The deeper she fell, the weaker the sound was.
The author(作者) uses the short word “down” three times to show the hole was really deep and Alice fell down continuously(持续).
It also shows during that period(阶段), Alice may be amazed, excited and a little nervous(紧张的).
It adds(增添) an air of mystery(一种神秘感) to the fairy tale.
