牛津英语2021年中考专题--阅读理解专题
(1)
I
am
a
plastic
bottle.
A
week
ago,
I
was
on
a
supermarket
shelf.
I
had
a
normal
life,
the
same
as
all
my
brothers
and
sisters
——
other
bottles
full
of
water.
I
felt
really
happy.
Then
a
tall
woman
picked
me
up
and
put
me
in
her
basket!
The
woman
took
me
home
and
put
me
in
the
fridge.
It
was
cold,
but
I
soon
made
friends
with
the
cans
and
bottles
in
it.
However,
only
a
few
hours
later,
she
took
me
out
of
the
fridge
and
drank
the
water
inside
me.
Then
she
threw
me
into
a
dustbin.
I
have
never
felt
so
empty
and
lonely
in
my
life.
Early
the
next
morning,
a
man
took
me
out
of
a
dustbin.
He
threw
me
and
the
other
rubbish
into
the
back
of
a
truck.
There
were
so
many
bad
smells.
Then
I
was
pushed
together
with
the
rest
of
the
rubbish.
Soon
I
was
completely
flat.
I
can’t
believe
how
thin
I
became.
I
slept
for
a
while.
When
I
woke
up,
I
found
myself
in
a
terrible
place.
Everything
around
me
was
ugly
and
had
bad
smells.
I
felt
afraid.
I
kept
hoping
that
I
would
be
moved
somewhere
else.
Then
huge
trucks
came
and
covered
us
with
something.
I
asked
another
bottle
what
would
happen
to
us.
He
said
that
we
would
never
leave
this
place,
but
would
have
to
stay
here
for
thousands
of
years.
“Why
can’t
they
recycle
us?”
I
cried.

Sun
Run,
a
16-year-old
girl
went
to
the
hospital
with
her
parents
in
January
because
her
eyes
felt
more
tired
and
her
vision
was
blurry
(视力模糊的).
She
was
shocked
when
she
found
out
that
her
eyesight
dropped
from
5.0
to
4.6
in
only
a
term.
“A
few
of
my
friends
have
had
the
same
experience
lately.”
Sun
said.
In
fact,
poor
eyesight
among
Chinese
primary
and
high
school
students
rose
from
59.2
percent
to
70.6
percent
in
the
first
half
of
2020,
according
to
the
Ministry
of
Education.?
To
protect
students’
eyesight,
the
Chinese
government
has
worked
out
new
requirements
for
school
equipment(设备).They
will
take
effect
on
March
1,
2022.
For
example,
according
to
the
requirements,
the
size
of
text
in
students’
textbooks
should
be
no
smaller
than
nine-point
(小五号).
Teachers
should
also
avoid
using
projectors
(投影仪)
or
other
multimedia
equipment
that
are
too
bright.
There
are
also
requirements
for
desk
and
classroom
lights.
For
example,
these
lights
should
give
off
as
little
blue
light
as
possible.
Blue
light
is
bad
for
our
eyes,
as
it
can
kill
the
photoreceptor
cells
(感光细胞)
we
need
for
vision.
Many
of
the
electronic
devices
(电子设备)
we
use
every
day,
including
our
phones
and
computer
screens,
give
off
blue
light.
??
Chinese
government
has
also
taken
other
steps
to
protect
students’
eyesight
in
China.
In
May
2020,
the
National
Health
Commission
asked
schools
to
make
sure
that
students
have
at
least
two
hours
of
outdoor
activity
a
day.?
By
2050,
half
of
the
world’s
population
(nearly
5
billion)
will
be
nearsighted,
according
to
a
study
published
in
the
journal
Ophthalmology.
The
main
reason
for
this
is
that
people’s
lifestyles
have
changed.
They
spend
less
time
outdoors
and
more
time
looking
at
screens.?

