Clowns are almost everywhere these days in popular culture. They can be seen in movies, on television shows, at musical performances, and sometimes just walking in the streets. They have been making crowds laugh for generations. But what they represent in popular culture has changed a lot over the past 400 years.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the popularity of clowns grew because of television. Bozo the Clown appeared in a number of TV programs for children. Also in the 1960s, McDonald's, the fast-food business, chose a happy clown to appear in its advertisements. Today that company mascot, Ronald McDonald, is world famous.
In the 1980s, evil clowns began appearing in movies like Poltergeist (《鬼驱人》) and Killer Klowns from Outer Space (《外太空杀人小丑》). Then, in the autumn of 2016, many Americans began developing real concerns about clowns.
Starting in South Carolina, people reported seeing individuals wearing clown costumes, often hiding in the woods or in cities at night. Some people said the clowns were trying to lure (引诱) children into empty homes or the woods. Although there were usually no reports of violence, and many of the reported sightings were later found to be false, this caused a nation?wide panic.
For most people who work as clowns, their job is to make people happy and laugh. Lisa Long, a famous clown, says she is sure that clowns still have a bright future. “How often do you get a chance to really laugh or be silly and have fun? I think people are attracted to that, to the laughter. And what I do as a professional children's entertainer is I bring that, sometimes to children who may not have had a chance to even laugh that day or that week. And the opportunity to bring laughter—I think that's what attracts people to clowns.”
She adds that as long as there are still children in the world, there will still be a future for clowns.

The ancient city is in Pingyao County, Shanxi Province. The city wall was first built during the Zhou Dynasty. Since 1997, it has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Now Pingyao city is the only one in China completely protected as it was hundreds of years ago.
The perimeter (周长) of this square city is 6.4 km long and the city wall is the earliest and largest city wall in China. It is 12m high with the width of 5m. The wall was built with earth and covered with bricks. Outside the city wall there is a river, 4m wide and 4m deep.
There are several gates of the city, two each on the east and west and one each on the south and north side. All the gates have two doors each. This has given the city the name “Turtle City” with the two gates on the south and north standing for the head and tail of the turtle and four gates on the east and west as the four legs. The doors on the south and north stand opposite each other, like the head of the turtle extending out and two wells just beyond southern gate are like a turtle's two eyes.
Located on the trade route between Beijing and Xi'an, Pingyao developed into a merchant center where the local people set up the nation's earliest banks. These banks were the first in China to use checks.
Several old courtyards have been turned into museums, most of which were homes and offices of Pingyao's old banks. One of the most unusual aspects of a visit here is realizing that this place was very important to China's financial history.

第二节 概要写作(25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The origins of surnames are very interesting to talk about. It is helpful for us beginners to know about them in learning a foreign language.
In early times, when people lived in small villages, surnames were unnecessary. Everyone knew everyone else in the village and there were rarely visitors from outside. If someone referred to Stephen or Hilda, everyone knew at once who it was since there was only one Stephen or one Hilda in the village. But as time went on, tiny villages became big ones. Then there might be several Stephens and several Hildas in the same place. It then became necessary to tell one from another. How was this done?
One way of telling one Stephen from another was by adding the name of his trade. As a result, there might be Stephen the miller, Stephen the cook, Stephen the weaver and Stephen the shepherd. After a time these would be shortened to Stephen Miller, Stephen Cook, Stephen Weaver, etc., which gradually came into being. Before long, the same names were given to the men's children at birth and their wives took the same surnames on marriage.
Another way of distinguishing men with the same name was to refer to them by the name of the place where they lived. If three men were all called John, one might be referred to as John in the field, another as John in the woods, and the third as John under the hill. In this way surnames such as Field, Wood, Hill, Pond and Shore came into use.
Another important way of distinguishing men with the same name was to say whose sons they were. Of three men with the name of Tom, one might be called Tom the son of John, another Tom the son of William, and the third Tom the son of Richard. This practice gradually produced common surnames such as Johnson, Richardson, Robinson, Jackson and Wilson.
Still another way of distinguishing men was to give them nicknames according to the sort of person they were. Thus a very small man might be called John the small man. A very short one might come to be known as Stephen the short man. This gave rise to many surnames such as Short, Small, Long, White, Wise, Strong and Bright.
