After 16 years in the United States, I traveled to the city in Russia where I grew up. I was the first in my family to return after all those years. My mom gave me a hand?drawn map showing where my grandfather's tomb was at the local cemetery (公墓), and she asked me to visit it. He was still very much alive in her mind, and she wanted him to continue to live in my mind as well.
I promised that the first thing I'd do when I arrived would be to visit the cemetery. However, I got caught up in work, and had a lot of catching up to do with my childhood friends. It wasn't until a day before I was leaving that I found time to go to the cemetery.
It was late in the afternoon, and just by the entrance was a lady who was selling flowers. By then she had only seven carnations left. I bought them all, but when reaching for my wallet, I realized I didn't have the map with me. I had no idea where my grandfather's tomb was. I could call my mom and ask her, but the problem was that I'd already told her I'd gone there.
So I found the main office. Behind the counter was an old woman, and she helped me find my grandfather's records. It turned out there were 17 Abraham Pikarski there. I chose the two whose age I believed closely matched my grandfather's.
I set off to look for them. I hoped that at least one would have a photo on the tombstone. This way I'd know which tomb was my grandfather's.
I found the first tomb and it said Abraham Pikarski on it, but there was no photo. Only an inscription (碑文) : From the Loving Wife and Children.
I had no idea whether this was the right one, so I went off to look for the other one. It was actually similar to the first one. Only the inscription was slightly different. It said: From the Grieving (悲痛的) Family.
Was my family “the loving” one or “the grieving” one?

Finally I decided to put the last flower on the second tomb where I was just standing.

I grew up on a small farm in northern Michigan. We had about fifty head of cows at any given time, and it was my task in the morning to help my father milk them before he left for his work as a high school teacher. My brothers and sisters joined in the milking again after we came home from school. I loved the farm, and I loved the service of milking. I was the oldest of five children, but this early morning task was something I did alone with my father, whom I have always adored.
Each morning the cows would wait patiently outside the barn (牲口棚) for the milking. Dad and I would drive them inside, six at a time, milk them and then drive them back out of the other side of the barn through a different door. As we tied them up to the milking equipment, I would think about my day and my life.
It was usually dark and often cold — sometimes extremely cold — but the cows' steaming breath always warmed me up. It was a fine way to start a day. Cows must be milked twice a day, no matter what. If they aren't milked, they can get mastitis (乳腺炎), a not uncommon infection (感染), for which they need antibiotics (抗生素). This makes a cow's milk unusable until she recovers. Even when a cow is sick, however, she has to be milked, and that milk cannot be consumed or sold. It must be poured out.
One Sunday when I was sixteen, my family was away for the day. Night milking needed to be done, and I'd have to do it by myself. Five cows had mastitis and were on antibiotics. Each cow had a number attached to her ear, and Dad had given me a list of the five infected cows' numbers. I would need to pour out the milk from those cows. The best way to do all this was to separate the infected cows from the rest of the herd and then milk every one.
At low light, I headed for the barn.

So I just didn't separate the mastitis milk from the rest.