(3)
Have
you
ever
paid
for
educational
podcasts(播客)or
live
videos?
Ask
some
people
and
most
of
them
will
say
yes.
“Pay-for-knowledge”
has
been
more
and
more
fashionable
these
years.
The
contents
of
these
“pay-for-knowledge”
products
are
from
language
learning
to
gardening
or
baby-caring.
Everything
you
think
of
can
be
found
online
at
this
moment.
“Pay-for-knowledge”
is
on
the
rise(兴起).
Why
is
“pay-for-knowledge”
industry
developing
so
rapidly?
First,
its
development
is
based
on
the
Internet.
With
a
fast
network
and
a
smartphone,
anyone
who
has
passed
the
identity(身份)
check
can
be
an
online
teacher,
and
anyone
with
an
online
account(帐户)
can
buy
“pay-for-knowledge”
products.
Second,
people
are
afraid
to
miss
any
information.
On
one
hand,
people
hope
for
more
useful
information.
On
the
other
hand,
such
information
is
usually
at
the
hands
of
experts
who
serve
famous
companies
and
universities.
Moreover,
the
need
to
learn
new
skills
in
today’s
job
market
also
pushes
people
to
learn
on
such
educational
podcasts.
The
industry
of
“pay-for-knowledge”
has
proved
to
be
lucrative.
It
promises
possibilities
of
turning
information
into
money.
It
is
good
for
the
development
of
our
country
and
it
can
help
sellers
make
lots
of
money.
Besides,
buyers
can
enjoy
self-growth
from
it.
What’s
more,
this
is
a
reflection(反映)of
respect
for
knowledge
and
talents.
However,
the
rapid
rise
of
“pay-for-knowledge”
has
a
few
problems.
For
one
thing,
the
market
is
full
of
eye-catching
words
such
as
“How
to
be
an
Industry’s
Expert
in
5
Hours”
and
“15
Classes
to
Be
a
Master
of
Appreciating(欣赏)
Classical
Music”,
which
sound
like
if
you
pay
for
it,
you
are
sure
to
succeed.
For
another,
a
large
number
of
customers
buy
them
just
for
showing
off.
In
fact,
those
who
have
really
had
self-growth
after
buying
online
courses
may
be
the
kind
of
people
who
need
them
least.
In
other
words,
with
or
without
these
courses,
they
can
make
it
anyway,
because
they
are
those
who
have
the
ability
to
learn
by
themselves.
In
general,
the
best
is
the
one
that
suits
you
most.
“Pay-for-knowledge”
may
be
used
as
a
good
start
for
self-growth.
Be
careful!
Otherwise,
your
dream
of
success
may
not
come
true.
1.
Which
of
the

of
courses.
C.
People
who
can
teach
themselves
need
“pay-for-knowledge”
products
most.
D.
People
must
learn
from
experts
who
serve
famous
companies
and
universities.
2.
Which
is
NOT
the
reason
for
“pay-for-knowledge”
industry
developing
so
rapidly?
A.
The
fast

make

possible
for
people
to
get.

to
learn

in
today’s
job
market.
D.
People
are
forced
to
pay
for
educational
podcasts
or
live
videos.
3.
What
can
we
learn
about
“pay-for-knowledge”
industry
from
Paragraph
2?
A.
The
history
of
its
rise.
B.
The
problems
of
its
products.
C.
The

of

Voting
is
one
of
the
oldest
and
most
important
civic
(公民的)
traditions
in
the
US.
There
are
three
ways
for
people
to
vote

going
to
a
polling
centre
(投票中心),
voting
by
mail
and
voting
electronically.
But
it’s
not
always
easy
to
vote,
especially
for
American
expats
(旅居国外者)
like
me
living
all
over
the
world.
We
have
to
do
it
from
far
away.
Mail–in
voting
is
one
of
the
oldest
ways
of
voting
from
far
away.
A
friend
of
mine
from
the
US
tried
to
do
it
himself.
First,
he
had
to
visit
the
US
Embassy
(大使馆)
in
Beijing
to
get
a
ballot
(选票)
application

