My dad's life seemed typical of his generation. He graduated from high school during the Depression and worked for a large company. He enlisted(入伍)in 1941,served in the Pacific and Europe.
On returning, he met my mother, married and had three children. Because of the job, he needed to continue his education. With his full-time job and attending to his family. he attended college in the evening and obtained his degree.
As kids, we knew what Dad told us. During cold winters he sympathized with unfortunate kids in just T-shirt and shorts. He was saddened by children with nothing under the Christmas tree. He loved kids and schools and he wanted to spread kindness to everyone in need of help, so he was always ready to give a hand to people he met.
With us three kids on our own. Dad and Mom retired and came to Florida. Two years lat- er Mom died, in 1980. From that time. Dad got into the habit of walking around his house. He also tried golf but failed to become addicted to it. Although it was hard time for Dad, he didn't give up the hope of life. He decided to do something meaningful to society.
Then he saw an ad requesting literacy(读写能力)volunteers.Dad helped some children, who were homeless learn to read and write. He also helped an old man learn to read because his literate wife was going blind. He told us he even wanted to be a teacher to help more people.
As time passed, Dad had some health problems. His legs became weak and he started to have trouble in sleeping. My brother, my younger sister and I came to look after him, telling him to stop doing the volunteer work and have a rest at home. However, he was so stubborn that he disagreed with us and insisted on his decision.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here,”my mom called. Following her voice,I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me,something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn't wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother's love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile,Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结)as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon,it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car,my mom took me aside and said in a low voice,“It's the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him,Honey.”I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn't use to be hard. But after Henry moved in,everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved,it didn't seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up,ready to act out our short play,I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring(束带)on my skirt. Sure enough,my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt,I could feel my face burst into flames. However,my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.
Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.
However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.

Mom was born in a small village, which is famous for paper-folding art, and Mom learnt how to make paper animals. In 1967, Mom went to Hong Kong, where she met Dad. They went to the suburbs of Connecticut later. Not knowing English, she was lonely until I was born.
When I was young, Mom liked to make paper animals for me. She folded up the paper, then lifted the paper packet to her mouth and blew into it. There in her hands was a little paper tiger. It seemed that the little tiger shared her breath. This was her magic. At my request, Mom also made a goat, a deer and even a shark.
Mark, one of the neighborhood boys, came over with his Star Wars action figure. I brought out the paper tiger. Mark examined the wrapping-paper pattern of the tiger’s skin. "That doesn’t look like a tiger. Is it a toy? ""I had never thought of that. But looking at it, it was really just a piece of wrapping paper.
Later, Dad bought me a full set of Wars action figures. I packed the paper animals in a shoebox and put them into the comer of the attic(阁楼). Once in a while, I would see Mom at the kitchen table making new paper animals. I caught them, pressed and then put them away in the box in the attic.
Mom was also trying to learn to speak English, but her accent and broken sentences embarrassed me. I tried to correct her. but in vain. Eventually. I stopped talking with her. For years, I paid no attention to Mom until one day my Dad called and told me that Mom was in hospital. Dad and I stood, one on each side of Mom. She turned to me, " Jack, just keep that box with you, and you will find it so important. "
She died several days later. Dad aged raw after that. The house was too big for him and had to be sold. My girlfriend Susan and I went to help him pack and clean the place.
Susan found the shoebox in the attic.
I unfolded the paper tiger and found several lines of Chinese characters written by my mother.

“I don't want to see that cat in our yard again," my husband said as he drove the beautiful cat back into the neighbor's yard. "Cats aren't like dogs, honey. They are very independent and tend to move around wherever they please, especially if they are mousing, I said. Well, text our neighbor and let her know I don't appreciate her cat in our yard," he insisted. Sighing, I sent off a quick text to our sweet neighbor, Cheryl, informing her of my husband's dislike of cats. I'll do my best, " she replied sometime later, “ but it's kind of hard controlling where she goes when I let her outside." The following morning, John stood at the picture window in our bedroom. He’d installed it so that I could watch the birds visiting our feeders.
“You aren't going to believe this," he said. "Come look!" Slowly, I approached the window, praying Cheryl's cat wasn't in our yard. u0h, my God!” I cried. Seated side by side, right in the center of our yard, were two enormous groundhogs(土拨鼠). We'd observed groundhogs before, especially since our back yard backs, up to a wooded area, but never had they been as brave as these two. John raised the window, and the two raced into the woods. That evening, I happened to glance out the picture window. Then something caught my eye in the flowerbed beyond. "John, come quick! ” Hurriedly, he entered the bedroom just in time to see one of the groundhogs chewing on the flowers we'd planted around the water fountain. "Why, it's eating every single blossom !"
Again, John lifted the window, and the groundhog fled into the woods. "Hmmm, I better look up groundhogs on the computer and see just how destructive they can be." Before he left the room, however, he saw something again. A groundhog was chewing our vegetables in the center of the garden. Across the yard, we'd planted a vegetable garden. We'd taken great pains to enclose the rows and rows of plants in chicken wire.

I am Sadie. I love oceans, especially the one near my grandma's house with beautiful shells. Why? That's what I am about to tell you.
It all started when my parents divorced a few weeks ago. I had remained silent since then. So my mother decided to send me to Florida to live with my grandma.
On the way to my grandma’s house, my mother said, “Sadie, I know we are not the best family you can have and I truly apologize. I just do not know how to be a mother. But remember, Sadie, whatever happened, I do love you." These words made me sadder.
When we arrived, Grandma told me to go upstairs and unpack my things while she spoke to my mother. When I saw a blue and green painted room with a huge window and a comfortable bed, I thought, Moving to Florida might not be that bad." I comforted my-self as I walked towards the window. I opened the curtains and saw sky-blue waves slowly washing away the sand on the beach and sea birds flying in the clear sky. The ocean was only a few hundred meters away from here.
After my mother left, Grandma softly touched my shoulder, “I want to take you to the place I called 'the Big Blue’. And I think you might like it." (I guess you could know where it is.)
?Before I stepped on the sand I could smell the ocean. Together we enjoyed the sunset with a whole lot of yellow and orange. Suddenly she picked out the most beautiful shell I had ever seen in my life. It was almost gold, shining in the sunlight. I couldn’t move my eyes off it.

Be fore long, Dad made his dream come true. As it happened, a teacher who lived near Dad's home resigned. The school needed someone to help teach students. Dad realized it was time to take action. He began work as a teacher's assistant in a third grade class, helping children with spelling and grading papers. He spent a lot of time with the students, playing games and singing songs with them. As a result, all the students like getting along with him.
One year later, something surprising happened. Dad's physical condition turned better. He explained to me that the students kept him healthy. He said every time he stayed with the children, he moved and smiled a lot, which made him feel energetic and happy. Seeing Dad was satisfied with life, I learned a lesson: Our value shouldn't be limited by the face and age,but it should depend on what we can do for others.

Right then,Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me,something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance,I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help,I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere,I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.
