Sleeping is important, and we all know that. Many people have experienced strange sleeping patterns, weird (奇怪的) dreams and a feeling of restlessness and tiredness despite a good night’s sleep. So what sort of things can help you to improve your sleep?
There are a lot of myths related to sleep, some of which can be quite damaging for our health. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously claimed that she only slept for five hours a night. But according to experts, this is harmful to health. Likewise, sleeping in front of the TV is another thing to avoid. The bright lights can prevent you from entering a deep sleep.
From a young age we’re told to count sheep to help us to fall asleep, with some choosing to stay in bed to battle with insomnia. However, some experts advise getting up and doing something mindless, like folding socks, to help us get in the mood to fall asleep.
Psychologist Seth J. Gillihan PhD recommends walking to help in the battle against the issue. He talks about a sleep study published in the journal Sleep Health which suggests that those who walk slightly more will experience better quality and length of sleep. Watching what you eat or drink can also improve the amount of rapid eye movement you experience.
If you’re a snorer(打鼾者), you might also want to take note. While most snoring is harmless, it could be a sign of sleep apnoea (室息), with people suffering from the condition more likely to have heart attacks, irregular heartbeats or high blood pressure.
Finally, a good nap(小睡), or even a power nap, can help you to be more alert, calm and focused. So while there are some good tips like exercising or folding socks to help us get a good night’s sleep, sometimes a good afternoon’s sleep can help us face the day ahead.
24. What is opposed by the experts?
A. Sleeping with the window open. B. Sleeping in front of a switched-on TV.
C. Exercising before going to bed. D. Sleeping over five hours per night.
25. What does the underlined word “insomnia” probably mean?
A. Sleeplessness. B. Headache. C. Confusion. D. Unconsciousness.
26. What should a snorer pay attention to?
A. Unusual blood pressure. B. Regular heartbeats.
C. Chances of heart disease. D. The possibility of sleep apnoea.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. How to Fall Asleep Fast. B. The Myths of Sleeping Patterns.
C. How to Improve Your Sleep. D. The Power of a Good Night’s Sleep.

Recently, I moved from Beijing to a very small town on the west coast of Ireland. Every time I looked out of my living room window in Beijing, I would see shoppers, friends hanging out and taking photos, and bicyclists and cars passing by with horns sounding. Now, when I look out of my window in Ireland, I have a view of a mountain across the road and sometimes I see a horse or a cow in the field leading to the mountain.
To break up the monotony(单调) of the small-town life, I often go for drives around the area. On any given day, these drives allow me to enjoy the breathtaking views of a mostly untouched landscape. Besides, you really can take your time driving around, because there are so many twists and turns around mountains, lakes and villages, where you have to drive pretty slowly.
In Ireland there are two official languages. One is Irish and the other is English. Some Irish people also speak Hiberno-English, which is a mix of the two, blending (混合) the grammatical style of Irish with English words. Today most people in Ireland use English, but Irish is taught in primary and secondary schools. Preserving the Irish language and culture in this small country is important.
As I plan to stay in Ireland for the foreseeable future, something I like to do is read literature that describes local life. Recently I picked up the book Brooklyn, which tells a beautiful story about the journey of a young Irish woman named Eilis who immigrates to the United States. Eilis’ story gives me a good insight(深刻理解) into Irish life. Reading this wonderful book allows me to see through her eyes how rich Irish culture and traditional values were during that period of time.
Even though Ireland is a foreign country to me, there is some comfort knowing part of my own family came from this place. I often receive a lot of warm greetings from the locals, because in a way we are like family.
28. What can we know about the author?
A. She went from a noisy urban life to a quiet country life.
B. She lived in Ireland before she went to China.
C. She likes looking out of her window in her house.
D. She loves her life in Beijing more than in a small town of Ireland.
29. In this very small town, the author______.
A. lives a colorful life. B. works as a taxi driver.
C. is tired of the life there. D. is not allowed to drive fast.
30. What do we know about the language - Irish?
A. It is mixed with English. B. It will disappear very soon.
C. It is still valued in Ireland. D. It was already replaced by English.
31. What does Eilis’ story bring to the author?
A. It makes her like to read literature.
B. It makes her fall in love with Irish culture.
C. It makes her have a strong desire to travel to Ireland.
D. It makes her understand Irish life back then well.