this
is
a
form
you
fill
out
to
apply
for
a
ballot
from
your
hometown.
You
see,
every
US
voter
has
to
be
registered
(注册)
in
their
hometown
before
they
can
vote,
and
their
ballots
must
come
from
their
hometown
authorities
(当局).
In
my
friend’s
case,
he
never
received
his
ballot,
even
though
he
was
registered.
This
is
not
uncommon,
as
local
governments
in
some
parts
of
the
US
are
understaffed
(人手不足的).
With
the
election
deadline
coming
up,
it
looks
like
he
won’t
get
to
vote.
I
wanted
to
avoid
this,
so
I
tried
voting
electronically.
However,
it
turns
out
that
people
from
the
state
of
Michigan
where
my
friend
and
I
both
grew
up
aren’t
allowed
to
do
this.
In
fact,
most
US
states
do
not
allow
this
kind
of
voting.
I,
like
my
friend,
was
unable
to
vote
in
this
presidential
election.
I
hope
the
process
can
become
less
complicated
(复杂的)
for
expats
in
the
future.
1.
Which
of
the
following
is
NOT
part
of
the
voting
by
mail
process?
A.
Getting
registered.
B.
Receiving
a
ballot.
C.
Filling
out
a
ballot
application.
D.
Calling
your
hometown
authorities
on
the
phone.
2.
What
does
the
word
“deadline”
probably
mean?
A.
死亡之线
B.
截止日期
C.
生存之道
D.
延长日期
3.
Why
did
the
writer
fail
to
vote?
A.
Because
he
couldn’t
get
registered.
B.
Because
he
missed
the
voting
deadline.
C.
Because
he
didn’t
want
to
make
the
effort.
D.
Because
he
wasn’t
allowed
to
vote
electronically.
4.
What
is
this
story
mainly
about?
A.
Important
civic
traditions
in
the
US.
B.
The
oldest
ways
of
voting
in
the
US.
C.
How
to
vote
in
the
election
from
far
away.
D.
How
to
get
help
while
voting
from
far
away.
(5)
It’s
a
long-awaited
day
for
China.
The
navy
now
has
its
first
aircraft
carrier
(航空母舰),
Liaoning.
It’s
a
unique
experience
to
get
to
know
the
life
in
the
carrier.
The
carrier
is
just
like
a
small
city
on
the
sea.
It
has
all
the
functions
for
daily
life.
There
are
4
words
to
sum
up
its
characters:
big,
small,
much
and
high.
The
carrier
Liaoning
is
such
a
huge
one
that
the
total
length
of
the
whole
corridor
(过道)
could
reach
over
20
kilometers.
But
the
living
space
for
the
sailors
(水手)
is
quite
small.
That’s
because
the
carrier
is
designed
for
researching
purposes,
rather
than
comfortable
living.
Over
1,000
sailors,
both
men
and
women,
are
living
onboard
(在船上).
They
are
arranged
among
over
3,000
tiny
rooms
below
the
deck.
For
visitors,
it’s
so
easy
to
get
lost.
So
the
first
thing
the
new
sailors
have
to
learn
is
their
way
around.
The
number
of
female
sailors
is
much
less
than
that
of
the
males,
taking
about
5
percent
of
the
total.
But
they
play
a
key
role
in
carrying
out
some
special
missions
(使命).
Also,
you
will
be
surprised
by
the
high
level
of
education
of
today’s
sailors.
The
captain
said
that
over
90
percent
of
the
sailors
are
college
graduates.
Six
hold
Doctor’s
Degrees
and
45
have
a
Master’s.
The
whole
team
is
young
but
vigorous
(精力充沛的).
The
complex
(复杂的)
work
on
the
carrier
requires
high
management
abilities
for
the
commanders
onboard.
1.
Why
do
we
visitors
get
lost
easily
inside
the
carrier?
A.
Because
they
don’t
have
a
map.?????
B.
Because
the
living
space
is
quite
small.
C.
Because
there
are
too
many
corridors
for
rooms
D.
Because
the
rooms
are
too
small.
2.
The
number
of
female
sailors
is
about
_________.
A.
50
B.
150
C.
200
D.
600
3.
What
does
the
word
“high”
refer
to
(指代)?
A.
The
aircraft
carrier
is
high
since
it
is
just
like
a
small
city.
B.
Most
of
the
soldiers
received
good
education.
C.
The
expense
(花费)
to
run
a
carrier
is
high.
D.
The
high-level
of
their
training.
4.
Which
of
the
following
is
NOT
TRUE
according
to
the
passage?
A.
Liaoning
is
our
country’s
first
aircraft
carrier.
B.
Most
of
the
sailors
on
the
carrier
are
college
graduates.
C.
There
are
far
fewer
women
sailors
than
men
sailors
on
the
carrier.
D.
It
is
comfortable
for
the
sailors
to
live
in
the
carrier.

Bees
have
very
small
brains.
Still,
they
are
very
intelligent.
Scientists
at
Queen
Mary
University
of
London
did
an
experiment
with
bees.
It
shows
that
bees
can
learn
something
new
to
gain
a
reward.
Then
they
can
teach
other
bees
to
do
the
same.
And
that’s
not
all
they
can
do.
Olli
Loukola
was
one
of
the
scientists
who
worked
on
the
study.
He
said
that
the
bees
did
not
just
copy
what
they
saw.
They
actually
improved
on
what
they
were
learning.
“This
is
of
course
amazing
for
small-brained
insects,”
he
said.
He
added
that
it
is
even
harder
for
humans
to
improve
on
something
they
learned
by
copying
others.
For
the
experiment,
the
bees
had
to
move
a
yellow
ball
into
the
center
of
a
platform
(平台).
First,
the
scientists
showed
the
bees
how
to
do
it.
When
the
ball
got
to
the
center,
the
scientists
added
sugar
water
to
reward
the
subjects.
The
bees
learned
that
the
rewards
came
when
the
ball
was
put
in
the
right
place.
They
got
better
and
better
at
moving
the
balls.
Then,
they
got
more
of
the
reward.
After
a
while,
they
began
to
move
the
balls
by
themselves.
Then
scientists
tried
something
else.
They
put
the
trained
bees
on
a
platform
with
bees
that
were
not
trained.
After
watching
the
trained
bees
once,
the
untrained
bees
learned
how
to
do
it
too.
They
didn’t
just
copy
the
behavior,
though.
The
new
bees
also
improved
on
the
action.
They
chose
balls
closer
to
themselves.
All
brains-in

The
neurons

Scientist
Reese
Halter
says
bees
are

highly
intelligent
creatures,
even
though
they
have
far
fewer

than
humans.
Halter
explained
that
bees
talk
to
each
other
with
their
bodies,
but
not
like
we
do.
They
use
their
bodies
instead
of
words.
They

and
they
even
dance.
Loukola

But
this
study
proves
that
is
not
true.

