A broad outline
小说的主人公Oliver Twist,是一名生在济贫院的孤儿,忍饥挨饿,备受欺凌,由于不堪教区执事邦布儿等人的虐待而独自逃往伦敦,不幸刚一到达就受骗误入贼窟。窃贼团伙的首领费尽千方百计,企图把奥利弗训练为扒手供他驱使。当费金试图惩罚毒打奥利弗的时候,Nancy挺身而出保护了奥利弗。奥利弗跟随窃贼伙伴上街时,被误认为他偷了一位叫布朗洛的绅士的书。还好买书人作证,才了事。
一天黑夜,奥利弗在塞克斯的胁迫下参加对一座大宅院的行窃。被管家发现后开枪打伤。窃贼仓惶逃跑时,把奥利弗丢弃在路旁水沟之中。奥利弗在雨雪之中带伤爬行,无意中昏到。好心的主人梅丽夫人及其养女罗斯小姐收留并庇护了他。无巧不成书,这位罗斯小姐正是奥利弗的姨妈,但双方都不知道。在这里,奥利弗真正享受到了人生的温馨和美好。
但费金窃贼团伙却不能放过奥利弗。有一天一个名叫蒙克斯的人来找费金,这人是奥利弗的同父异母兄长,由于他的不肖,他父亲在遗嘱中将全部遗产给了奥利弗,只有奥利弗和蒙克斯是一样的不肖儿女,遗产才可由蒙克斯继承。为此蒙克斯出高价买通费金,要他使奥利弗变成不可救药的罪犯,以便霸占奥利弗名下的全部遗产,并发泄自己对已去世的父亲的怨恨。
正当蒙克斯得意洋洋的谈到他如何毁灭了能证明奥利弗身份的唯一证据的时候,被Nancy听见。 Nancy见义勇为,同情奥利弗的遭遇,冒生命危险,偷偷找到罗斯小姐,向她报告了这一切。 后经过一些列事件,事情真相大白,奥利弗被布朗洛收为养子,从此结束了他的苦难的童年。
Pre-listening
1. Turn to Page 34, Activity 1. Make some predictions according to the sentences given before listening to the tape.
collar cry drag even let go rough scream thief (pl. thieves)
collar: the part around the neck of a shirt, jacket or coat that usually folds down
drag: to pull sb./sth. along with effort and difficulty
let go: to stop holding sth./sth.
rough: where there is a lot of violence or crime.
scream: to give a loud, high cry, because you are hurt, frightened, excited, etc.
Read the sentences and guess what’s
happening
A young woman suddenly screamed, “Oh my dear brother!” and threw her arms round his neck.
b. “Don’t!” cried Oliver, struggling. “Let go of me!”
Oliver is carrying books.
She says he ran away from home.
c. The man hit Oliver again and seized him by the collar. “You little thief!” he cried.
d. “That’s right!” cried a man who was watching from a window.
He said that he didn’t know them.
He was astonished because the young woman was Nancy.
e. It was a rough neighbourhood and it was already dark.
f. The man dragged him into a narrow street and pulled him along so fast that he could not even shout for help.
He said that Oliver stole them.
Oliver is most frightened of the man.
2. Work in pairs and discuss the questions.
1) Is the neighbourhood safe
The neighbourhood is not safe, because the sentence tells us it
was a rough neighbourhood.
2) Why don’t people try to help Oliver
Because they are cold-hearted.
3) Where does the man take Oliver
He takes Oliver to the place where the thieves live.
Listening
1. Listen to the passage and answer the
question.
1) What is Oliver carrying at the beginning of the passage
Oliver is carrying books.
2) Why does the young woman describe Oliver as naughty
She says he ran away from home.

强调句
It is(was)+被强调部分+that(who)+其余部分
I saw Kate in the park last week.

1.强调句一般可强调主语,宾语,状语等。
It 本身没词义,只起引导作用。
2.引导词that/who/whom,
3.be: is/ was

注 意
1.当被强调部分指人时,可用that,也可用who;指物时,只用that
It was Tom ( ) I met last week.
It is a new book( ) his brother wants to buy.
2.强调状语时,只用that,不用when,where.
It is at 5 o'clock( )the train will arrive.

注 意
3.被强调的部分是主语时,注意句子的谓语动词和被强调的主语保持一致。如:

4.一般疑问句的强调句为“Is (was) it +强调部分+ that… 特殊疑问句为:“特殊疑问词+ is (was) it +that… ”结构。如:
He will leave for Hong Kong at 7:00 .

5. “not…until…”句型的强调结构为“It is/was not until…that…”如:

6.区分定语从句和强调句型某些定语从句和强调句型形式差不多,容易混淆。如果去掉it is /was that句子仍然通顺成立,则为强调句型,不成立不通顺,则为定语从句。比较:

It was six o’clock________ he got home.
