M:
I’ll
tell
you
what
the
matter
is.
I’ve
just
come
back
from
room

-
my
wallet
is
gone!
W:
I’m
terribly
sorry,
sir.
That
is
awful.
And
you
are
sure
you
locked
your
door
before
you
left?
M:
I’m
sure.
I
had
to
get
back
in
with
my
key

Those
doors
won’t
stay
open,
anyway.
They
just
shut
behind
you.
W:
Hmm.
You’re

And
your

do
you
still
have
that?
M:
Yes,
that
was
in
the
drawer.
My
wallet

on
the
counter

Did
you

you

the

M:
Of

This

What

that

with
anything?
You

someone
climbed
up
the
tree
and
came
in
through
the
window?
W:
Not
someone,
something…
M:
You

squirrel?

That’s
right,
sir.
You

drop
it
by
the
tree
once
they
realize
it’s
not
food.
Let’s
walk

the
meeting
area
here
and
go

You
can
see
it
has
a
great
view
over
the
city,
and
it
is
a
good
price
considering
its
location.
M:
Wow,
you’re
not
kidding!
That’s
a
great
view
over
the
harbor!
W:
Isn’t
it?
And
these
windows
let
in
a
lot
of
sun
during
the
day
to
keep
you
warm.
M:
Anything
else
that’s
important
to
know?
W:
It’s
got
everything

washer,
dryer,
dishwasher…you
name
it.
There’s
an
extra
room
for
storage,
or
you
could
even
turn
it
into
an
office,
if
you’d

M:
Hmm.
I
wonder
how
I
would
get
my
furniture
all
the
way
up
to
the
13th
floor,
though.
That
could
be
a
problem.
W:
There’s
an
elevator
for
that.
It
goes
all
the
way
down
to
the
underground
parking.
M:
Okay.
What
about
the
bills?
W:
Heating
and
water
are
included
in
the
rent,
although
electricity,
cable
TV,
and
Internet
access
are
not.
Rent
is
$3,000
per
month.
M:
All
right.
The
first
place
we
looked
at
included
everything,
correct?
The
basement
suite?
W:
Yes,
prices
are
a
little
different
outside
the
city.
That’s
why
it’s
$1,600
cheaper.
M:
I
see.
And
the
studio?
That
was
$2,000
a
month,
right?
W:
Yes,
but
I
seem
to
remember
you
saying
you
were
worried
about
the
noise
at
night,
due
to
all
the
bars
close
by.
M:
True.
Well,
I
have
a
lot
to
think
about.
Thank
you
for
your
time.

【原文】Good
morning,
everyone!
I’d
like
to
show
my
warm
welcome
to
all
the
new
members.
My
name
is
Alex
and
I’ve
been
a
lifeguard
for
three
years.
After
working
in
offices
and
hotels
for
two
years,
I
find
this
job
more
satisfying.
If
you
love
to
work
outdoors
and
you
are
good
at
swimming,
it’s
a
great
job.
By
doing
this
job,
you’ll
be
able
to
help
people
so
that
you
will
feel
very
proud.
And
for
me,
the
best
part
of
the
job
is
protecting
people
from
danger
and
knowing
a
lot
of
people.
Of
course,
your
main
responsibilities
will
involve
ensuring
the
safety
of
everyone
who
swims
here.
In
other
words,
you
will
have
to
be
watching
out
for
people
who
are
swimming
and
warn
them
of
danger.
You
also
should
be
very
careful
and
discover
those
in
danger
very
instantly.
And
to
help
those
who
are
in
danger,
you
will
have
to
know
some
basic
first
aid.
So
first
you
will
begin
training
for
first
aid.
We
take
great
pride
in
our
ability
to
get
people
away
from
danger.
All
in
all,
I
think
being
a
lifeguard
is
an
amazing
job.
I
hope
you
will
fall
in
love
with
the
job.
第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的
A、B、C