Teachers

She

At

she

some

But
after

they

One
morning,
as
Mary
was
skipping(蹦跳)slowly
along
the
long
path,
she
heard
the
sound
of
music.
She
was
very
curious
and
went
to

out.
A
boy

sitting
under
a
tree.
He
was
playing
music.
He
had
blue

red

A
squirrel
and
two
rabbits
were
watching
him
and
listening
to
the
music.
When
he
saw
Mary,
he
said,
"I'm
Dickon.
I
know
who
you
are.
You
are
Miss
Mary.
"
He
took
out
a
package
"Here
are
the
garden
tools.
I
bought
some
packets
of
seeds,
too.
"
"If
you
like,"
Dickon
said
"I
can
plant
them
for
you.
Where's
your
garden?"
"Can
you
keep
a
secret?
"
she
said
"I
keep
secrets
all
the
time,"
Dickon
laughed.
"I
stole
a
garden,"
Mary
said
quickly.
"Nobody
wants
it.
Perhaps
everything
is
dead
in
it
already.
I
don't
know.
"
She
began
to
cry.
"Where
is
it?"
asked
Dickon.
"Come
with
me,"
she
said.
She
book
him
along
the
path
to
the
wall
with
the
ivy
(常春藤)
on
it.
Then
she
unlocked
the
door
and
they
went
in
together.
"Here
it
is,"
she
said.
"It's
a
secret
garden."
Diction's
blue
eyes
opened
wide
in
surprise
as
he
looked
at
the
garden."
"It's
very
pretty,"
he
whispered.
"It's
like
being
in
a
dream.
In
the
spring
there
are
going
to
be
lots
of
birds'
nests
(鸟巢)
here."
"Are
the
roses
alive
or
dead?"
Mary
asked
him.
He
went
up
to
an
old
tree
and
pointed
at
the
branch
(树枝).
It
was
dry
and
grey
but
there,
was
a
small
green
bit
on
it."
"This
bit's
alive,"
he
explained.
"But
there's
a
lot
of
old
wood
that
is
dead.
We
must
cut
it
oft.
There
are
going
to
be
lots
of
roses
here
this
summer."
They
went
from
bush
to
bush
and
from
tree
to
tree.
He
was
very
strong
and
clever
with
his
knife.
He
knew
how
to
cut
off
the
dry
and
dead
wood."
"There's
a
lot
of
work
to
do
here,"
he
said.
"Can
you
come
again
and
help
me?"
Mary
asked
him.
"Please,
Dickon!"
"Yes,
every
day
if
you
like,"
he
answered.
"Please,
please
don't
tell
anyone
about
the
secret
garden,

she
said.
"Of
course
not,"
answered
Dickon.
"It's
our
secret."

In
today’s
Internet
age,
online
games
can
be
a
change
from
pressure
of
school
and
work.
However,
they
can
also
cause
problems
and
unhealthy
addictions.
This
is
most
clearly
seen
in
the
example
of
South
Korea.
This
country
has
the
world’s
highest
percentage
of
high-speed
Internet
services.
It
also
has
a
high
number
of
game
players
who
are
addicted
to
online
games.
In
2004,
a
young
man
died
after
playing
online
games
almost
nonstop
for
86
hours.
A
12-year-old
boy
stole
$
16,000
from
his
father
to
continue
online
games
which
he
could
not
get
away
from.
Such
problems
are
spreading
to
other
parts
of
Asia
as
well.
In
2005,
it
was
reported
that
about
80
percent
of
China’s
13.8
million
online
game
players
were
under
25.
And
many
of
these
were
said
to
be
addicted.
Such
numbers
point
toward
a
growing
problem
among
Chinese
youth.
Dr.
Sue

Huei
Chen,
a
psychologist,
discovered
some
signs
of
at-risk
people.
Such
people
often
go
online
to
escape
from
their
problems.
And
they
usually
have
no
friendship
or
good
social
skills.
They
feel
the
need
to
spend
more
and
more
time
online,
so
they
may
be
absent
from
school
or
family.
And
they
become
upset
if
anyone
tries
to
limit
their
online
game
playing.

