4. Potato Days Festival
This festival actually takes place in Barnesville, Minnesota, the US. Over the last Friday and Saturday in August the town celebrates its potato-growing skills by hosting potato picking and peeling contests, as well as a Miss Tater Tot pageant (盛典) for five-and six-year-old girls.

To Rehan Staton, his childhood was a life of privilege―loving parents, a supportive big brother and a pleasant, private school education. Everything changed when his mother left the country and his father lost his job.
He had to sleep with a heavy jacket on when it was cold. He was always hungry. He said he couldn’t concentrate at school and would sleep during class. He went from straight-As to near the bottom of his class. A teacher told him he needed special education, which made him hate school.
Staton spent his high school years as an excellent athlete, training to become a professional boxer. He had won a lot of martial arts competitions. But a tragedy struck him in his senior year when Staton suffered serious tendonitis(肌腱炎) in both shoulders. He couldn’t lift either arm for months. His dream of becoming a professional player failed. He struggled to apply to colleges but was refused by all of them.
Staton’s body slowly recovered from martial arts and he got a job as a rubbish collector. Many co-workers couldn’t help but ask him a simple question, “What are you doing here? You’re smart. You are too young to be here. Go to college.” It was the first time someone outside his family had spoken highly of his intelligence. It was the co-workers that emboldened him to return to school.
Several co-workers put Staton in touch with a professor at Bowie State University. The professor was impressed with their conversation and persuaded the admissions board to change its former decision.
Going to college forced Staton’s older brother, Reggie, to drop out. They both knew someone had to be working full time along with their dad. It was a decision Reggie made on his own.
After receiving a 4.0, Staton succeeded in becoming a student at the University of Maryland. But he still had a long way to go to attend Harvard Law eventually...
24. What finally changed Rehan Staton’s happy childhood?
A. His brother’s losing the job. B. His serious health problem.
C. His father’s sudden death. D. His mother’s leaving the country.
25. What does the underlined word “emboldened” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Force. B. Direct. C. Encourage. D. Accompany.
26. Why did Staton’s elder brother have to drop out of school?
A. He wanted his brother to study further. B. His father asked him to leave school.
C. He had lost interest in most lessons. D. He had to go out to find his mother.
27. What will the writer mainly talk about next?
A.What Rehan Staton planned to do after entering Harvard.
B. How Rehan Staton managed to be admitted to Harvard.
C. Why Rehan Staton decided to choose to go to Harvard.
D. When Rehan Staton would be successful in Harvard Law.

Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese?style spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show's popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet(字母). The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It's possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there's still hope for the paint brush. China's Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six?year?olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher's examples before carefully trying to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. "If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?" we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. "The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture," she reasons. "Students must learn now so they don't forget when they grow up." says the teacher.
28. What can we learn about the Character Hero?
A. It draws great public attention across the country.
B. It's the most?viewed TV programs in the world.
C. It means to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D. It's open to people of all ages and all walks.
29.Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A .Chinese people don't refer to dictionaries very often.
B .Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C .Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D .Chinese people needn't write by hand as often with the help of technology.
30. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ____________.
A .necessary for adults to survive in Chin.
B .a requirement made by the Education Ministry.
C .helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive.
D .an ability to be developed only when you are students.
31.Where does this text probably come from?
A. A science report. B. A news report. C. Children’s literature. D. An advertisement.

Did you ever have to say “no” to somebody? Such as a classmate who asks to go to lunch with you? New research suggests that, at least socially, a rejection (拒绝) should not include an apology. In other words, saying you are sorry does not make the person being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected person feel worse. That is surprising. Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.
Gili Freedman is doing some related research at Dartmouth College. For her research, she asked over 1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection. In one example, the researchers asked people for their reaction (反应) after a person named Taylor asked to join a co-worker who went out to lunch every Friday. And Taylor was told “no”. But in some cases, the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology. In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry. People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was. Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.
Freedman said the reason is that apologies make people feel like they need to say that the rejection was okay - even when they felt like it was not okay. Rejection without an apology lets them express their feelings of disappointment, hurt or anger more easily. Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better - even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse.
Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. “If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job,” Freedman said, “reactions to apologies may be different.”
32. Why do people say they are sorry when they express rejection?
A. Because they think it helps them express their dislike better.
B. Because they think it is more polite.
C. Because they think apologies are the basis of communication.
D. Because they think it sounds more comfortable for the listener.
33. In Gili Freedman’s research, over 1,000 people __________.
A. rejected others without an apology
B. offered an apology when rejecting others
C. were asked to answer the question in different situations
D. would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology
34. What role does an apology play in rejection?
A. It makes the rejection more acceptable.
B. It makes a good impression on the listener.
C. It makes the person doing the rejecting feel better.
D. It makes the communication more pleasant.
35. What will be mentioned next according to the last paragraph?
A. The effect of an apology during a rejection.
B. Gili Freedman’s research on business situations.
C. The difference between a social situation and a business one.
D. A rejection with an apology in a business situation.
三、 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Do you have a place you’ve always wanted to visit? If the answer is yes, have you ever considered taking a trip alone there just for a few days?
36 Although seeing the world on their own has always been a dream in their hearts since childhood, most people have repeatedly been told that the outside world is dangerous. The thought of going on a trip alone excites and terrifies them at the same time. Few end up stepping out of their comfort zone and going on meaningful adventures.
It is normal to have some trouble traveling alone. 37 For example, being alone on the road, you might have to ask strangers to take your photo wherever you go. If you join a tour halfway, you may be asked why you don’t have friends or family around. 38
First, traveling alone gives you a good opportunity to do everything you wish to do without worrying about others’ needs and wants. If you want, you can read on a bench beside a river for the whole afternoon without being disturbed (打扰). You are free to walk around on different streets. 39 You can also remove that dull daily routine (常规) that always makes you feel tired.
If you make good use of it, traveling alone can also be a wonderful journey of self-discovery, as you’ll finally have time to think about your life.
40 All you need to do is to pack your bags, take your passport, gather up your courage and go somewhere. Go out and enjoy being alone, explore the unknown, make some friends, read a book, and get to know more about yourself and the world.
A. Traveling by yourself is also quite easy.
B. You can go to shopping malls and explore the city.
C. For many people, traveling alone can be frightening.
D. There are also some unpleasant moments one might run into.
E. It is important to take some time off and think about the methods.
F. But anyhow, I still suggest that you travel alone at least once in your life.
G. Traveling alone helps us figure out what we really want to fight for in this big world.

How are you doing? Knowing that you are a lover of Chinese painting, I am writing to tell you something about the Chinese painting exhibition held in our school.
As scheduled, the event took place on April 20th in our school hall. Some experts were present and gave lectures of some well-known artists, through which we had a good understanding of the Chinese painting. Some paintings made by students were on display, which was a feat for us. Every student present could feel the beauty of the Chinese painting, benefiting a lot from the activity. Had you attended, you would certainly know more about Chinese art.
Hopefully, you can join us next year.
