B
Both
my
parents
came
from
towns
in
Mexico.
I
was
born
in
El
Paso,
Texas,
and
when
I
was
four,
my
family
moved
to
a
housing
project
in
East
Los
Angeles.
Even
though
we
struggled
to
make
ends
meet,
my
parents
stressed
to
me
and
my
four
brothers
and
sisters
how
fortunate
we
were
to
live
in
a
great
country
with
limitless
opportunities.
They
taught
us
the
concepts
of
family
and
faith.
I
got
my
first
real
job
when
I
was
ten.
My
dad
injured
his
back
working
in
a
cardboard-box
factory
and
was
retrained
as
a
hairstylist.
He
rented
space
in
a
little
shopping
mall
and
gave
his
shop
the
fancy
name
of
Mr.
Ben's
Coiffure.
The
owner
of
the
shopping
center
gave
Dad
a
discount
on
his
rent
for
cleaning
the
parking
lot
three
nights
a
week,
which
meant
getting
up
at
3
a.
m.
To
pick
up
trash,
Dad
used
a
little
machine
that
looked
like
a
lawn
mower.
Mom
and
I
emptied
garbage
cans
and
picked
up
litter
by
hand.
It
took
two
to
three
hours
to
clean
the
lot.
I'd
sleep
in
the
car
on
the
way
home.
I
did
this
for
two
years,
but
the
lessons
I
learned
have
lasted
a
lifetime.
I
acquired
discipline
and
a
strong
work
ethic(道德),
and
learned
at
an
early
age
the
importance
of
balancing
life-in
my
case,
school
and
a
job.
This
really
helped
during
my
senior
year
of
a
high
school,
when
I
worked
40
hours
a
week
making
burgers
at
a
fast-food
joint
while
taking
a
full
load
of
college
preparation
courses.
The
hard
work
paid
off.
I
attended
the
U.
S.
Military
Academy
and
went
on
to
receive
graduate
degrees
in
law
and
business
from
Harvard.
Later,
I
joined
big
Los
Angeles
law
firm
and
was
elected
to
the
California
state
assembly(议会).
In
these
jobs
and
in
everything
else
I've
done,
I
have
never
forgotten
those
nights
in
the
parking
lot.
The
experience
taught
me
that
there
is
dignity
in
all
work
and
that
if
people
are
working
to
provide
for
themselves
and
their
families,
that
is
something
we
should
honor.

cleaner.

the
author
benefit
from
the
two
years’
work?

He
developed
communicative

two
things
at
a
time.

earned
enough
money
for
college
education.
D.
He
realized
the
significance
of
school
discipline.
27.
What
did
the
author
intend
to
tell
us?
A.
All
work
was
important.
B.
Life
was
full
of
ups
and
downs.
C.
How
successful
he
was
in
his
life.
D.
What
family
and
belief
meant
to
an

C
The
practice
of
students
endlessly
copying
letters
and
sentences
from
a
blackboard
is
a
thing
of
the
past.
With
the
coming
of
new
technologies
like
computers
and
smartphones,
writing
by
hand
has
become
something
of
nostalgic
(怀旧的)
skill.
However,
while
today’s
educators
are
using
more
and
more
technology
in
their
teaching,
many
believe
basic
handwriting
skills
are
still
necessary
for
students
to
be
successful

both
in
school
and
in
life.
Virginia
Berninger,
professor
of
educational
psychology
at
the
University
of
Washington,
says
it’s
important
to
continue
teaching
handwriting
and
help
children
acquire
the
skill
of
writing
by
hand.
Berninger
and
her
colleagues
conducted
a
study
that
looked
at
the
ability
of
students
to
complete
various
writing
tasks