There was once a boy in ragged clothes running to ask a building contractor who wore elegant clothes in a construction site of a skyscraper (摩天大楼), “How could I become as rich as you when I grow up?”
With a glance at the boy, the tall and strongbuild contractor replied, “I would like to tell you a story first about three diggers. The first digger liked holding a spade (锹) without doing anything but saying that he wanted to be a boss in the future. The second digger liked complaining about the longtime work and his low salary. The third digger always quietly devoted himself to digging without making any claims. Several years later, the first digger was still holding his spade in the original place and the second took an excuse of work injury for early retirement. Only the third digger became the boss of the building company. Do you understand the moral of this story? Just go to buy a red shirt and work hard.”
The little boy was puzzled and could not figure out the implication of the story. So he asked the contractor to explain further. Pointing to the builders who were working on the scaffold (脚手架), the contractor talked to the little boy, “Look at those people! They are all my workers. I can't remember all of their names, and even I have no impression of some of them. But if you look carefully, you will notice a sunburned man in red among them. I notice him very early. He seems to be working harder with higher spirits than others. He is always the first one to work every day while the last one to leave. It is exactly his red shirt that makes him stand out among all the workers. Now I am about to ask him to be my taskmaster and I believe he will work even much harder from now on. Maybe he will soon be promoted to my assistant.”
The contractor told the boy that was also how he had got where he was then.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Workaholics live for their work, often spending many extra hours at work, and often taking work home to complete. It's fine to live in a workhard culture, but when work becomes the only reason for a person's existence above more important things (such as family and friends), the issue becomes critical. That's the problem more and more Americans are faced with.
Americans are working more hours per week than in years past, and with many companies reducing employees, more and more workers are worried about their own jobs. Some studies show that as many as 40 percent of American workers don't even bother to take vacations, partly because of fears they may not have a job to come back to if they do. Besides, it is obvious that part of the matter is financial. More and more people begin to define success in terms of financial measures. The higher one's income is, the more respect one gets. Finally, people nowadays live and work in a connected environment — emails, instant messaging, fax machines, and cell phones — making it hard for them to truly get time away from their work, even when they are on holiday.
When work becomes the only reason for being — when it becomes the only thing people think about, the only thing that truly makes people happy, many Americans find that they are no longer close to their kids. The divorce rate jumps and serious stressrelated health problems come up. Undoubtedly, it is time to do something.
To reduce workaholism, you must stay away from work once in a while. There are many ways to do that: Spend time with family and friends; Call home often to stay connected; Learn to say no to new assignments; Consider exercises to get your body back to a healthy shape; Fight the urge that everything you do must be perfect. It will take some effort, but for yourself and those you love, you really should make the effort. Have a try and you won't regret it.

A young and successful manager had a new Jaguar, whose side* door was dented (凹陷的). The damage was very noticeable, but the manager never bothered to repair it. He kept the dent there to remind him of one afternoon as well as this message: Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!
The manager was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new. Jaguar. He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick crashed into the Jag's side door! He braked sharply and drove the Jag backward to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, “What was that all about and who are you?”
The young boy apologized. "Please mister ... please, I’m sorry. . . I didn't know what else to do," he begged.
“I threw the brick because no one else would stop. . ." With tears corning down his face, the little boy pointed to a spot just around a parked car.
“My elder brother fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up. he said.

参考答案:
A
Was my family “the loving” one or “the grieving” one? I was standing there waiting, thinking maybe I'd feel some special feeling, and close relationship with the right person lying there. I put three carnations on that tomb, and I went back to the first one. Again I was hoping to feel something special. But it was getting late, so I put three carnations there, too. I stood there with the last flower in my hand. I wandered, thinking which Abraham Pikarski should it go to.
Finally I decided to put the last flower on the second tomb where I was just standing. It would be good if I chose the right one. ①But if not, then let this visit be a comfort to the stranger. Seeing me back, my mom was so happy that I really paid a visit to my grandfather. ②She knew it because her cousin in Russia had called and told her that he had just come from the cemetery and seen my flowers there. Should I ask her how many flowers her cousin saw? But then I decided not to.
B
At low light, I headed for the barn. There were the fifty head of cows, all crowded together, all waiting for me to milk them. Getting five infected cows out of this herd was going to be difficult. First I'd have to walk in among them and read their numbers to find the right five cows. Then I'd need to throw a lead rope somehow to get each one of them out of there and drove them into the room without the other cows getting out. How I wished my families were there to help. It seemed to be too difficult a task for me to finish by myself.
So I just didn't separate the mastitis milk from the rest. That evening, my father made me throw away the entire day's milking by myself. I cried bitterly when I poured out it. Dad wasn't unkind; he simply wanted me never again to forget this important and expensive detail. And I never forget.

C
The contractor told the boy that was also how he had got where he was then. Actually the building contractor had once worked hard and outperformed others through his own constant efforts. If he had worn the same shirt just like other workers and hadn't devoted himself to working, by no means would he have been noticed by his boss. As a matter of fact he wore his red shirt every day and worked arduously. Soon his day came. He obtained his boss's appreciation and was then promoted as taskmaster. After he had earned enough money, he became a boss eventually.
After hearing his words, the boy thought a lot. He knew that if he wants to stand out among people, there is no shortcut or alternative but hard work. Actually the contractor's experience was just one good example to prove the truth of it. Then the boy thanked the contractor for his reply and said goodbye to him. When he left the construction site of the skyscraper he already had a firm resolution in his mind that he would start his own journey right then in order to fulfill his dream in time.