D
四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项涂黑。
A
The
novel,
Of
Human
Bondage,
is
considered
a
masterpiece
of
the
20th
century.
It
is
also
a
semi-autobiographical(半自传的)story
of
author
W.
Somerset
Maugham.
At
first
glance,the
book
seems
like
an
anti-fairytale,
going
against
the
usual
moral
values
of
courage
and
kindness.
However,
readers
will
see
that
the
English
author
was
exploring
the
same
kind
of
values.
The
only
difference
is
that
he
delivered
his
message
through
a
story
with
more
suffering.
The
main
character,
Philip
Carey,
leads
a
difficult
life.
Besides
having
to
live
with
a
clubfoot
(畸形足),
his
peers
make
fun
of
him
for
it.
Though
he
is
offered
a
scholarship
from
Oxford,
he
turns
it
down.
He
would
rather
study
“things
that
matter”
in
Germany.
He
generously
helps
a
woman
with
whom
he
is
fascinated,
but
this
causes
him
to
drop
out
of
medical
school---he
gave
her
all
his
money.
Penniless,
he
becomes
a
hunger-stricken
vagabond(流浪汉),
takes
a
low-paid
job
for
the
sake
of
survival,
and
finally
gets
back
to
medical
training
and
settles
down.
Philip's
altruism(利他主义)is
often
regarded
as
a
weakness
by
other
characters,
but
does
this
lead
to
his
downfall?
Quite
the
opposite.
Philip's
goodwill
to
a
patient,
Mr.
Athelny,
led
to
him
marrying
the
eldest
Atpelny
girl,
who
cherishes(珍惜)
him
with
all
her
heart.
What
is
more,
even
in
his"unsuccessful"early
days,
Philip's
courage
in
unfavorable
circumstances
helps
him
form
friendships
and
a
support
network
that
get
him
through
tough
times.
This
is
how
he
finds
his
most
valued
long-term
companions.
Last
but
not
least,
his
hardships
give
him
empathy(共情).
As
French
writer
Romain
Rolland
put
it,
“There
is
only
one
heroism
in
the
world:
to
see
the
world
as
it
is,
and
to
love
it.”
Of
Human
Bondage
demonstrates(验证)
that.
21.
What
is
the
third
paragraph
mainly
about?
A.
Philip
Carey's
bad
marriage.
B.
Philip
Carey's
foot
disability.
C.
Philip
Carey's
tough
life.
D.
Philip
Carey's
generosity.
22.
What
can
we
conclude
from
Philip
Carey's
story?
A.
It
is
never
too
late
to
mend.
B.
Kindness
wins
out.
C.
Experience
must
be
bought.
D.
No
gains
without
pains.
23.

Attention
managers:
the
next
time
you
need
to
inspire
your
team
creatively,
be
more
attentive
to
your
employees’
feelings
when
you
deliver
negative
feedback.
Kim,
who
worked
as
a
software
engineer
for
Samsung
after
graduation
from
college,
is
familiar
with
having
his
creative
work
picked
apart.
“I
personally
hate
hearing
negative
feedback
as
most
people
do
and
I
wondered
if
it
really
improved
my
performance,
particularly
when
it
came
to
completing
creative
tasks.”
In
two
studies,
Kim
found
that
negative
feedback
could
help
or
prevent
creativity.
What
was
most
important
was
where
the
criticism
comes
from.
When
creative
professionals
or
participants
received
criticism
from
a
boss
or
a
peer,
they
tended
to
be
less
creative
in
their
later
work.
Interestingly,
if
a
person
received
negative
feedback
from
an
employee
of
lower
rank,
they
became
more
creative.
It
makes
sense
that
employees
might
feel
threatened
by
criticism
from
their
managers.
Supervisors
(监督员,管理者)
have
a
lot
of
power
in
deciding
promotions
or
pay
raises.
So
negative
feedback
from
a
boss
might
cause
career
anxiety.
It
also
stands
to
reason
that
feedback
from
a
co-worker
might
also
be
received
as
threatening.
We
often
compete
with
our
peers
for
the
same
promotions
and
chances.
What
Kim
found
most
surprising
was
how
criticism
proved
to
improve
supervisors
through
lessons
learned
from
negative
feedback
that
came
from
their
followers
(employees
that
they
manage).
“But
we
tend
to
believe
we
shouldn’t
criticize
the
boss,”
says
Kim.
In
reality,
most
supervisors
don’t
hate
negative
feedback
since
they
want
to
learn
from
it.
Another
reason
is
that
they
are
in
a
natural
power
position
and
can
deal
with
the
discomfort
of
negative
feedback
better.
As
for
giving
suggestions
to
employees,
bosses
should
point
out
a
follower’s
poor
performance
or
weak
points
in
time.
But
they
should
keep
their
feedback
specific
to
tasks.
Explain
how
the
point
they’re
discussing
relates
to
only
their
task
behavior,
not
to
aspects
of
the
person.
Meanwhile,
feedback
receivers
need
to
worry
less
when
it
comes
to
receiving
criticism.
24.
What’s
the
purpose
of
Kim’s
study?
A.
To
improve
his
essays
for
graduation.
B.
To
know
the
influence
of
criticism
on
creativity.
C.
To
compete
with
co-workers
for
promotions
and
chances.
D.
To
encourage
a
culture
of
criticizing
each
other
in
the
workplace.
25.
What
amazed
Kim
mostly
in
the
study?
A.
Some
people
enjoy
negative
feedback.
B.
Managers’
criticism
can
prevent
creativity.
C.
Followers’
criticism
may
benefit
managers.
D.
Criticism
from
co-workers
can
cause
anxiety.
26.
Which
of
the
following
would
the
author
agree
with?
A.
Workers
should
accept
all
the
criticism
from
others.
B.
People
should
try
to
avoid
criticizing
their
co-workers.
C.
Bosses
should
give
criticism
specifically
and
appropriately.
D.
Workers
should
avoid
exposing
their
own
personal
matters.

