Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”
He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there, telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this really made me curious, so one day I called on Jerry and asked him, “I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?” Jerry replied,“ Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me, complaining, I can choose to accept his or her complaint or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.”
“Yeah, but anyway it's not that easy,” I argued.
“Yes it is,” Jerry said. “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life.”
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. Although we don't meet often since then, we still keep in touch.
One day, I was suddenly told that Jerry was sent to hospital.

A young man had bought an old house that was in bad shape, but he and his wife believed they could restore it. They immediately went to work. Their goal was to have the old building look best for New Year's Eve gettogether.
Just two days before New Year, however, a storm swept through the area, leaving a hole in the wall of the house. There was obviously no time to repair the damage before New Year. The sad couple attended a local auction (拍卖) that afternoon. One of the items put up for bids was an old goldandivorycolored tablecloth. Seized by an inspiration, the young man was the highest bidder at $ 6.50. His idea was to hang the cloth to cover the ragged hole.
On the day before New Year, it was snowy. As the young man unlocked the house door, he noticed an old woman standing at the bus stop. He knew the bus wouldn't be there within at least half an hour, so he invited her inside to keep warm.
When the woman walked in and saw the tablecloth, she rushed at it and said excitedly, “It's mine. It is my tablecloth.” She told the surprised man its history and even showed him her name in one corner of the tablecloth. She and her husband had once lived in Vienna, Austria, and their village was hit by a deadly disease. So they decided to flee to Switzerland, but her husband told her to leave first, saying he had something urgent to deal with. A few days later, it was reported that the bus her husband took fell off the cliff (悬崖) and he was never to be found. Her husband was believed to have died. Touched by her story, the young man asked about her address, planning to send the tablecloth to her after New Year. As the bus came, she left.
In the candlelight of New Year's Eve, the tablecloth looked even more beautiful. As the man's friends left the house, they thanked the man for his arrangement and mentioned how beautiful the house looked.
One old gentleman stayed, admiring the tablecloth

“Every cloud has a silver lining.” It drives me crazy when Mom says nonsense (废话) like that.
I'd barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blown up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn't help herself, “Every cloud has a silver lining, you know, sweetheart.” “Mom, I appreciate the thought, but I'm not ready to look on the bright side of this.” We hadn't even left the school parking lot yet.
On the farthest side of the field, I could see my teammates doing sprint training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He'd mercifully helped me to the car in silence. Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing.
As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito's pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that... When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I'd cried from the pain, but I was crying out of self-pity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this. I told myself there was a glimmer (微光) of hope that everything would turn out okay, and that I'd make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast. Mom gave me a weak smile. “It'll be okay, Casey.” I suspected this was another version of the silverlining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass.
We finally arrived at the hospital. Doctor Van gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it. I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run. “Four weeks maybe, possibly five,” he replied. “And even then, you'll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible?” he asked with a smile.
I couldn't answer. __

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray (流浪的) dog, until he came to me.
I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.
It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?
I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he became dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.
The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest. “Shall we keep him with us?” I questioned my mom.
Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.
Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.
One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.

On a steamy morning in July, Clay and Acaimie Chastain arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, ready to spend a day of their honeymoon climbing Mount Liamuiga. The highest point on St. Kitts, Liamuiga is also a dormant (休眠的) volcano that starts in the clouds and plunges down to meet the sea.
They couldn't find a visitor centre or hire a guide, so they set off on their own. They reached the peak around noon and ate their sandwiches looking out over the ocean and surrounding islands.
That's when Clay saw it: a small trail that led into the volcano's crater(坑), a bowl of green with cloud forest giving way to green grass. A series of screw eyes(螺钉孔) had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down. Clay wanted to go down and take some pictures. Acaimie followed him a little way, but she was very cautious and quite scared of heights; so Clay went on alone.
A few minutes later, she heard a crash—a noise that sounded like a large branch snapping, followed by the sound of something big rolling downhill. “Clay?” she called. Silence.
Uneasy, she waited a minute and shouted again—still nothing. And then, from somewhere much further down, she heard a weak cry for help. This time she was certain: It was Clay calling for help from deep within the crater.
As she looked over the lip of the volcano, she tried to stop some of her worst worries. Her phone wasn't getting a signal, and her cries for help were met with only silence. “Clay!" she shouted as loud as she could. "Clay, are you OK?”
Acaimie grasped the rope and began climbing down the trail. When the path became too steep, she slid on her butt, her legs and arms getting bruised and scraped in the process. Then, just off the trail, she saw a flash of red. It was Clay's scarf. And next to it was his cell phone.
She grabbed both and continued down, screaming for Clay all the way.
“Help," he said in that strange voice.
"I'm coming! Stay where you are,” she said.