Scientists have found a way to make running water as clean as pure water, thanks to a tiny device (装置).
Water purification(净化) is a big problem in the developing world, where people can only drink a limited amount of clean running water. Current methods involve either boiling water that has to use precious resources or relying on the sun, which is free but takes several hours to work. However, this problem could be solved someday thanks to a small device. Although it’s still a long way off from the market, it is hoped that the new device, created the researchers at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University, will make much slower purification techniques disused.
Being half the size of a stamp, the device uses visible(看得见的) light to get the job done. Visible light, a type of electromagnetic radiation, is pretty much exactly what it sounds like —light that most human eyes can pick up on. Other types of electromagnetic radiation include microwaves, X-rays and so on. The device features “nanoflakes(纳米片)”, which turn into a photocatalyst(光催化剂) when affected by incoming light, so they can absorb the full range of visible sunlight. Nanoflakes are covered with a kind of common metal material which can rid the water of 99.999 percent of bacteria in just 20 minutes effectively by producing some special chemical substances, so the device is inexpensive, environment-friendly and easy to make.
“Our device looks like a little rectangle of black glass. We just dropped it into the water and put everything under the sun, and the sun did all the work,” says lead author Chong Liu in a press release. The study results were published in Nature Nanotechnology. So far, the device has only been challenged by three lab-based types of bacteria, rather than the complex collection of pollutants found in the real world. Researchers say the next steps are to test it on other bacteria as well as viruses in the lab. Then they will try out the device in naturally polluted water such as that found in developing countries. They predict that it will take three to five more years to finish the development.
32. What does the author think of the running water in the developing countries?
A. It is very precious. B. It will be purified more effectively one day.
C. It is really very clean. D. It costs people a lot of money.
33. What does the new device make use of to clear bacteria in water?
A. X-rays. B. Common sunlight.
C. Microwaves. D. Expensive resources.
34. Why does the new device still have a long way off from the market?
A. It can only kill a limited number of bacteria now.
B. It is hard to produce.
C. It wastes a lot of nutrition in water.
D. It will take more than five years to improve itself.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. How to Purify Polluted Water.
B. The Benefits of Water Purification.
C. A Tiny Device That Purifies Water.
D. How to Make Full Use of Nanoflakes.

Stay organized with a study schedule. Keep a detailed plan listing all your tests and assignments. 38 . For each day, write down the homework or studying you have to do and when you plan to do it. 39 . Mark out time slots((时间段) to work on long-term projects and study for big tests, so that you don’t push them to the last minute.
40 . Sleep is the best ingredient to help you focus. Staying up late studying on school nights is not a good idea for long-term success. Lack of sleep prevents you from concentrating and reduces your ability to remember what you have learned.
A. Your quality of sleep improves.
B. This can be done on paper or online.
C. Make sure you get enough sleep every night.
D. Make sure the TV and radio are off.
E. It’s beneficial to devote at least 5 minutes to reviewing assignments.

I have learned that volunteers for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games is needed. I’m writing to apply to this position. As a native of Beijing, I think it is a privilege and duty for me to offer the best voluntary service to our foreign guests and meanwhile promoting Chinese culture. I believe I’m equally to the job. I have good command of English and I’m confident in giving players guidance and help as requiring. What’s more, I have a knowledge of winter sports, which they will prove helpful in communicating with players. However, I have been involved in several international exchange programs, but enjoy spreading our culture to foreigners.
I would appreciate it if you could offer me the opportunities. Thank you for your time and consideration.
