Workplaces all over the UK are preparing for Christmas and all the traditions and customs that come with it. But will Christmas be a cause for happiness and celebration or embarrassment and disappointment?
One way that colleagues in Britain show their appreciation of each other at this time of year is by doing “Secret Santa” present giving. At that time, people who work together buy each other gifts without saying whom they are from.
Co?workers all write their names on a piece of paper and then organize a lottery in which each workmate takes another colleague's name at random (任意地). Each person then has to buy a present for the colleague whose name they have picked, usually with an agreed price set at a small amount of money such as five or ten pounds.
As the gifts are given without knowing the names of the gift givers, the quality of the presents can be very different; gifts that people received are from tickets to the opera to an air?freshener for a car.
Another common seasonal workplace tradition is the office Christmas party, when workmates put on their most attractive clothes and enjoy lots of free wine.
Although most parties are held without_a_hitch,_sometimes the effects of alcohol (酒精) cause party goers to regret their drunken antics (古怪行为).
The BBC invited people to share their most embarrassing (令人尴尬的) Christmas office party stories, and received hundreds of funny stories, such as the man who split his trousers back to front with his strange dance moves or the drunken lady who spent the entire night with back of her dress tucked into her pants and saw the photos that proved it later at work.
But the worst story must surely come from Stuart Vaines, who got so drunk that he put his boss's head into the toilet. Unsurprisingly, he lost his job the very next day.
21.By saying this Christmas will cause embarrassment, the author actually refers to_________.
A.the workmate who receives a ticket to the opera
B.the man who receives an air?freshener
C.the lady who tucked the back of her dress in her pants
D.the man who put his boss's head into the toilet
22.The underlined phrase “without a hitch” in Paragraph 6 most probably means “_________”.
A.without trouble B.without an end
C.without free drinks D.with less people
23.It is implied in the passage that _________.
A.the gift givers do not know whom they will give gifts to
B.some workmates are not generous enough to buy expensive gifts
C.the BBC is interested in people's funny stories
D.some party?goers will wish they haven't drunk so much
24.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Office Parties at Christmas
B.Happiness from Office Parties
C.Celebrations in Workplaces at Christmas
D.Funny Stories from Office Parties

People are less willing to depend on their knowledge and say they know something when they have access (使用某物的机会) to the Internet, which suggests that our connection to the Internet is influencing how we think.
Professor Evan Risko, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, led a recent study where the team asked about 100 volunteers a series of general?knowledge questions, such as naming the capital of France. For half of the study, volunteers had access to the Internet. They could turn to the Internet when they thought they did not know the answer. In the other half of the study, volunteers did not have access to the Internet.
The team found that the people who had access to the Internet were about 5% more likely to say that they did not know the answer to the question. Besides, in some cases, the people with access to the Internet reported feeling as though they know less compared to the people without access.
“As the Internet becomes more popular, we are almost frequently connected to a lot of information. And when that information is within reach, people seem less likely to depend on their own knowledge,” said Professor Risko.
Studying the results, the researchers supposed that access to the Internet might make it less acceptable to say you know something but in fact it's incorrect. It is also possible that volunteers were more likely to say they didn't know an answer when they had access to the Internet because online searching offers a chance to confirm (证实) their answer, and the effort in finding out the answer is rewarding.
“Our results suggest that access to the Internet influences the decisions we make about what we know and don't know,” said Risko. “We hope this research helps us understand how easily having access to the Internet can influence the way we think.”
25.What's the study mainly about?
A.The importance of the Internet.
B.The change brought by technology.
C.People's dependence on the Internet.
D.People's way of getting information.
26.What do we know about the questions asked in the study?
A.They were simple. B.They were difficult.
C.They were personal. D.They were interesting.
27.What can be learned about the volunteers with access to the Internet in the study?
A.They're more careful.
B.They're more knowledgeable.
C.They're willing to get more knowledge.
D.They're uncertain about their answers.

I am crazy about horses. I remember that the first time I got on a horse, I fell in love with the animal. From then on, I kept begging my parents for a horse.
When I was four years old, I had selective mutism — a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my family, but was silent at school and in given social situations. Kids like me have normal IQs but sometimes we just cannot speak. We do not do this purposely; it feels impossible to speak.
My parents found a doctor to help me. He said that I was going to be given a chance to get whatever I wanted. I couldn't believe my good luck, but I could not answer. Finally, I was allowed to whisper (低声说) the answer in my mother's ear, “A horse.”
I was to get a little horse, but before that I had a list of tasks to finish. I had to answer the phone five times a week. And I had to say one word to my teacher at school every day. For a child with selective mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
Finally, I did everything and I got a perfect horse. His name is Sequoia and I love him.
As I see them, horses are silent too, but they are powerful and free at the same time. Horses give me the power I need. They give me a reason to push myself. When things get difficult, I go to my horse, Sequoia. With him, I find my voice.
I am an active member of society now. I feel I owe (归功于) my life to Sequoia. I am so grateful that I can look out my back door and see my beautiful horse looking back at me. He has given me the best gift I could ever imagine — my life.
28.What do we know about kids with selective mutism?
A.They cannot recover.
B.They usually have low IQs.
C.They don't have the ability to speak.
D.They can't speak in some situations.
29.What did the author need to do to get a horse?
A.Try to talk. B.Make a list of words.
C.Climb Mount Everest. D.Take medicine on time.
30.What's the purpose of Paragraph 6?
A.To show that the author enjoys riding horses.
B.To show that the author only speaks to horses.
C.To show that the author feels connected with horses.
D.To show that the author learned horses understand humans.