B.
many
young

Just
40

the

But
before
long,
it

The
first

of
kiasu
happened
in
1990
in
a
government

Since
then
it
has
often
been
seen
in
Singapore

It
spread
to

too.
In
1992
Malaysia's

Ten
years
after
its
first

in

the
word
was
used
worldwide.
Since
around
2000,
kias!
has
appeared
in
British

the

the

in
2007.
In
the
same

opened
in
London.
The
turning
point
on
kiasu's
road
to
the
mainstream
came
with
its
being
used
in
documents
and
newspapers.
Who
dared
to
use
kiasu
in

Who
first
used

It
was
these
people
who

Autism
(自闭症)
is
a
disorder
of
the
brain
that
happens
in
the
first
three
years
of
life.
It
affects
the
brain’s
normal
development.
Most
autistic
patients
have
difficulty
talking
with
other
people
or
doing
things.
However,
some
of
the
autistic
people
have
amazing
abilities.
For
example,
some
can
memorize
many
things
and
some
can
do
calculations
(计算)
really
fast.
Raymond
Babbitt
in
the
1988
film
Rain
Man
is
an
example.
The
character
in
the
film
was
based
on
Kim
Peek,
a
man
from
the
USA.
Peek
couldn’t
switch
on
a
light
or
put
his
clothes
on
by
himself.
But
his
memory
was
so
amazing
that
he
could
remember
almost
anything.
He
could
memorize
every
road,
place
and
distance
on
maps.
He
could
even
remember
almost
every
word
in
thousands
of
books.
His
way
of
reading
was
more
amazing.
Peek
could
read
two
pages
at
the
same
time
in
just
eight
to
ten
seconds.
He
read
the
left
page
with
his
left
eye
and
the
right
page
with
his
right
eye.
Scientists
still
don’t
know
for
sure
why
some
autistic
people
have
special
talent
after
they
have
done
a
lot
of
research.
There
is
one
possible
explanation.
When
certain
parts
of
the
brain
are
damaged
by
autism,
other
parts
of
the
brain
might
get
stronger.
Therefore,
special
abilities
were
born.
But
not
all
people
with
autism
have
amazing
abilities.
In
fact,
autistic
people
with
amazing
abilities
are
rare
and
the
abilities
cannot
be
trained.
According
to
research,
only
ten
percent
of
autistic
people
show
signs
of
special
talent.
1.
What

A.
It

C.
It
helps
people

D.

B.
He
is
a

D.
He
is
a
scientist

3.
What
makes
Kim

different
from
others?
A.
He
can
do
some
basic
things
like
dressing
himself.
B.
He
has
a
special
talent
in
calculation.
C.
He

Honesty
is
a
good
thing.
But
does
Mother
Nature
agree?
Animals
can’t
talk,
but
can
they
lie
in
other
ways?
Animal?experts?may?not?call?it?lying,?but?they?do?agree?that?many?animals,?from
birds
to
chimpanzees(黑猩猩),
behave
dishonestly
to
fool
other
animals.
Why?
Dishonesty
often
helps
them
survive.
Many?kinds?of?birds?are?very?successful?at?fooling?other?animals.?For?example,?a?bird?called
the
plover?sometimes?pretends(假装)?to?be?hurt?in?order?to?protect?its?young.?When?a
predator
(猎食动物)
gets
close
to
its
nest,
the
plover
leads
the
predator
away
from
the
nest.
How?
It
pretends
to
have
a
broken
wing.
The
predator
follows
the
“hurt”
adult,
leaving
the
baby
birds
safe
in
the
nest.
Another?kind?of?bird,?the?scrub?jay,?hides?its?food?so?it?always?has?something?to?eat.?Scrub?
jays
are?also?thieves.?They?watch?where?others?hide?their?food?and?steal?it.?But
clever
scrub
jays
seem
to
know
when
a
thief
is
watching
them.
So
they
go
back
later,
dig
the
food,
and
hide
it
again
somewhere
else.
Chimpanzees,?or?chimps,?can?also?be?sneaky.?After?a?fight,?the?losing?chimp?will?give
its
hand
to
the
other.
When
the
winning
chimp
puts
out
its
hand,
too,
the
chimps
are
friendly
again.
But
an
animal
expert
once
saw
a
losing
chimp
take
the
winner’s
hand
and
start
fighting
again.
Chimps?are?sneaky?in?other?ways,?too.When?chimps?find?food?that?they?love,?such?as?bananas,?it?is?natural?for
them?to?cry?out.?Then?other?chimps?come?running.?But
some
clever
chimps
learn
to
cry
very
softly
when
they
find
food.
That
way,
other
chimps
don’t
hear
them,
and
they
don’t
need
to
share
their
food.
As?children,?many?of?us?learn?the?saying?"You?can't?fool?Mother?Nature."?But?maybe?you
can’t
trust?her,?either.?
1.A?plover?protects?its?young?from?a?predator?by
_______________.?
A.?getting?closer?to?its?young??????????????
B.?driving?away?the?adult?predator?
C.?leaving?its?young?in?another?nest????
D.?pretending?to?be?injured?
2.By?"Chimpanzees,?or?chimps,?can?also?be?sneaky",?the?writer?means
_______________.
A.?chimps?are?ready?to?attack?others???
B.?chimps?are?sometimes?dishonest
C.?chimps?envy?the?winners??of
the
fight
D.?chimps?can?be?selfish?too
3.Which?of?the?following?is?true?according?to?the?passage??
A.?All
the
animals
survive
by
fooling
other
animals.
B.?Some?clever?scrub?jays?often?steal?their?food?back.?
C.?Some?chimps?lower?their?cry?to?keep?food?away?from?others.?
D.?The?losing?chimp?won?the?fight?by?taking?the?winner's?hand.?
4.Which?of?the?following?might?be?the?best?title?of?the?passage??
A.?Do?animals?lie??????????????????????
B.?Does?Mother?Nature?fool?animals??
C.?How?do?animals?learn?to?lie????????????
D.?How?does?honesty?help?animals?survive?