第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It
is
a
question
people
have
been
asking
for
ages._____31_____For
centuries,
people
have

looking
for
a
“fountain

The
idea
is
that
if
you

quizzed。
【59题详解】

62题详解】
考查副词。句意:然而,研究显示,十分之一的人在一天内放弃了,而近五分之一的人成功坚持了一周或更久。分析句子可知,前后为转折关系,且修饰后文整个句子,用副词,故答案为However。
【63题详解】

【64题详解】
考查定语从句。句意:很多人将体重的增加归咎于他们给自己施加的过快减肥的压力,这让他们有了更大的胃口。此句为非限制性定语从句,且从句中缺少主语,故用关系代词which引导,that不能引导非限制性定语从句,故答案为which。

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整故事。
It
was
a
peaceful
afternoon.
In
the
yard,
the
deep
green
pine
trees,
and
the
sunshine
mixed
to
create
a
beautiful
woven
blanket
spread
out
upon
the
ground.
However,
in
the
far
corner
of
the
yard,
there
was
an
anxious
girl,
Elsa,
carrying
a
bunch
of
roses.
“Beautiful
flowers
for...for...,
I’ll
never
get
it
right!”
she
cried,
throwing
the
roses
on
the
ground.
Elsa
had
been
practising
her
speech
for
a
week,
during
which
she’d
presented
flowers
to
dogs,
cats,
and
statues
but
all
the
efforts
were
in
vain.
Actually,
part
of
her
couldn’t
wait.
This
Saturday,
the
great
Catherine
Spears,
famous
pianist,
would
perform
at
the
concert
hall
in
the
town.
For
four
years,
Elsa
had
listened
to
Ms.
Spears’s
recordings
over
and
over
again
loving
the
way
the
notes
tumbled
like
a
rushing
mountain
stream.
But
part
of
Elsa
was
terrified.
Her
music
teacher
at
school,
Mr.
Leaf,
had
asked
Elsa
to
present
the
flowers
to
Ms.
Spears
after
the
performance.
Why
did
he
choose
her?
Elsa
hated
talking
in
front
of
people.
Each
night,
Elsa
dreamed
about
music,
spotlights,
and
shining
grand
piano.
Sometimes
she
forgot
the
words
and
Ms.
Spears
rushed
offstage
before
Elsa
could
say
anything!
Other
times
she
tripped
and
lay
prone
on
the
floor.
Despite
all
these
terrible
dreams,
Elsa
kept
practising.
“Beautiful
flowers
for
a
beautiful
performance...”
Then,
finally,
the
big
day
came.
As
the
lights
dimmed,
Ms.
Spears
walked
onto
the
stage
wearing
a
black
gown.
Smiling,
she
bowed,
made
her
graceful
way
to
the
piano,
took
her
seat
and
then
began
to
play.
Her
fingers
danced
across
the
keys.
She
swayed
and
nodded
with
her
shiny
black
ponytail
bobbing.
Back
and
forth
she
raced
her
feet
among
the
pedals.
Drawn
to
the
music,
Elsa
forgot
her
anxiety.
Suddenly,
a
burst
of
thunderous
applause
brought
Elsa
back
to
reality.
The
frightening
moment
was
almost
there.