参考答案:
A
One day, I was suddenly told that Jerry was sent to hospital. I immediately rushed to the hospital to visit him. Jerry was lying calmly on the bed. Seeing me come into the ward, he greeted me with a smile. When I asked what happened, he told me he was held up by three robbers. They asked him to open the safe, but he didn't hesitate to turn down their request, saying firmly that he would by no means do that. The robbers had no other alternative but to hit him with sticks violently and leave the restaurant unwillingly.
After hearing his story about the robbery, I was quite surprised how he could still remain so optimistic. I asked him how he was. He replied, “If I were any better, I'd be twins.” How could he still remain so positive even after such a terrible event? It seemed that he had read my mind and said, “When I lay on the operating table, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or to die. I chose to live. So I lived owing to my choice.” I learned from his words that every day we have the choice to live fully.
B
One old gentleman stayed, admiring the tablecloth. At the same time, he said to the young man, “What a coincidence. Many years ago my wife and I also owned such a tablecloth. But we lived in Vienna then.” On hearing these words, the young man told the old man about his encounter with the old woman in the house that snowy day. “Can it be true that she is alive?” asked the old man, tears streaming down his cheeks. “How can I find her?” Fortunately, the young man remembered her address.
The young man drove the old man to that old woman's home. Together they knocked on her apartment door. When she opened it, both of them recognized each other immediately. Obviously, they were too surprised and excited to express themselves. With trembling hands, they hugged tightly. “I was told you had died. How did you find me?” the old woman said. “Thanks to that magical tablecloth,” the old man replied. The young man witnessed the tearful, joyful and thrilling reunion of the husband and wife.

I couldn't answer. Five weeks meant little chance for me to the track meet. Looking down at my swollen foot, I wept bitter tears, knowing my last glimmer of hope was fading. As usual, Mom patted me on the shoulder and said with a smile, “Sweetheart, every cloud...” “No...” I interrupted her impatiently. Life seemed dull and meaningless, but touched by Mom's great help, I regained my confidence and was back on my feet. Amazingly, I began to practice running soon.
One month later, I made my appearance on the field. All my teammates were absolutely astonished at my quick recovery, not believing their eyes. “Oh, boy! What a miracle!” My coach Zito looked at me in disbelief. To tell them everything was okay, I kicked, jumped and ran in front of them. Seeing this, they all burst out laughing. Later, I went to practice with them and participated in the track meet. From then on, whenever I encountered difficulties, Mom's encouraging words “Every cloud has a silver lining” always rang in my ears.

One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg. I called out my mother and she quickly tied a bandage around his leg and gave him food to eat. I was very upset. But the next day, Spotty was up to his usual games though his leg was injured. After this incident my relation with Spotty became more intense. I really admired him for his courage.
Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly. We came out and saw that he was barking continuously heading somewhere. After some time Spotty became quiet. The next morning, my heart skipped a beat when I didn't see Spotty. I searched for him in each and every corner but he was nowhere. I cried and waited for him but there were no signs of him. What would have happened to Spotty? Would he have died? These were the only questions in my mind, but they all remained unanswered forever.
E
Finally, she spotted Clay. Lying on his back, Clay moaned bitterly. His trousers were torn to pieces and splashed with blood, which immediately brought tears to her eyes. Heartbroken as she was, Acaime bandaged his wounds carefully with the scarf. It was four o’clock now! Fear crept upon her heart — what if a wolf appeared out of nowhere? what if they were starved to death?...“Honey, we need to find a new way out before the sun sets.” Clay’s voice awakened her.
Acaimie had to push those thoughts away and focus on what could do. “Right! The rope couldn’t stand our weight.” She looked around only to find something glimmering in the deepest forest. She approached it in curiosity. God! What a big tunnel to the outside! She dashed back and told Clay her discovery, her voice trembling with excitement. She held Clay by the arm and led him to the entrance, edging their way through the tunnel. It took them a century to finish such a long journey. What met them were the final sunrays, in which they hugged tightly in tears. It must be love that got them through the darkest time.