Languages
have
been
coming
and
going
for
thousands
of
years,
but
in
recent
times
there
has
been
less
coming
and
a
lot
more
going.
When
the
population
of
the
world
was
hunter-gatherers,
small,
closely
connected
groups
developed
their
own
speech
different
from
each
other.
Some
language
experts
believe
that
10,000
years
ago,
when
the
world
had
just
five
to
ten
million
people,
they
spoke
perhaps
12,000
languages
between
them.
Soon
afterwards,
many
of
those
people
started
settling
down
to
become
farmers,
and
their
languages
too
became
more
settled
and
fewer
in
number.
In
recent
centuries,
trade,
industrialization,
the
development
of
the
nation-state
and
the
spread
of
education,
especially
globalization
and
better
communications
in
the
past
few
years,
all
have
caused
many
languages
to
disappear,
and
dominant
languages
such
as
English,
Spanish
and
Chinese
are
increasingly
taking
over.
At
present,
the
world
has
about
6,800
languages.
The
distribution(分布)
of
these
languages
is
hugely
unbalanced.
The
general
rule
is
that
warm,
pleasant
areas
have
relatively
few
languages,
often
spoken
by
many
people,
while
hot,
wet
areas
have
lots,
often
spoken
by
small
numbers.
Europe
has
only
around
200
languages;
the
Americas
about
1,000;
Africa
2,400;
and
Asia
and
the
Pacific
perhaps
3,200,
of
which
Papua
New
Guinea
alone
has
well
over
800.
The
median
number
(中位数)
of
speakers
is
only
6,000,
which
means
that
half
the
world’s
languages
are
spoken
by
fewer
people
than
that.
Already
over
400
of
the
total
of
6,800
languages
are
close
to
extinction
(消亡),
with
only
a
few
elderly
speakers
left.
For
example,
Busuu
in
Cameroon
(eight
remaining
speakers),
Chiapaneco
in
Mexico
(150),
Lipan
Apache
in
the
United
States
(two
or
three)
or
Wadjigu
in
Australia
(one,
with
a
question-mark):
none
of
these
seems
to
have
much
chance
of
survival.
1.
What

A.
They

C.
They

best
explains
“dominant”

A.
Powerful.
B.

C.Simple.
D.
Modern.
3.
How
many
languages
are

less
than
6,000

at

A.
About
6,800.
B.
About
3,400.
C.
About
2,400.
D.
About
1,200.
4.
What
is
the
main
idea
of
the
text?
A.
New
languages
will
be
created.
B.
People’s
lifestyles
are
seen
in
languages.
C.
Language
development
depends
on
geography.
D.Human

Family
fights
are
never
pleasant.
Whether
you
are
dealing
with
a
loud
sister
or
a
stubborn(固
执的)
mom
or
Dad,
the
situation
can
be
bad.
What
if
it
could
be
different?
What
if
family
fights
and
conflicts(
冲突)
could
be
turned
into
chances
to
become
closer?
What
if
problems
could
be
solved
with
everyone
walking
away
feeling
more
deeply
cared
for
and
loved?
Family
fighting
is,
on
one
level,
about
power.
Someone
is
telling
someone
else
what
to
do.
In
a
short
moment,
bad
feelings
can
be
brought
out
and
the
fight
is
on.
You
can
go
down
that
old
road
or
you
can
try
something
different.
In
any
fight,
you
have
a
need
to
be
listened
to
and
understood.
People
raise
their
voices
and
shout
at
each
other
because
they’re
not
being
listened
to.
You
want
your
mom
or
dad
to
listen
and
understand.
You
want
your
brother
or
sister
to
listen
and
care.
But
you
always
seem
to
forget
that
the
person
you’re
fighting
with
has
the
same
need
to
be
listened
to.
So
if
you
can
put
aside
your
need
for
a
few
minutes,
the
situation
will
change
quickly.
Give
the
other
person
some
time
to
express
his
or
her
feelings,
and
you’ll
have
your
turn
to
be
listened
to.
And
while
you
are
listening,
you
have
to
listen
for
the
right
information.
The
best
way
to
do
this
in
emotional(情绪激动的)
situations
is
to
pay
no
attention
to
most
of
the
words
because
many
people
can’t
express
what
they
are
feeling
with
the
words
alone,
especially
when
they
are
not
calm.
But
if
the
situation
starts
to
get
out
of
hand,
it
would
be
wise
to
just
calm
down
and
leave
the
problem
until
later
because
many
fights
happen
at
the
wrong
time.
The
situation
will
die
down
quickly,
usually
in
less
than
30
seconds.
You
can
either
move
on
to
problem
solving
or
reach
an
agreement
to
work
on
it
at
a
better
time.
This
way,
everyone
will
feel
respected
and
listened
to,
even
when
there
is
conflict.
feelings
will
be
understood
and
respected,
and
it
will
bring
your
family
closer
together.