第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的
A、B、C

D
四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项涂黑。
A
The
novel,
Of
Human
Bondage,
is
considered
a
masterpiece
of
the
20th
century.
It
is
also
a
semi-autobiographical(半自传的)story
of
author
W.
Somerset
Maugham.
At
first
glance,the
book
seems
like
an
anti-fairytale,
going
against
the
usual
moral
values
of
courage
and
kindness.
However,
readers
will
see
that
the
English
author
was
exploring
the
same
kind
of
values.
The
only
difference
is
that
he
delivered
his
message
through
a
story
with
more
suffering.
The
main
character,
Philip
Carey,
leads
a
difficult
life.
Besides
having
to
live
with
a
clubfoot
(畸形足),
his
peers
make
fun
of
him
for
it.
Though
he
is
offered
a
scholarship
from
Oxford,
he
turns
it
down.
He
would
rather
study
“things
that
matter”
in
Germany.
He
generously
helps
a
woman
with
whom
he
is
fascinated,
but
this
causes
him
to
drop
out
of
medical
school---he
gave
her
all
his
money.
Penniless,
he
becomes
a
hunger-stricken
vagabond(流浪汉),
takes
a
low-paid
job
for
the
sake
of
survival,
and
finally
gets
back
to
medical
training
and
settles
down.
Philip's
altruism(利他主义)is
often
regarded
as
a
weakness
by
other
characters,
but
does
this
lead
to
his
downfall?
Quite
the
opposite.
Philip's
goodwill
to
a
patient,
Mr.
Athelny,
led
to
him
marrying
the
eldest
Atpelny
girl,
who
cherishes(珍惜)
him
with
all
her
heart.
What
is
more,
even
in
his"unsuccessful"early
days,
Philip's
courage
in
unfavorable
circumstances
helps
him
form
friendships
and
a
support
network
that
get
him
through
tough
times.
This
is
how
he
finds
his
most
valued
long-term
companions.
Last
but
not
least,
his
hardships
give
him
empathy(共情).
As
French
writer
Romain
Rolland
put
it,
“There
is
only
one
heroism
in
the
world:
to
see
the
world
as
it
is,
and
to
love
it.”
Of
Human
Bondage
demonstrates(验证)
that.
21.
What
is
the
third
paragraph
mainly
about?
A
Philip
Carey's
bad
marriage.
B.
Philip
Carey's
foot
disability.
C.
Philip
Carey's
tough
life.
D.
Philip
Carey's
generosity.
22.
What
can
we
conclude
from
Philip
Carey's
story?
A.
It
is
never
too
late
to
mend.
B.
Kindness
wins
out.
C.
Experience
must
be
bought.
D.
No
gains
without
pains.
23.
What
is
the
author's
attitude
towards
the
novel
Of
Human
Bondage?
A.
Doubtful.
B.
Reserved.
C.
Objective.
D.
Appreciative.
B
Attention
managers:
the
next
time
you
need
to
inspire
your
team
creatively,
be
more
attentive
to
your
employees’
feelings
when
you
deliver
negative
feedback.
Kim,
who
worked
as
a
software
engineer
for
Samsung
after
graduation
from
college,
is
familiar
with
having
his
creative
work
picked
apart.
“I
personally
hate
hearing
negative
feedback
as
most
people
do
and
I
wondered
if
it
really
improved
my
performance,
particularly
when
it
came
to
completing
creative
tasks.”
In
two
studies,
Kim
found
that
negative
feedback
could
help
or
prevent
creativity.
What
was
most
important
was
where
the
criticism
comes
from.
When
creative
professionals
or
participants
received
criticism
from
a
boss
or
a
peer,
they
tended
to
be
less
creative
in
their
later
work.
Interestingly,
if
a
person
received
negative
feedback
from
an
employee
of
lower
rank,
they
became
more
creative.
It
makes
sense
that
employees
might
feel
threatened
by
criticism
from
their
managers.
Supervisors
(监督员,管理者)
have
a
lot
of
power
in
deciding
promotions
or
pay
raises.
So
negative
feedback
from
a
boss
might
cause
career
anxiety.
It
also
stands
to
reason
that
feedback
from
a
co-worker
might
also
be
received
as
threatening.
We
often
compete
with
our
peers
for
the
same
promotions
and
chances.
What
Kim
found
most
surprising
was
how
criticism
