Next month,I’m traveling to a remote area of Central Africa and my aim is to know enough Lingala --- one of the local languages ---to have a conversation.I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage this---until I discovered a way to learn all the vocabulary I’m going to need. Thanks to Memrise, the app I’m using. It feels just like a game.
“People often stop learning things because they feel they’re not making progress or because it all feels like too much hard work,” says Ed Cooke, one of the people who created Memrise. “We’re trying to create a form of learning experience that is fun and is something you’d want to do instead of watching TV.”
Memrise gives you a few new words to learn and these are “seeds” which you plant in your “greenhouse”. When you practice the words, you “water your plants”. When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your “garden”. And if you forget to log on, the app sends you emails that remind you to “water your plants”.
The app uses two principles about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they link them to a picture in their mind. Memrise translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use “mems”. For example, I memorized motele, the Lingala word for “engine”, using a mem I created ---I imagined an old engine in a motel room.
The second principle is that we need to stop after studying words and then repeat them again later, leaving time between study periods. Memrise helps you with this, because it’s the kind of app you only use for five or ten minutes a day.
I’ve learnt hundreds of Lingala words with Memrise. I know this won’t make me a fluent speaker, but I hope I’ll be able to do more than just smile when I meet people in Congo. Now, I need to go and water my vocabulary!
24. What does Ed Cooke make an effort to do with Memrise?
A. Create memorable experiences. B. Make progress with hard work.
C. Learn languages with pleasure. D. Master languages through games.
25. What do the underlined words “water your plants” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Logging on to the app. B. Being a Memrise user.
C. Taking care of your garden. D. Learning new words.
26. How does Memrise work?
A. By linking different mems together. B. By putting knowledge into practice.
C. By offering human translation services. D. By using a linked memory way.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards Memrise?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Negative.

Taking a break during the workday is important but how often do we actually make the time to do it?For most, an eight-hour workday just doesn't seem like enough and we end up sacrificing moments of peace to make room for more moments of productivity, but according to a new study, skipping that lunch break could actually be hurting our performance.
Amazing as it may seem, taking time away from work to enjoy a short walk or a few minutes of mindful thought throughout the day can actually have positive effects on your end of day concentration and help you feel less tired after you are off work.
Scientists tasked workers in intellectually (智力上地) demanding fields-education, engineering and finance-with taking a short 15-minute walk or doing 15 minutes of mindful thinking during their lunch breaks every day for two weeks. The participants were asked to report how they were feeling near the end of the day during, before and after the study. They also filled out a short questionnaire every night, asking how much they enjoyed their lunch break. The results:those who took a break to walk or mindfully relax were significantly less stressed and able to perform better at the end of the workday than those who took no breaks. Mindful relaxation in particular helped people feel less anxious at the end of the day.
According to the study, walk in nature can lead to "attention restoration"—recovery from cognitive(认知的)overload after focus and mindful relaxation can increase our positive feelings, relieve stress and start focus.
So the next time you think you should skip your lunch break to get that big project done, take a breath and consider giving yourself a moment of peace. It might just make you a more productive employee.
28. What phenomenon is mainly described in the first paragraph?
A. Better performance on jobs. B.Overwork for productivity.
C. Inappropriate working ways. D. Peaceful work environment.
29. What may make people more relaxed after work?
A .Their timely relaxation. B. Their good food for lunch.
C. Their walk with their colleagues. D. Their whole devotion.
30. Why did the scientists test the workers?
A. To check their physical health.
B. To see how long they relax daily.
C. To see the effect of lunch break.
D. To check if they live an active life.
31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell how to perform better.
B. To show the importance of attention.
C. To introduce the life of employees.
D. To advise people to take a lunch break during work.

Scientists in Britain have managed to teach bees to pull strings to get food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their group--- showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains.
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes and birds, showed for the first time that some insects are up to the task, and can also pass skills on through several generations.
The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread” --- the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills --- may not be exclusive to humans.
In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet.
The strings were attached to discs --- or artificial “flowers” --- containing food at their center but placed under a transparent(透明的) screen. The bees, spotting the food under the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.
From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful.
Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in groups, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the group’s worker bees.
Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees’ learning and teaching skills.
32. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 3?
A. adaptable. B. beneficial. C. unique. D. comparable.
33. What did the researchers find about bees?
A. Bees can be trained to gain skills. B. Bees can pass on food to others.
C. Bees are the most capable insects. D. Bees are born good learners.
34. What may the research team focus on next?
A. What else bees can do. B. Why bees learn skills.
C. How bees teach others. D. How bees’ brains work.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Small bees, great abilities. B. A good learner and teacher—bee.
