One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not just for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound. Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. Construction of Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5, 1891.
The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E Simon. The building became very old and in 1960, the new owner made plans to destroy it and build an office block. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for $5 million. It was then fixed up between 1983 and 1995.
Advertisements and stories in newspapers about how Carnegie Hall needed help to recover its history led people to send in old concert programmes and information from all over the world. Over 12,000 concert programmes were received and with these it was possible to make a proper record of Carnegie Hall's concert history.
Carnegie Hall is actually made up of several different halls, but the Main Hall, now called the Isaac Stem Auditorium, is the most famous. The hall itself can hold an audience of 2,804 in five levels of seating.
Because the best and most famous musicians of all time have played at Carnegie Hall, it is the dream of most musicians who want to be great to play there. The summer before my dad died, we moved house. Up until that point, our family had our own space to spread out. Money was tight, so there was no television set, but we owned a turntable on which my dad's records played constantly. Mostly, it played Bob Dylan. Tracks from The Basement Tapes and Desire became an important part of our new life. My brother and I, aged 8 and 10, climbed trees, built hideaways and learned the words of Clothes Line Saga. We would chant over and over, lost in our own joy.
It was January when my dad left us forever because of the cancer. He was 36 going on 37 then, the same age as Dylan. Afterwards, our laughter disappeared, but we kept on playing the records, which became our only ritual of remembrance. The two men became so intertwined in my head, I struggled to tell them apart.
Dylan was my dad's gift to me. What child wouldn't be fascinated by songs full of pirates and seasick sailors? How did it feel to have No direction home? Farewell, Angelina became my party?piece. I would sing this at church cheese and wines to the assembled audience. A lot of donations were made.
Growing up, I remained a fan of the music, but I wasn't obsessed with Dylan until one day in early 1995, my brother bought us both tickets to see him play at Brixton Academy. London felt like a long way to go. But finally seeing Dylan step out onto the stage brought a sudden rush of excitement.
I have seen Dylan a couple of times since. My brother is not around so much these days. But he was up for a visit recently. We passed a happy evening laughing and drinking, while his son, aged nine, performed his party?piece Subterranean Homesick Blues for us. He sang it word?perfect. And so it goes on: Dylan's music as a gift, passed down the generations.
5.The underlined word “ritual” in the second paragraph means “________”.
A.passion B.ceremony
C.memory D.belief
6.How did the author raise money in his childhood?
A.By singing a Dylan's song at church gatherings.
B.By providing cheese and wines to church prayers.
C.By playing a private in church performances.
D.By accepting donations from the church.
7.The recent visit of the author's brother indicates that ________.
A.his nephew was ever invited to play in Dylan's concert
B.his brother has never seen a live performance of Dylan
C.Dylan's music has influenced three generations of his family
D.Subterranean Homesick Blues is always his favourite song
C
“Folk singers are more like poets than singers,” Li Yahe, a music businessman, once told China Youth Daily.
That saying perfectly describes Zhang Lei, the 34-year-old champion of the fourth “Voice of China” singing competition, which ended on Oct. 7.
Critics thought Zhang's success as a victory for folk singers. The Voice of China used to attach great importance to singing skills and vocal techniques, which are not necessarily what folk singers are good at. “Folk songs are more about emotions and storytelling,” said Li.
Folk is one of the oldest musical styles. It dates back to ancient times, when people sang about their everyday lives and the society around them.
A powerful comeback
Folk music became popular again in the Western world in the 1960s. During social revolutions, many young Westerners turned to the simple rhythms of folk. Pioneers included US singer Bob Dylan, whose songs are reflections of some social issues like the Vietnam War. Singers at that time used traditional folk instruments like the banjo, the upright bass, the mandolin and the piano.
In the late 1970s, folk music was introduced to Taiwan. The rise of singers like Lo Tayu and Chyi Yu popularized folk music, particularly among young Chinese people.
At that time, folk tunes were based on simple song structures, with pleasant chord progression and pretty lyrics, just like during old times. But they focused more on the dreams and sorrow of youth than on politics. This continued to be the case when the folk “wave” swept Chinese mainland in the 1990s.
Folk pioneers
Sadly, it didn't last long in China. Folk gave way to pop in the late 1990s, when people started living more fast-paced lives. But that didn't mean folk music had disappeared from the music world entirely.“The drop in the popularity of folk songs is because the business mode of the music industry is outdated, not because of the music itself,” folk singer Song Ke once said.
He was right. Recent years have seen folk songs gaining popularity, with the appearance of singers like Li Jian and Song Dongye.
“The popularity of the Internet has shocked the traditional profit model in music industry,” Lu Zhongqiang, manager of 13-Month, a music recording and publishing company, told Tencent Entertainment.
“Not-so-well-known music starts showing its strength when the production of mainstream music is declining,” he added.
8.What can we learn about folk music according to the passage?
A.The Voice of China focuses on folk music all the time.
B.Folk music once was a way to voice opinions about social issues.
C.Folk songs are more about expressing emotions than storytelling.
D.The widespread use of Internet is not good for folk music.
9.The underlined world “it” in the fourth paragraph from the bottom means________.
A.the popularity of folk music
B.the focus of folk music
C.the tradition of folk pioneers
D.the new model of pop music
10.Which word can best describe the attitude of Lu Zhongqiang towards folk music?
A.Objective. B.Confident.
C.Worried. D.Critical.

第二节 概要写作(25分)

Editor-in-chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour took part in a question and answer session during the Northern Youth Fashion Show at the University of York.
Vogue editor Anna Wintour has warned students not to allow social media to become a “substitute for living”. Ms Wintour was a special guest at the University of York's Northern Youth Fashion Show, which was organised by Ellie Wintour to raise money for refugee charities.
She made a speech ahead of the show in which she criticised the fame culture and told the audience to be “relevant, agile and educated”.
Ms Wintour described social media as an “incredible tool”, but added, “You don't want to spend your entire life clicking. I'm struck these days by how often people come up to me and ask to take a photograph, instead of shaking hands, meeting one's eyes and having an actual conversation. Even at the shows, people are so busy documenting the moment; they forget to actually look at the clothes in front of them. Social media is great but don't let it be a substitute for living.”
She also told the students they should not seek fame.
“To be famous these days with no backgrounds and no substances is not especially difficult,” she said. “I urge you to be relevant, agile and educated.”
Ms Wintour, who is editor-in-chief of American Vogue, advises the students to get experience and training in their chosen fields but not to become too specialised.
She said, “These days, in the world of media for instance, it is important to have multiple interests and have tried and possibly failed in many different careers. The young people we hire today at Conde Naste are fearless learners, hard-working and passionate, creative and curious.”
The show will raise money for the Xavier Project which runs schools, creates jobs and offers teachers to some of the biggest refugee communities in the world, and Refugee Action York which helps to improve refugees' life in the local areas.