proved
to
improve
supervisors
through
lessons
learned
from
negative
feedback
that
came
from
their
followers
(employees
that
they
manage).
“But
we
tend
to
believe
we
shouldn’t
criticize
the
boss,”
says
Kim.
In
reality,
most
supervisors
don’t
hate
negative
feedback
since
they
want
to
learn
from
it.
Another
reason
is
that
they
are
in
a
natural
power
position
and
can
deal
with
the
discomfort
of
negative
feedback
better.
As
for
giving
suggestions
to
employees,
bosses
should
point
out
a
follower’s
poor
performance
or
weak
points
in
time.
But
they
should
keep
their
feedback
specific
to
tasks.
Explain
how
the
point
they’re
discussing
relates
to
only
their
task
behavior,
not
to
aspects
of
the
person.
Meanwhile,
feedback
receivers
need
to
worry
less
when
it
comes
to
receiving
criticism.
24.
What’s
the
purpose
of
Kim’s
study?
A.
To
improve
his
essays
for
graduation.
B.
To
know
the
influence
of
criticism
on
creativity.
C.
To
compete
with
co-workers
for
promotions
and
chances.
D.
To
encourage
a
culture
of
criticizing
each
other
in
the
workplace.
25.
What
amazed
Kim
mostly
in
the
study?
A.
Some
people
enjoy
negative
feedback.
B.
Managers’
criticism
can
prevent
creativity.
C.
Followers’
criticism
may
benefit
managers.
D.
Criticism
from
co-workers
can
cause
anxiety.
26.
Which
of
the
following
would
the
author
agree
with?
A.
Workers
should
accept
all
the
criticism
from
others.
B.
People
should
try
to
avoid
criticizing
their
co-workers.
C.
Bosses
should
give
criticism
specifically
and
appropriately.
D.
Workers
should
avoid
exposing
their
own
personal
matters.
C
Starting
in
the
late
1980s,
the
plastics
industry
spent
tens
of
millions
of
dollars
encouraging
recycling
through
advertisements
and
recycling
projects,
telling
people
plastics
could
be
recycled.
But
their
own
internal
records
showed
that
industry
officials
long
knew
that
plastic
recycling
on
a
large
scale
came
with
high
costs
but
poor
results.
A
report
sent
to
top
industry
directors
in
April
1973
said
that
plastic
recycling
was
not
as
easy
as
people
thought
and
sorting
plastics
was
impractical.
Another
document
a
year
later
showed
that
there
was
serious
doubt
widespread
that
plastic
recycling
could
get
profits
on
an
economic
basis.
Despite
this,
three
former
top
officials
said
the
industry
supports
recycling
as
a
way
to
beat
back
a
growing
trend
of
stopping
using
plastics
in
the
1980s.
“The
plastics
industry
is
under
fire,
but
we
want
to
continue
to
make
plastic
products,”
Thomas,
an
official
from
a
company
making
plastics
says,
“If
the
public
think
the
recycling
is
working,
then
they’re
not
going
to
be
so
worried
about
the
environment.”
“The
public
gradually
doubt
the
idea
that
the
plastics
industry
could
do
a
satisfying
job
in
dealing
with
plastics
and
protecting
the
environment.
But
now
we
have
already
funded
new
technologies
to
change
this
situation.
We
don’t
want
to
see
the
pollution
of
the
environment
either
and
are
willing
to
solve
this
problem,”
says
Jim
Becker,
vice
president
of
Chevron
Phillips
Chemical
Company.
However,
the
more
plastics
are
recycled,
the
less
money
the
industry
will
make.
And
the
industry
now
produces
many
more
different
and
complex
kinds
of
plastics
that
are
more
costly
to
sort
and
in
many
cases
can’t
be
recycled
at
all.
Efforts
to
reduce
the
use
of
plastics
are
increasing
worldwide,
but
any
plan
to
slow
the
growth
of
plastics
will
cause
the
whole
industry
to
lose
billions
of
dollars
in
the
future.
27.
According
to
the
passage,
the
plastics
industry
.
A.
tried
to
teach
people
to
sort
plastic
products
B.
knew
that
plastic
recycling
will
bring
good
results
C.
thought
environmental
problems

