Let me explain a bit by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humour, but sadly reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day curled up with a book but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and documents for work, but not books. I think that sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax. Giving yourself a goal or a challenge is a good way to change a habit or achieve something, so why not try to create a new habit of reading?
I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits from reading, which screen-based activities (games, films, TV) don’t have.
One thing I personally love about reading is being transported to another world. I often forget the time or things that are going on around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better. While watching a film, I often talk to my flatmates, send texts, or paint my nails. A book, on the other hand, commands your full attention.
Reading gives you the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions, With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else’s head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you’re waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading.
4. What can we learn about the author’s father?
A. He is kind-hearted B. He lacks humor.
C. He has a gift for singing. D. He doesn’t like reading
5. Why is the author fond of reading?
A. Because she bears too much pressure.
B. Because it benefits her a lot.
C. Because it’s the best way to kill time.
D. Because she hates to be in front of the TV or computers.
6. What is the difference between reading and watching TV according to the author?
A. Reading needs more attention than watching TV does.
B. Watching TV makes one more relaxed than reading does.
C. Reading can widen people’s interest while watching TV can’t.
D. Watching TV brings one to a different world while reading doesn’t.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Reading helps to relax. B. Is reading really challenging?
C. The 15 minutes reading challenge. D. The gap between my father and me.

Huge areas of the Amazon, which serves as the lungs of the planet by taking in carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, are burning. Smoke from the widespread fires have turned day into night in Sao Paulo. The fires have covered the Brazilian city of San Paulo in dark smoke, and raising concerns that the rainforest, which is one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth.
The recent Amazon fires have been widespread and some happened rather suddenly. Farmers cleared land for agriculture and also burned areas of rainforest for further development. Cleared rainforests in this region are typically used for cattle farming and growing soybeans, and much of the land-clearing is done illegally. One contributing factor to the fires in the Amazon is the fact that it is the dry season there, the time of year when wildfires tend to break out from human activities, either intentionally or by accident.
The Amazon, which spans 2.12 million square miles, sucks up about a quarter of the 2.4 billion metric 57 tons of carbon that global forests absorb each year. However, the ability of the rainforest to pull in more carbon than it releases is diminishing weakened by changing weather patterns, deforestation and increasing tree mortality(死亡率), among other factors.
According to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, the fires have led to a clear increase in carbon monoxide- emissions as well as planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions, posing a threat to human health and aggravating global warming.
If the Amazon were to turn into a consistent net source of carbon emissions, it would accelerate global warming while also leading to a huge loss in species that are not found anywhere else on earth.
8.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The introduction of the Amazon fires B.The seriousness of the Amazon fires

11.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Amazon: Where have all the trees gone?
B.Cutting trees should be prohibited in Amazon
C.Why are trees so important in Amazon
D.Amazon fires could accelerate global warming and causing lasting harm to us

Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of touch. They hope their invention will give people with prosthetic hands(假肢)the ability to identify different objects.
The skin device measures 1 square centimeter. The system contains 100 small sensors that attempt to recreate things like texture(质地),temperature and even pain. The researchers call the device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin(ACES),which can process information faster than the human’s nervous system. Machine learning methods trained the device to recognize 20 to 30 different textures. It can even correctly read Braille letters(布莱叶盲文)most of the time.
The system does not require the users’ movement to work. They just need to slide to feel texture. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch,is able to detect textures of different roughness.
A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between a soft ball and a solid plastic one. “When you lose your sense of touch, you essentially become numb and prosthetic users face that problem,”said Benjamin Tee,leader of the research team. “So by recreating an artificial version of the skin for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that it is soft. ”
Tee said his idea for the device came from the movie Star Wars, when character Luke Skywalker loses his right hand and it is replaced with a robotic one. In the film, the new hand is able to experience touch sensations just like the real one.
The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community. Tee said similar inventions that his team has developed include see-through skin that can repair itself when torn and a material for wearable electronic devices that gives off light.
12.What can we learn about the artificial skin in Paragraph 2?
A.It is sensitive to high temperature. B.It reacts faster than our nervous system.
C.It can recognize different objects. D.It helps the users memorize Braille letters.
13.What can be inferred from Benjamin Tee’s words?
A.The artificial skin feels like a real thing.
B.People with the artificial skin feel warm.
C.People don’t want to lose the sense of touch.
D.He is sympathetic towards the prosthetic users.
14.What inspired Benjamin Tee to create the artificial skin?
A.The desire to help those in need. B.The life of the disabled.
C.A dream of earning more money. D.A scene from a famous movie.
15.Which word can best describe the artificial skin technology?
A.Profitable. B.Stable. C.Promising. D.Challenging.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The world has a water problem which is simple to understand but not to solve. The amount of water in the world is limited. Water usage in the world has increased during the past 10 years. Usages will continue to increase as the population grows and uses more water. A third of the world’s population lives in countries that have too little water. 16
It’s strange to think that there is more than enough water available for everyone’s basic needs. 17 Some countries are much drier than others, for example Sudan in Africa. The UN says that people need a minimum of 50 litres of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking and sanitation (卫生). In 1990, over a billion people did not have even that. Water shortages can mean long walks to get water, high prices to buy it, food insecurity and disease from drinking dirty water. 18
Governments that try to improve water supplies need to think carefully about how to do this. 19 But in many cases, the environment and the habitats of plants and animals are threatened by the dams as a result.
20 New technology can help, especially by cleaning up pollution and so making more water usable, and in agriculture, where water use can be made far more efficient. For millions of people around the world, solving the problem is a matter of life and death.
A. So what can help?
B. It’s just not spread evenly(均匀地,平衡地)throughout the world.
C. Unfortunately, it’s poor people who suffer most.
D. By 2025, scientists expect this to increase to two-thirds.
E. Dams and other large projects now provide millions with water.
F. Electricity from these dams can provide people with clean energy.
G. The rest along major rivers in the world have no worry about water.

第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, and I am writing to express my dissatisfaction about the service your website promises. There are some main reasons why I am not content with it.
Last week, I ordered a pizza in one of the shops in order to enjoy a happy time with my family. However, to my disappointment, the pizza delivery was an hour later than scheduled. What made me even more upset was that the restaurant shifted off its responsibility to (put the blame on) the delivery boy when I asked for their proper explanation. But the delivery boy said he was not the person to blame.
I know your website is a famous one, but my experience shows that your service needs improvement. Not only your web but also the restaurant should give me a reasonable explanation. I trust that you’ll take this seriously and make an effort to prevent such things from happening again.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
