Step 2 Language comprehension and extension
1. Word study: compose
(1) Understand the meaning of compose in the article and its derivations
T: Last night, I watched a performance of Butterfly Lovers, a beautiful violin concerto composed by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang. (para. 1, lines 1–3) What’s the meaning of compose here?
T: It means “to write music”. Could you translate the sentence into Chinese?
S: 昨晚,我观看了一场《梁祝》的演出,这是由何占豪、陈钢创作的一部动听的小提琴协奏曲。
T: Now let’s do some practice about compose.
2. Word study: deserve
T: Well done. What does the author think of the performance? Can you find the sentence to support her opinion?
S: It’s a piece that really deserves to be heard.
T: If somebody or something deserves something, it is right that they should have it, because of the way they have behaved or because of what they are.
T: Now let’s do some practice about deserve.
3. Expression study: tear … apart
T: Since the author thinks highly of the performance, what is the classic story of Butterfly Lovers about?
S: The story is about a young couple torn apart by their families.
T: What does “torn apart” mean in this sentence?
S: It means “separated from each other”.
T: Can you choose proper phrases for the following sentences?
4. Word study: dramatic
T: How does the music change when the lovers are separated by Zhu’s father?
S: The music changes from being fast and cheerful to being heavier.
T: Then the music gets dramatic with heavier notes and that is when the lovers are separated because Zhu’s father forces her to marry another man. Please translate the sentence into Chinese.
S: 接下来,曲调突然变得沉重,此时这对情侣被拆散,因为祝英台的父亲逼她另嫁他人。
T: “dramatic” in this sentence means sudden, very great and often surprising. What does “dramatic” mean in the following phrases?
5. Word study: overcome
T: How does Zhu respond to the loss of her love?
S: She is very sad and jumps into his grave.
T: We can use “be overcome with” to indicate “to be extremely strongly affected by sth”. In other cases, if you overcome a problem or a feeling, you successfully deal with it and control it. Now let’s do some practice about overcome.
6. Word study: combine
T: What is special about the violin concerto Butterfly Lovers?
S: It combines Chinese and Western musical elements.
T: Butterfly Lovers combines Chinese and Western musical elements: it is played on Western instruments such as the violin, but more significantly, much of the music has its roots in Chinese Yue Opera. Who can put it into Chinese?
S:《梁祝》融合了中西方的音乐元素:以西方乐器,譬如小提琴等演奏,但更重要的是,其曲调大多源自中国的越剧。
T: “combine” in the sentence is used to mean “mix”. Here are more examples to show how the word is used.
T: Now let’s do some practice about combine.
7. Expression study: throw … in, for good measure
T: In the second email, the author shares with us some of the information about country music. What are the features of country music?
S: The tunes are easy to sing, and the lyrics often leave you in deep thought. Most of the songs are about hardship and heartbreak, but also about hope—with plenty of humour thrown in for good measure.
T: Who can translate the sentences into Chinese?
S: 乡村音乐的调子朗朗上口,歌词常常发人深省。大部分歌曲唱的是艰难与心碎,但也有希望——其中还附加了很多幽默元素。
T: The phrase “throw something in” means “to include sth with what you are selling or offering, without increasing the price”. The phrase “for good measure” means “as an extra amount of something in addition to what has already been done or given”.
T: Now let’s do some practice about throw … in and for good measure.
8. Word study: guarantee
T: How does the author strongly recommend country music to his friend?
S: Why don’t you try to listen to some great country music? I guarantee you’ll enjoy it!
T: Now let’s do some practice about guarantee.
T: If you guarantee something, you promise that it will definitely happen.

3. T asks two questions about the passage.

【设计意图:通过讲解和与学生的互动,让学生了解这些重要词汇的用法且学会运用到语境里。】