underlined
phrase
“under
fire”
in
Paragraph
3
most
probably
means
.
A.
criticized
severely
B.
increasingly
popular
C.
growing
fast
D.
declining
rapidly
29.
What
can
be
learned
from
Becker’s
words?
A.
He
encourages
people
to
buy
high-tech
plastic
products.
B.
The
plastics
industry
is
highly
thought
of
for
its
devotion.
C.
He
has
convinced
the
public
of
the
plastics
industry’s
efforts.
D.
The
plastics
industry
starts
taking
on
more
social
responsibilities.
30.
What’s
the
main
idea
of
the
last
paragraph?
A.
Reducing
plastics
production
has
become
a
new
trend.
B.
Changes
in
plastics
increase
the
difficulty
of
recycling.
C.
Plastic
recycling
puts
the
plastics
industry
in
a

第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It
is
a
question
people
have
been
asking
for
ages._____31_____For
centuries,
people
have
been
looking
for
a
“fountain
of
youth”.
The
idea
is
that
if
you
find
a
magical
fountain
and
drink
from
its
waters,
you
will
not
become
old.
Researchers
in
New
York
did
not
find
a
fountain
of
youth
in
fact,
but
they
may
have
found
a
way
to
turn
back
the
aging
process.
It
appears
that
the
answer
may
be
hidden
right
between
your
eyes,
in
an
area
called
the
hypothalamus(丘脑下部).
It
is
part
of
your
brain.
___32___
A
professor
at
New
York's
Albert
Einstein
College
of
Medicine,
found
that
hypothalamus
influences
how
fast
aging
takes
place
in
the
body.____33____“So
when
hypothalamus
function
is
in
decline,
this
protection
against
the
aging
development
is
lost.
It
finally
leads
to
aging.”
Using
this
information,
the
researchers
began
trying
to
activate
(

)
the
hypothalamus
in
mice.
They
did
this
by
putting
hypothalamus
stem
cells
from
younger
mice
into
middle-aged
animals.
Later,
the
researchers
examined
mice
and
tested
for
changes
in
behavior.____34____The
results
showed
that
the
treatment
slowed
aging
in
the
animals.
It
is
said
when
hypothalamus
stem
cells,
which
came
from
young
mice
was
put
into
middle-aged
mice,
the
mice
aged
slowly
and
they
also
increased
the
length
of
their
lives.____35____If
the
mice
can
live
longer,
does
that
mean
people
could
have
longer
lives?
This
needs
further
study.
A.
It
controls
important
activities
within
the
body.
B.
Is
there
a
possible
way
to
turn
back
the
aging
process?
C.
But
these
findings
were
just
from
studying
mice
in
a
lab.
D.
He
also
reported
that

第二节:读后续写(满分
25
分)
67.
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It
was
a
peaceful
afternoon.
In
the
yard,
the
deep
green
pine
trees,
and
the
sunshine
mixed
to
create
a
beautiful
woven
blanket
spread
out
upon
the
ground.
However,
in
the
far
corner
of
the
yard,
there
was
an
anxious
girl,
Elsa,
carrying
a
bunch
of
roses.
“Beautiful
flowers
for...for...,
I’ll
never
get
it
right!”
she
cried,
throwing
the
roses
on
the
ground.
Elsa
had
been
practising
her
speech
for
a
week,
during
which
she’d
presented
flowers
to
dogs,
cats,
and
statues
but
all
the
efforts
were
in
vain.
Actually,
part
of
her
couldn’t
wait.
This
Saturday,
the
great
Catherine
Spears,
famous
pianist,
would
perform
at
the
concert
hall
in
the
town.
For
four
years,
Elsa
had
listened
to
Ms.
Spears’s
recordings
over
and
over
again
loving
the
way
the
notes
tumbled
like
a
rushing
mountain
stream.
But
part
of
Elsa
was
terrified.
Her
music
teacher
at
school,
Mr.
Leaf,
had
asked
Elsa
to
present
the
flowers
to
Ms.
Spears
after
the
performance.
Why
did
he
choose
her?
Elsa
hated
talking
in
front
of
people.
Each
night,
Elsa
dreamed
about
music,
spotlights,
and
shining
grand
piano.
Sometimes
she
forgot
the
words
and
Ms.
Spears
rushed
offstage
before
Elsa
could
say
anything!
Other
times
she
tripped
and
lay
prone
on
the
floor.
Despite
all
these
terrible
dreams,
Elsa
kept
practising.
“Beautiful
flowers
for
a
beautiful
performance...”
Then,
finally,
the
big
day
came.
As
the
lights
dimmed,
Ms.
Spears
walked
onto
the
stage
wearing
a
black
gown.
Smiling,
she
bowed,
made
her
graceful
way
to
the
piano,
took
her
seat
and
then
began
to
play.
Her
fingers
danced
across
the
keys.
She
swayed
and
nodded
with
her
shiny
black
ponytail
bobbing.
Back
and
forth
she
raced
her
feet
among
the
pedals.
Drawn
to
the
music,
Elsa
forgot
her
anxiety.
Suddenly,
a
burst
of
thunderous
applause
brought
Elsa
back
to
reality.
The
frightening
moment
was
almost
there.