C. As clever as a bee. D. Learning never tires bees.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选岀可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The power of humor and laughter is numerous. They entertain us and make us feel good. But, above all, we have discovered that humor and laughter are the best medicine. 36 .
They are extremely necessary for helping us to find and keep a balance between life and work. However, they are slipping away from us. We have become far too serious. The only ones who still enjoy humor, laughter, fun and play to the fullest are young children. Children tend to laugh an average of 200 times a day.37 . In the 1950s people laughed on average 18 times a day. Today, we are lucky if we average between 4﹣6 times a day.
As a matter of fact, a recent study found that people laugh 6 more times in the presence of one person but 30more times in a group of people.38 . However, it is not the same as belly jiggling laughter (a deep laugh) you get when you interact with others.
39 . However, this is no longer the case. In fact, the majority of people can hardly find time, nor are they willing to socialize outside home. They turn to electronic media such as television, computers, the Internet, videos, CDs, and audio equipment, which can provide them with instant self﹣entertainment at the push of a button.
The workplace does not progress much better due to the pressures to produce more in the same or fewer hours available and to compete, for example, in a manufacturing field (制造业) with cheaper labor elsewhere in the world. 40 .
I have developed a real appreciation, perhaps closer to a strong desire for the power of humor and laughter. This encouraged me to write my first book titled “The Power of Humor” and subsequently my second book titled “Kids Say the Goggonest Things” based on the natural humor, laughter, play and fun that kids experience and they freely share with parents, grandparents and teachers.
A. Laughter creates a friendly atmosphere in relationships between people.
B. Socializing with friends and relatives was much looked forward to.
C. Humor and laughter in the workplace have gradually worn away.
D. You can get a chuckle(咯咯笑)from jokes you get on the Internet.
E. They relieve pain, reduce stress and anxiety, prevent aging and promote a long life.
F. From writing about humor and laughter, people start to ask me to speak up for them.
G. For adults, however, it is a totally different story.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Two things changed my life: my mother and a white plastic bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it and it's true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn't turned a silly bicycle basket into a life lesson I carry with me today.
Managing the family budget(预算)must have been a very hard task, but my mother made it look easy. If we complained about not having what another kid did, we'd hear something like, "I don't care what so-and-so got for his birthday; you are not getting a TV in your room, a car for your birthday or an expensive birthday party. "We had to earn our pocket money by doing the housework. I can still remember how long it took to shine(擦亮)the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We made our own beds(no one left the house until that was done). We had to keep track of our belongings(物品),and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was summer and, one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated(装饰)with flowers, the basket winked(眨眼)at me and I knew—I knew—I had to have it.
"It's beautiful," my mother said when I pointed it out to her. "What a nice basket."
I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn't stand it any longer: "Mom, please can I please, please get it? I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say. I'll do anything, but I need that basket. I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please?"
"You know, "she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at(注视)what I believed was the coolest thing ever," If you save up you could buy this yourself."
"By the time I make enough it'll be gone!"
"Maybe Roger here could hold it for you," she smiled at Roger, the bike store Owner.
"He can't hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?"
"There might be another way," she said.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【参考答案】 And so our paying plan began. My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding Fe I couldn't find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing savings increased by extra work here and there: washing the car, helping my mother make dinner, delivering or collecting things on my bike that already looked naked without the basket in front. And then, weeks later, I counted, re-counted and jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amount we'd agreed upon……
Days later, a neighborhood girl appeared with the exact same basket fixed to her shiny, new bike. I rode hard and fast home to tell my mother about this disaster. This horrible turn of events. And then came the lesson I've taken with me through my life: "Honey, your basket is extra-special," Mom said, gently wiping away my hot tears. "Your basket is special because you paid for it yourself."

Text 1
W: Are you ready to order now, sir?
M: Yes, please. I’ll have Cola for both number 3 sets.
W: OK, the total is $17. 25 with tax. For here or to go?
M: For here.
Text 2
W: Hi, Jason! I haven’t seen you for ages. How’s your work going?
M: Can’t complain, but because of the outbreak, I have been working from home for two months.
W: Yeah, I can’t believe how serious the coronavirus problem is!
Text 3
W: Tim, could you change my flight reservation for me? I’ve got an appointment at 3: 00 tomorrow afternoon so I have to leave after that.
M: What about the 5: 15 flight so you’ll get in at 7: 30?
W: Thanks. That sounds great.
