
I
saw
Kyle.
I
said,
“Hey,
big
guy,
you’ll
be
great!”
He
looked
at
me
with
one
of
those
looks,
the
really
grateful
one,
and
said
“Thanks,”
smiling.
As
he
started
his
speech,
he
cleared
his
throat,
and
began.
“Graduation
is
a
time
to
thank
those
who
helped
you
make
it
through
those
tough
years.
Your
parents,
your
teachers,
your
siblings,
maybe
a
coach...but
mostly
your
friends.
I
am
here
to
tell
all
of
you
that
being
a
friend
to
someone
is
the
best
gift
you
can
give
him
or
her.
I
am
going
to
tell
you
a
story.”

Dear
Tom,
How
are
you?
Glad
to
tell
you
something
about
mobile
payment
in
China.
Mobile
payment
is
most
popular
in
China.
It
has
made
people'
s
daily
life
more
and
more
convenient.
Most
of
us
are
used
to
paying
by
scanning
QR
codes.
By
mobile
payment,
we
can
pay
easily
wherever
we
go.
We
can
buy
breakfast
on
the
street
and
pay
by
scanning
with
our
smart
phones.
In
the
subway
station,
we
can
scan
with
our
smart
phones
to
purchase
our
tickets.
This
is
a
glimpse
of
most
Chinese
people'
s
life--
allowing
us
to
bid
farewell
to
the
wallets
and
bankcards.
Mobile
payment
has
greatly
changed
people's
lives
in
China.
It
seems
that
China
is
really
leading
in
some
ways
and
it
is
also
sweeping
other
nations.
Looking
forward
to
hearing
from
you.
Yours,
Li
Hua

I
just
looked
at
my
friend
with
disbelief
as
he
told
the
story
of
the
first
day
we
met.
Kyle
had
planned
to
kill
himself
over
the
weekend.
He
talked
of
how
he
had
cleaned
out
his
locker
so
his
Mom
wouldn’t
have
to
do
it
later
and
was
carrying
his
stuff
home.
Meanwhile,
I
found
he
looked
hard
at
me
and
gave
me
a
little
smile.
“Thankfully,
I
was
saved.
My
friend
saved
me
from
doing
the
unspeakable.”
I
heard
the
gasp
go
through
the
crowd
as
this
handsome,
popular
boy
told
us
all
about
his
weakest
moment.
When
his
eyes
caught
mine,
I
was
able
to
see
tears
shimmered
in
his
smiling
eyes.
I
smiled
back
in
tears.
Not
until
that
moment
did
I
realize
what
big
difference
one
small
gesture
had
made
to
him.
I
even
saw
his
Mom
and
Dad
looking
at
me
and
smiling
that
same
grateful
smile.
It
dawned
on
me
that
never
should
we
underestimate
the
power
of
our
actions.
With
one
small
gesture
we
can
change
a
person’s
life.
For
better
or
for
worse.