Many
of
us
know
that
Russia’s
Lake
Baikal
from
our
textbooks,
or
by
listening
to
Chinese
singer
Li
Jian’s
popular
song,
Lake
Baikal.
But
over
the
past
ten
years,
the
world’s
deepest
freshwater
lake
has
been
more
and
more
popular
because
of
an
extreme
sport.
Each
March
since
2005,
about
150
people
from
Around
the
world
take
part
in
the
Baikal
Ice
Marathon
(冰上马拉松).
They
come
to
explore
the
lake’s
breathtaking
beauty
and
challenge
themselves
in
difficult
conditions.
The
26-mile
(41.84-kilometers)
journey
starts
on
the
lake's
eastern
side.
In
March,
the
ice
is
a
meter
thick
and
iron-hard.
Runners
cross
this
frozen
surface,
finishing
on
the
western
side
of
the
lake.
The
Lake
Baikal
has
the
clearest
water.
This
means
its
ice
is
almost
perfectly
transparent
(透明的).
"Seen
from
above,
a
runner
on
the
ice
looks
as
if
he
or
she
is
jogging
through
space,
"
The
New
York
Times
noted.
The
landscape
might
be
beautiful,
but
it's
also
harsh.
Strong
cold
winds
blow
across
the
lake
and
the
average
temperature
in
March
is
around
-38℃.
But
runners
say
the
cold
climate
is
what
attracts
them.
They
want
to
test
their
limits.
"
When
you
are
in
such
an
environment,
you
don't
have
cars
around
you,
you
don’t
have
the
noise
around.
I
think
this
extreme
marathon
allows
you
to
be
alone
was
nature,"Aliceja
Barahona,
A
64-year-old
runner
from
the
US,
told
ABC
News.
Lake
Baikal
offers,
strange
and
special
characteristics
for
this
marathon.
The
finish
line
can
be
seen
from
the
start,
but
the
endless
white
offers
no
progress
markers(标记).
The
race
also
ends
with
little
noise.
Tourists
crowding,
the
ice
are
just
interested
in
snapping
selfies
(自拍)
and
didn't
care
about
the
runners.
For
some
runners,
not
having
viewers
makes
the
race
more
difficult.
They
must
fight
with
themselves.
"You
are
alone
on
Baikal.
It
is
your
race.
You
are
alone
with
yourself.
All
yon
need
to
do
is
to
defeat
yourself,"
Veoniquc
Messia,
a
French
runner,
told
the
Telegraph.

"Dad,"
I
say
one
day,
"Let’s
take
a
trip.
Why
don’t
you
fly
and
meet
me?
"
As
a
manager
from
IBM,
my
father’s
job
filled
his
day,
his
thought,
his
life.
While
he
woke
up
and
took
a
warm
shower,
I
had
fun
under
the
Eiffel
Tower.
While
he
tied
a
tie
and
put
on
the
same
Swiss
watch,
I
rowed
a
boat
across
Lake
of
the
Ozarks.
My
father
sees
me
travelling
without
a
purpose,
nothing
to
show
for
my
33
years
but
a
passport
full
of
funny
stamps.
He
wants
me
to
settle
down
(安定下来),
but
now
I
want
him
to
explore
the
world.
He
agrees
and
we
meet
four
weeks
later
in
Rapid
City.
"What
is
our
first
stop?
"
asks
my
father.
"What
time
is
it?
"
"Still
don’t
have
a
watch?
"
Less
than
an
hour
away
is
Mount
Rushmore.
As
he
looks
up
at
sculptures
of
the
four
Presidents
in
granite(花岗岩),
his
mouth
and
eyes
open
slowly,
like
those
of
little
boy.
"
Amazing,
"
he
says,
"How
was
this
done?
"
A
film
in
the
information
center
shows
sculptor(雕塑家)
Gutzon
Borglum
devoted
14
years
to
the
sculptures.
We
look
up
and
I
ask
myself,
"
Can
I
devote
my
life
to
anything?
"
No
directions,
no
purpose.
I
always
used
to
hear
those
words
in
my
father’s
voice.
Now
I
hear
them
in
my
own.
The
next
day
we’re
at
Yellowstone
National
Park,
where
we
have
a
picnic.
"
Did
you
ever
travel
with
your
dad?
"
I
ask.
"Only
once,
"
he
says.
"
I
never
spoke
much
with
my
father.
We
loved
each
other---but
never
said
it.
Whatever
he
could
give
me,
he
gave.
"
The
last
sentence----it’s
probably
the
same
thing
I
will
say
about
my
father.
And
what
I
want
my
child
to
say
about
me.
In
Glacier
National
Park,
my
father
says,
"I’ve
never
seen
water
so
blue.
"
I
have,
in
several
places
of
the
world,
I
can
keep
traveling,
I
realize---
and
maybe
a
fixed
job
won’t
be
as
boring
as
I
afraid.
Weeks
after
our
trip,
I
call
my
father.
"The
photos
from
the
trip
are
wonderful,
"
he
says.
"We
have
got
to
take
another
trip
like
that
sometime.
"
I
tell
him
I’ve
learn
decided
to
settle
down
and
find
a
fixed
job,
and
I’m
wearing
a
watch.