both
on
a
computer
and
by
hand.
The
study
found
that
when
writing
with
a
pen
and
paper,
participants
wrote
longer
essays
and
more
complete
sentences
and
had
a
faster
word
production
rate.
In
a
more
recent
study,
Berninger
looked
at
what
role
spelling
plays
in
a
student’s
writing
skills
and
found
that
how
well
children
spell
is
tied
to
how
well
they
can
write.
“Spelling
makes
some
of
the
thinking
parts
of
the
brain
active
which
helps
us
access
our
vocabulary,
word
meaning
and
concepts.
It
is
allowing
our
written
language
to
connect
with
ideas.”
Berninger
said.
Spelling
helps
students
translate
ideas
into
words
in
their
mind
first
and
then
to
transcribe(转换)
“those
words
in
the
mind
written
symbols
on
paper
or
keyboard
and
screen,”
the
study
said.
Seeing
the
words
in
the
“mind’s
eye”
helps
children
not
only
to
turn
their
ideas
into
words,
says
Berninger,
but
also
to
spot(发现)
spelling
mistakes
when
they
write
the
words
down
and
to
correct
them
over
time.
“In
our
computer
age,
some
people
believe
that
we
don’t
have
to
teach
spelling
because
we
have
spell
checks,”
she
said.
“But
until
a
child
has
a
functional
spelling
ability
of
about
a
fifth
grade
level,
they
won’t
have
the
knowledge
to
choose
the
correct
spelling
among
the
options
given
by
the
computer.”
28.
What
makes
writing
by
hand
a
thing
of
the
past?
A.
The
absence
of
blackboard
in
classroom.
B.
The
use
of
new
technologies
in
teaching.
C.
The
lack
of
practice
in
handwriting.
D.
The
popular
use
of
smartphones.
29.
Which
of
the
following
best
shows
the
role
of
spelling?
A.
Spelling
improves
one’s
memory
of
words.
B.
Spelling
ability
is
closely
related
to
writing
ability.
C.
Spelling
benefits
the
translation
from
words
into
ideas.
D.
Spelling
slows
down
finding
exact
words
to
express
ideas.
30.
What
does
“mind’s
eye”
in
paragraph
5
mean?
A.
Window.
B.
Soul.
C.
Picture.
D.
Imagination.
31.
What
conclusion
could
be
drawn
from
the
passage?
A.
Computers
can
help
people
with
their
choice
of
words.
B.
Spell
checks
can
take
the
place
of
spelling
teaching.
C.
Handwriting
still
has
a
place
in
today’s
classrooms.
D.
Functional
spelling
ability
develops
fast
in
the
fifth
grade.
D
Parents
and
educators
can
teach
kids
to
change
their
fixed
mindsets
and
see
more
potential
in
themselves
and
other
people.
Do
you
agree
with
this
statement?
If
your
answer
is
yes,
here’s
something
you
might
consider.
Research
suggests
that
believing
in
the
human
ability
to
change
is
linked
to
less
depression,
better
health
and
greater
achievement.
This
is
the
“growth
mindset”,
an
idea
pioneered
by
Stanford
researcher
Carol
Dweck.
According
to
this
research,
when
we
practice
a
growth
mindset,
the
difficulties
we’re
facing
seem
more
likely
to
be
surmounted.
It’s
important
for
us
to
realize
we
aren’t
helpless;
we
can
grow
and
adapt.
Just
as
important
as
seeing
ourselves
as
capable
of
growth,
this
reduces
some
of
the
pressure
we
might
feel,
and
helps
us
think
more
in
terms
of
challenges
than
threats.
According
to
studies,
developing
a
growth
mindset
is
of
importance.
For
example,
a
simple
belief
in
the
possibility
of
change
may
have
a
powerful
effect
on
our
thinking—potentially
freeing
us
to
actually
see
our
way
through
anxiety
and
a
sense
of
failure
among
peer
conflicts
and
peer
exclusion(排除,驱逐).
Research
also
indicates
that
believing
personalities
can
change
can
lower
aggression
and
better
navigate
social
relationships.
Additionally,
if
we
believe
personalities
are
changeable
and
that
situation
can
change,
we
can
also
apply
this
thinking
to
groups,
resulting
in
an
increased
cooperation.
A
growth
mindset
isn’t
a
personal
state
of
being;
instead,
it’s
a
way
of
thinking
or
a
strategy
we
can
apply
in
a
given
situation.
It
isn’t
something
you
simply
have
or
you
don’t.
However,
sometimes
it’s
really
challenging
to
access
a
growth
mindset.
Something
like
feeling
threatened,
compared
or
criticized
can
make
us
feel
unsafe
so
that
it
can
be
difficult
to
believe
in
the
ability
for
change.
Fortunately,
there’s
always
something
you
can
do
to
develop
a
growth
mindset.
According
to
Carol
Dweck,
a
growth
mindset
is
the
belief
that
our
abilities
A.
are
stable
B.
aren’t
fixed
C.
are
for
growth
D.
are
linked
to
health
33.
What
does
the
underlined
word
“surmounted”
in
paragraph
2
probably
mean?
A.
overcome
B.
strengthened
C.
predicted
D.
approved
34.
According
to
studies,
people
with
growth
mindsets
are
more
likely
to________.
A.
behave
more
bravely
B.
be
strict
with
themselves
C.
do
something
on
their
own
D.
get
along
better
with
others
35.
What
can
we
infer
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.
A
growth
mindset
is
difficult
to
develop.
B.
People
with
growth
mindsets
will
not
be
criticized.
C.
The
sense
of
insecurity
can
be
a
barrier
to
a
growth
mindset.
D.
Growth
mindsets
are
challenging
if
people
don't
have
good
states.

