I couldn't even sort through the first box of our dog Bama's toys without bursting into tears. My husband, Alan, found me sitting on the floor, holding our dog's favorite toy. He gently pulled me to my feet. "It's okay, Lisa," he said. "I'll put these away. Why don't you go outside and get some air?"
I nodded.
It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. Alan and I didn't have children. Our boxer (拳师犬) was our baby. After Bama's death, we couldn't bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep. I told myself I'd do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn't.
Now I sat on my front porch (门廊) and sobbed. Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I dismissed the idea. We couldn't go through that kind of heartbreak again.
I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. Was he real or just my wishful imagination? I blinked. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He came across the street, straight toward me. Hesitantly, I offered my hand. He sniffed it eagerly then he licked (舔) me. I let out a surprised laugh. He pushed his head into my lap to be petted.
This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and well-dressed. He wore a collar but had no ID.I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen another boxer around. I would have remembered if I had.
"Where did you come from?" I asked the dog, scratching him behind the ears.
He just sat there at ease. He didn't seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.
"Alan!" I called. "You have to come to see this!"
Alan joined me, and we sat together in surprise for a moment. Then the boxer got up and slowly ran off.

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people."Not for a million dollars," I would have said. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." I'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?" A few excited hands shot up-mine, of course, was not one of them-and Mrs Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
Paragraph 1:
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs Sather asked me to go to her.

Paragraph 2:
Hearing Mrs Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change.

“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour. ”
Groups of incoming freshmen happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother's side to tour the campus with other freshmen;I felt a little anxious.
We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made casual introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this ? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college. . .?
My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I'm Jennifer.” “I'm Lauren, “I replied.” Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus?“she smiled. I'm not sure,” I said. “You should live on campus! It will be a lot of fun!”she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.
We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins(课程公告)and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn't even opened my course catalog(目 录).
“Focus,” I told myself. Just read through the catalog and find the courses you like and a schedule that works. "Psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, History, sections 1, 2, 3. . . The list went on and on.
I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it?I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.
Paragraph 1:
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.
Paragraph 2:
Then, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder.

When there was news that a storm was coming, Sarah didn’t think much about it. She simply shrugged it off like any other normal day. When she went to the grocery store and saw that it was full, she still didn’t worry.
People ran like mad between aisles (过道), grabbing what they could. Bare shelves and long lines made Sarah chuckle (窃笑). They must be overreacting, she thought.
On her way home, she looked overhead. Dark clouds were indeed forming. And they seemed to be moving quickly across the sky. Still, Sarah was not bothered. The rain would be nice since it had been warm lately.
When she got home, Sarah made popcorn and sat on the sofa with her dog, Cooper, and got ready to watch a movie. Just as she hit play on the remote, she heard the thunder. Rain started to come down hard, making it almost impossible to see the trees in her front yard through the window. Cooper immediately jumped from the sofa, barking in fear in the corner.
“It’s OK.” Sarah said. She moved to one side and saw Cooper looked a bit nervous. Sarah turned off the movie and instead skipped to the local news station. The storm was much more serious than she had thought. People in a nearby city even said they spotted a tornado. The reporter advised people to stay inside and secure all of the doors and windows.
Sarah got up and began making her way around the house. Cooper followed close behind as she checked all of the windows to make sure they were all fully closed. By the time she got back to her sofa, the rain had stopped. “That wasn’t so bad,” Sarah said aloud. “Just a nice shower.”
She turned to cooper, who had gone back to the corner and still looked a bit frightened. She looked outside. It was actually very calm, but she could see that the wind was picking up. The branches of the trees were swinging and the garbage bin had tipped over.

Walking across campus with every pair of eyes on you can be embarrassing, especially when you're 13 years old. I looked around me in desperate search of a friendly face ,a smile, anything. I was quite disappointed, to say the least. And 1,in turn, felt somewhat foolish, walking across campus with a false smile on my face. I was simply attempting to follow the advice my mother had given me years before: when things get awkward, smile. No matter where you are, a smile will always be understood. A smile is universal. At that very moment, however, I felt my mother's advice didn't work.
On top of it all, my mind was racing with questions and concerns typical of any 13-year-old on the first day of school: where would I sit at lunch? Who would I talk to? Not to mention, how would I make friends when I didn't even speak the language? My heartbeat quickened, and I felt nervous. Still. I did my best to maintain calm so as not to let my guard down and reveal to others just how seared I truly was.
When the teacher introduced me to the class as the “American girl", 10 sets of hands immediately shot up. Some students had questions, others wanted to practice their English with me. Because I didn't speak much Chinese yet, I communicated with the other students through hand motions mixed in with broken English and Chinese. Despite the attention, I wasn't sure how much of it was positive. It was almost as if they weren't sure what to make of me and I was being examined. Then again, who could blame them? After all, I was the first American ever to attend the school. So essentially, we were all first timers.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention. He was hiking the remote expanse of land behind his ranch (大牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and covered the grass was a balloon—or at least the remains of one. Heiss walked toward it with his dog, Feliz, thinking he should pick up the latex (乳胶) pieces and throw them away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper.
“Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word.
Heiss turned the paper over quickly. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t very good, but I could see it was a Christmas list,” he said.
Heiss was charmed. He thought that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent into the air, but he wondered whether he couldn’t find the child who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss knew about 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. “Based on the prevailing wind (盛行风), I was pretty sure that’s where it came from,” he said.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes, and art supplies among other things.
Heiss then posted about his request on the Internet, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family.
A few days passed with no leads; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. Therefore, he decided to send a private message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales if they could help.

