相传2500年前，居住在爱尔兰的塞尔特人相信在这新旧年交接的夜晚，死亡之神Samhain会带着看不见的灵魂重返人间，找寻替身后得以重生，因此他们点燃火炬，焚烧动物以作为给死亡之神的献礼，而族中的祭师也会主持祭典，利用动物的头或皮毛打扮成鬼怪的模样，口中并发出可怕的声音，这就是化妆舞会的由来。
但如今的欧美上流社会却开始时兴在公司年会或大型庆功会、时尚派对上安排化妆舞会。人们觉得这种化妆舞会高雅，乐趣无穷。