Text 4
M: I’m now wearing the same shirt I bought three years ago.
W: You’re definitely not a victim of fast fashion. Many people keep buying new clothes and only wear them a few times before buying more clothes.
M: I see. My sister does that and I often tell her it’s not helpful if she wants to save money.
Text 5
W: Hey! You look worried. Anything troubling you?
M: I’m in the 400-meter relay race. It’s in two hours and I’m really nervous.
W: Come on! No need to worry! You’ve been practicing hard and I’m sure you’ll win if you just focus.
Text 6
W: We’ve finally arrived at the Shanghai Disneyland Resort! It’s the sixth in the world and the first in mainland China. Look at the map! We are on the Mickey Street and have you seen the castle over there? Let’s go to “Pirates of the Caribbean” first!
M: I don’t want to go on that ride.
W: Not scared, are you?
M: The line is too long and it would take two hours just to get to the front. In two hours we could enjoy many other things. And the gift shop is also crowded.
W: OK, I guess you are right. It’s better we see as many sites as possible.
Text 7
W: I followed a few Internet influencers on Sina Weibo and Li Ziqi is one of them. She has just uploaded another video. Would you like to take a look?
M: Internet influencers? You mean those pretty young ladies who are often trying to sell something at the end of the video? Honestly, I’m not that interested.
W: Come on, I know the phrase “Internet influencer” sometimes has a negative meaning, but I believe you will change your mind after watching her videos and know her story.
M: OK, tell me more about her.
W: She was born in 1990 and blew up in 2017 and gained international attraction in 2019. Up to now she has had over 7 million followers on YouTube and more than 25 million on Sina Weibo.
M: Wow, that’s quite something. She must have done something extraordinary.
W: You bet. She is known for creating food and handicraft preparation videos in her hometown of rural Sichuan. She strictly follows the traditional steps and procedures in creating, often from basic ingredients and with tools using traditional Chinese techniques. Besides, she performs the work of a farmer with the grace of a fairy.
M: Sounds interesting. So what is her latest video about?
W: It’s called Turning a Soybean Seed into a Drop of Soy Sauce.
M: I can’t wait to see it.
Text 8
W: Oh, not again. It’s already 9: 00 in the morning. How could you still be asleep? Don’t you see the rubbish needs taking out, the flowers need watering and the dog...
M: I’m always so tired after working all week. I just need to get some shut-eye.
W: But you used to go jogging in the park during weekends and you told me exercise can help ease tiredness, and that sleeping too much is not a healthy lifestyle.
M: I know. That makes sense. Maybe I need a change.
W: Good. Why don’t you join me in the bakery class every Sunday? I’ve been taking it for two months and it’s really useful.
M: When will we leave home for that class?
W: It starts at 10: 00 so I always leave home at 9: 30.
M: 9: 30? You mean you were not home at that time? How come I didn’t know that?
W: Yes. Because you are always sleeping and I come back home before you wake up.
M: Emm, 9: 30? I think I will pass. Honey, I’m a little hungry and when you come back, can you make an apple pie for me for lunch? You made one last week and I wondered where you got the recipe. Now I’ve got the answer. By the way, you’re gonna be late for the bakery class.

M: Alice, as a new host, the first rule I need you to know is that no mobile phones are allowed in the studio. We can’t have them ringing when we’re broadcasting. I’m afraid you have to keep it switched off the whole day.
W: But I’m expecting an important call from my father and how can I check the latest football scores and I want to send a text to Dan and...
M: Alice, are you OK? You’re sweating and I think you’ve got NOMOPHOBIA!
W: What is that? Oh, I’ll look it up on my phone.
M: Sorry, no phones, Alice. But I can tell you that nomophobia is the fear of not having or not being able to use your mobile phone. I mean you’ve got smart phone addiction.
W: I guess you are right. I’m feeling quite anxious even when I am at the cinema, when my phone has to be switched off. What can I do?
M: Relax, it’s no big deal. You can start doing small things every day in order to break the habit. I think the first thing you can do is to turn off your phone before your bedtime. Nomophobia never sleeps and neither will you.
W: Yeah, no wonder I always feel tired. But what should I do during day time?
M: Instead of holding it in your hand and checking it every few minutes, the next thing is to set a certain time to check your phone, which is also helpful for you to concentrate on your work. And last, try to spend real time with your family and friends rather than connecting with them over social media.
W: Your suggestions are really helpful. I feel much better now.
M: Good, switch off your phone and take a deep breath. Let’s finish today’s broadcast and enjoy the time without being distracted by your phone.