The next day, there was a strange scratching at the door. I opened it and found my unexpected guest—the mystery boxer, who seemed to still remember me. He came over lightly and licked my hand, as if trying to erase my painful memories. Seeing him follow me from room to room, I gradually felt the ache in my heart lessen. I suddenly realized that I could pass Bama's favorite toys to my guest. So each day I would stand at the front door, waiting for the happy moment when my guest came and played with the toys.
A week later, a young man I'd never seen before came in to visit. The man said his family had just
moved to the neighborhood. He asked me if I happened to see a dog, a boxer recently. I said "Yes" and told him actually "my guest" had been paying me regular visits. He looked embarrassed and then apologized for the trouble his cutie caused for me. I told him there is no need to apologize and actually he was a big help in working through my grief. It has been three years since that day. Now Bama's toys don't just sit in the room, gathering dust.

When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Mrs. Sather stared into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. “I would love you to give this a try for me. But if you really don't want to, I won’t make you. It is your choice.” Mrs. Sather wanted me in this role. She shocked me, for I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public.
Hearing Mrs Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. I decided to throw off my shy cloak. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head, confidently saying “Mrs Sather I want to, no, I am determined to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well.” Looking at me with a big smile on face, Mrs Sather said ''I believe in you. If you met some problem, you can turn to me.'' ''Thank you! '' I left her office happily.

Paragraph 1:
Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms. Many of them rushed out to meet their parents. I couldn’t breathe and was feeling anxious. My head was pounding. Moments later, I was crying. And several students started to stare at me. One of the seniors in charge walked over to my table. “What’s the matter?” she asked impatiently. “I... I can’t do this!” I said. “All you have to do is make your schedule, just like everybody else,” she said, clearly annoyed.
Paragraph 2:
Then, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder. I looked back and found Jennifer standing behind me. “Everything is alright,” she told the senior. “I’ll help her.” The senior walked away. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” Jennifer asked. Hearing Jennifer’s kind words, I cried even harder, saying, “It’s just too much!” Then Jennifer put her arm around me and said, “Let me instruct you.” She then guided me through the process step by step until I completed my schedule. Later, when saying goodbye, we made a promise to keep in touch.

Obviously, a storm was on its way. Sarah saw something like a gray funnel moving in the distance. Tornado! In a flash, with a burst of thunder, rain poured down once again, beating heavily against the windows. The wind was roaring and many trees were uprooted. The storm lasted days, which made Sarah increasingly nervous. Cold and hungry, she regretted she had made no preparations for the terrible weather!
Trapped at home, Sarah wondered how she could survive. Just then, she thought of the community helpline. She telephoned to state her difficulties. An hour later, Sarah heard a knock at the door and in came the community workers with food and necessities. She was really grateful for their timely help. It is the true kindness and love in the community that helped her survive the terrible weather.

Then came the first class --- Chinese painting. The teacher showed us how to use a brush to paint bamboo on a piece of white paper. Then all the other students were in business. But it was quite difficult for me. How could I hold the stiff brush and made it go as I wished? Hesitating for a while, I tried dipping the brush into the ink bottle. When I took it out, drops of black ink fell on the white paper. There was no bamboo, but big black dots!
As I burnt with great embarrassment, Li Hua, who was next to me, gave me a warm smile. I smiled back awkwardly. She came over and demonstrated how to use the brush. The brush moved across the paper, and a lively bamboo appeared! With her help, I finally completed the task, although it was such a ugly one. After that, we became good friends. She taught me Chinese while I taught her English. We both made great progress in our studies. Yes, my mother was right. A smile did make a difference.

Paragraph?1:
To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away. Heiss’s wife helped explain the situation to Radio XENY host, who talked on the air about the quest to find Dayami and posted it on the station’s website. The next morning, Heiss awoke to another message from Radio XENY: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl, and her family, who indeed lived in Nogales. Would they be willing to arrange a get-together at the radio station?
Paragraph?2:
They bought just about everything on Dayami’s list. They also bought a few other toys for good measure. Then the Heisses drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They arrived at the Radio XENY offices with presents and finally met her. Her parents explained to the Heisses that Dayami had been writing a letter containing her Christmas list to Santa and sending it by balloon for years, but this was the first time anyone had found the note. “It was a beautiful, beautiful experience,” Heiss said. He paused. “Quite healing for us,” he added.