Joe
was
an
old
man.
The
75-year-old
lived
very
happily
in
a
village
and
had
a
beautiful
family.
His
children
grew
up
and
moved
to
different
cities.
Now,
Joe
has
four
grandchildren,
and
they
visit
him
during
their
holidays.
During
one
vacation,
Joe
was
preparing
his
home
for
the
kids:
cleaning
and
buying
their
favorite
foods.
After
he
finished
working,
he
realized
he
lost
his
favorite
watch.
The
watch
was
a
gift
from
his
wife
when
their
first
child
was
born.
Joe
treasured
the
watch
very
much,
especially
after
his
wife’s
death.
He
was
very
upset
about
losing
it.
Once
his
grandchildren
came,
they
promised
him
they
would
find
the
watch.
One
granddaughter
asked:
“Grandpa,
do
you
remember
when
you
saw
the
watch
last
before
it
went
missing?”
“I
guess
when
I
was
cleaning
the
barn!”
Joe
replied.
The
children
looked
for
more
than
two
hours
with
Joe,
but
they
could
not
find
it.
The
kids
were
now
also
sad,
but
they
tried
to
comfort
their
grandfather.
One
grandson
went
back
to
the
barn
to
look
again.
Joe
asked
why
he
was
going
there
a
second
time.
But
the
little
boy
just
asked
the
others
not
to
follow
him
and
to
keep
silent.
He
was
there
for
about
15
minutes
and
then
rushed
to
his
grandfather.
He
found
the
watch
and
happily
gave
it
to
Joe.
Joe
was
surprised
and
asked
how
he
was
able
to
find
it.
The
little
boy
replied:
”I
sat
there
without
making
a
noise,
and
the
barn
was
so
silent.
After
a
few
minutes,
I
heard
the
‘tick,
tick’
sound
and
found
the
watch.”
Joe
hugged
and
thanked
the
little
boy.
This
is
the
power
of
silence.
If
we
stay
calm,
we
are
more
able
to
find
the
solution!

Falling
down
in
public
is
terrible
for
most
people.
However,
a
new
social
media
craze(热潮)called
the
“Falling
Stars
Challenge”
has
turned
falling
into
something
fun
to
do.
The
craze
began
in
Russia.
It
was
most
popular
among
young
people.
They
posted
pictures
of
themselves
lying
face
down
as
though(好像)they
had
just
fallen
over.
Some
items
like
handbags,
decorations
and
money
were
spread
out
on
the
ground
around
them
in
the
photos.
They
shared
these
photos
on
the
Internet
to
flaunt
their
wealth.
The
craze
soon
became
popular
around
the
world.
In
China,
however,
it
is
taking
on
a
new
meaning.
People
are
using
it
to
flaunt
their
hobbies
and
talents.
The
items
in
their
pictures
show
what
they
do
for
a
living
and
what
they
have
achieved
in
their
work.

For
example,
students
fall
down
onto
textbooks
and
test
papers.
Police
officers
fall
in
front
of
their
police
cars
with
handcuffs
in

hands.
Famous

Chinese

this
challenge
on
Sina
Weibo.
Their

have

more
than
2.22
billion
times.
Internet
users
also
discuss
these
photos.
Most
of
them
speak
highly
of
the
craze.
One
Sina
Weibo
user
wrote,
“This
shows
the
positive
energy
of
fighting
and
working
hard.
Cheer
for
these
young
people!”
However,
some
also
think
the
craze
is
just
another
example
of
a
successful
Internet
meme(网络爆红).
They
think
people
are
just
imitating(模仿)others.
What
do
you
think
of
the
challenge?
Will
you
try
it?