第二节:概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Protecting the world's forests is promoted as a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (排放物). But some researchers say conserving forests alone will not significantly reduce emissions.
It's estimated that protecting forests could prevent 77 billion tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere by the year 2100. Avoiding deforestation is a very important aspect in terms of carbon emission avoidance.
Indeed, emissions are reduced, but what we could observe is that there are now new emissions occurring from leakage effect and displacement effect. In other words, preserving forests means other types of land would be used to grow crops instead. That would result in environmental losses, losses of non?forest ecosystems that also have a high carbon content in the soil, in the vegetation, like wetlands savanna in Africa or grasslands, and also have a high biodiversity (生物多样性) content.
One way is to boost yields on existing farmlands. In sub?Sabaran Africa, there's much more potential for agricultural yields that we currently observe and much more potential for agricultural production.
Another way to meet future food needs is by reducing waste in agricultural production. Much food is lost through poor harvesting methods and lack of proper storage and transportation. Also, studies have shown food worth of billions of dollars is wasted every year in developed countries.
Given the lack of progress made in climate change negotiations, some scientists doubt their comprehensive (综合性的) approach will be adopted now. They said that “a more achievable approach” may be to protect non?forest areas that can store a lot of carbon and have good biodiversity. The Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation plan would have to be altered so funds can go to programs not related to forests.

(Text 6)

M:Well, my flight leaves at 10:30 in the morning.
W:Did you check in online already?
M:Yes, I checked in and I don't have any bags to check.
W:So we should leave by 9:00, so you can be there by 9:30.
M:It's an international flight.
W:Oh, so you need to be there two hours before your flight.
M:Can you get me to the airport by 8:30?

W:Hi, Bill. How's it going today?
M:Hi, Mom. It is really tiring walking around and seeing places.
W:Yes, I know.
M:I saw a ground floor apartment with four bedrooms today.
W:Four bedrooms? It sounds huge.
M:Yeah, it was. But the rent was quite cheap. And it was a nice place. A big living room with big windows. And the furniture was modern.
W:Sounds great. Did you take it?
M:Well, no. The place was shared. Three guys are looking for a fourth roommate. They seemed nice enough, but the place was a mess. It's a shame because the place is not bad, quite close to school.
W:Don't worry. Try to see more places tomorrow. Hopefully one of them will be alright. Or ask your classmates for more information.
(Text 9)
M:How do you usually get to work?
W:I drive.
M:I wish people would ride bikes more. Can you imagine how good that would be for the environment?
W:I know what you mean. But it's just so convenient to drive. Every day, I think I should take the subway, but I always end up driving.
M:Yes, but when everyone does that, it causes pollution.
W:Well, maybe if I sold my car, I would be able to change my habits. And think of all the money I could save on gas, insurance, and repairs.
M:Yeah, and you could get some exercise. I always ride my bike to work. I feel so healthy now that I needn't go to the gym.
W:It would be good to get back in shape. I'm so lazy now; I never walk anywhere.
M:Let's go to the used car market. I'll bet we could get a good price for your car.
W:Sounds good. But I have to drive to the supermarket for my weekly grocery shopping. Let's go after that.
(Text 10)
M:Hello everyone. My name is George Smith, from our college hospital. I've been asked to speak to you this afternoon on exercise. I guess most of what I'm going to say isn't new to you. However, I want you to take a fresh look at exercise.
I'm a runner myself. I got into it when I was 16, and I've been running for 27 years now. Every morning I get up and go out to the run for about 3 miles before having breakfast. It helps me a lot.
Is running the only sport that can help us? No. In fact, exercise of any kind seems to be the key to better health. Do a little exercise each day. A ten?minute walk is plenty to start you on the course to long?term exercise.
You should check with your doctor before you begin any hard exercise, especially if you're over 30 years old. If you choose to try running, increase your running distance every time you run.

Dear Tom,
Thanks for your e?mail last time. I'd like to tell you that I am now focusing my attention on American culture, especially American festivals.
When it comes to American festivals, what attracts me most is Thanksgiving Day. Since I have never spent the festival in America in person, I know little about it. I would appreciate it greatly if you could tell me something about it. My questions are as follows: How did it come into being? How and when do people celebrate it? What's its significance?
I hope you can give me assistance in these problems and thank you in advance.
Best wishes!