The

needs
to
make
sure
that
private

follow
the
required

If
the
state
does
not
control
what
young

then
who

they
could
be

in
private
schools.
But
there
is
no
need
to
worry
about
homeschooling
for
few
parents

that.
And
China
has
done
good
jobs
in
guaranteeing
the

in
private

As

Private

It
is

they

A

one
day
heard
that
one
of
their
sons
had
beaten
a
child,
Lucas,
on
the
playground
of
the
garden.
They
thought
it
must
have
certainly
been
done
by
their
naughty
Caspar,
but
they
didn't
ask
him
directly,
because
they
feared
that
he
would
deny
it
if
they
put
the
question
to
him.
But
the
father
had
an
idea.
They
soon
went
to
the
supper
table,
and
Caspar
was
very
still
and
quiet.
He
ate
little,
and
spoke
still
less.
He
seldom
looked
at
his
parents,
who
were
very
serious,
and
then
only
with
stolen
glances.
About
half
an
hour
later,
the
sons
were
gone
to
sleep.
They
all
slept
in
separate
beds,
but
in
the
same
room.
Their
father
entered
the
room,
and
took
pains
to
make
a
great
noise
in
shutting
the
door.
Caspar
instantly
sprang
out
of
bed,
and
full
of
fear
cried
out,
"What
is
it?
What
is
the
matter?"
"Nothing,"
answered
the
father,
"I
was
only
wishing
to
see
who
among
you
was
asleep.”
The
two
other
brothers
were
sleeping
softly
and
sweetly,
and
did
not
awake
until
they
heard
Caspar’s
cry.
The
father
then
went
out
.
The
next
day
the
father
called
Caspar
to
him,
and,
before
his
mother
and
all
the
children,
said
to
him,
"You
beat
a
poor
child
yesterday,
did
you?"
Caspar,
who
thought
that
it
had
all
come
out,
began
to
excuse
himself,
"He
struck
me
too,
and.
"
His
father
stopped
him.
"Caspar!"
said
he,
"Yesterday,
we
heard
that

of

your

as
soon
as
I

I

that
you

You

you

续写
Caspar
acknowledged
his
fault,
and
promised
to
do
everything
that
his
father
ordered
him.
The
next
day
was
Sunday.
Caspar
went
to
the
garden
where
kids
played.
After
about
half
an
hour,
Lucas
turned
up.
Caspar
gathered
his
courage
and
went
up
to
him.
However,
Lucas
was
still
alarmed,
stepping
backward
a
little.
Handing
out
a
bar
of
chocolate
to
Lucas,
Caspar
said,
“Sorry,would
you
excuse
me
for
my
rudeness
the
other
day?”
Lucas,
rooted
to
the
spot,
blinked
and
raised
his
head
to
look
at
Caspar
doubtfully.
"We
shall
be
friends.
Come
and
play
basketball
with
me?"
Caspar
inquired
with
hesitation.
A
smile
appeared
on
Lucas'
face,
a
little
bit
at
first,
and
then
bigger
and
bigger.
Taking
over
the
chocolate,
as
if
it
were
an
apology
note,
Lucas
was
so
moved
that
he
felt
a
lump
in
his
throat.
Instantly,he
happily
ran
to
the
playground
with
Caspar.
The
two
guys
played
basketball
crazily
for
two
hours.
Then
Caspar
sincerely
invited
his
new
friend
to
his
home,
introduced
Lucas
to
his
families
and
told
them
how
skilfully
Lucas
played
basketball.
Caspar's
parents
were
really
relieved
to
see
their
elder
son
had
made
up
for
his
mistakes.
Thanks
to
this
unforgettable
experience,
Caspar
became
mature
and
learnt
to
get
on
with
his
peers.
