I’ve
loved
my
mother’s
desk
since
I
was
just
tall
enough
to
see
above
the
top
of
it
as
mother
sat
doing
letters.
Standing
by
her
chair,
looking
at
the
ink
bottle,
pens
and
white
paper,
I
decided
that
the
act
of
writing
must
be
the
most
wonderful
thing
in
the
world.
Years
later,
during
her
final
illness,
mother
kept
different
things
for
my
sister
and
brother.
“But
the
desk,”
she
said
again,
“is
for
Elizabeth.”
I
never
saw
her
angry
or
cry.
I
knew
she
loved
me;
she
showed
it
in
action.
But
as
a
young
girl,
I
wanted
heart-to-heart
talks
between
mother
and
daughter.
They
never
happened.
And
a
gulf
opened
between
us.
I
was
“too
emotional”.
But
she
lived
“on
the
surface”.
As
years
passed
and
I
had
my
own
family.
I
loved
my
mother
and
thanked
her
for
our
happy
family.
I
wrote
to
her
in
careful
words
and
asked
her
to
let
me
know
in
any
way
she
chose
that
she
did
forgive
me.
I
posted
the
letter
and
waited
for
her
answer,
but
none
came.
My
hope
turned
to
disappointment,
then
little
interest
and,
finally,
peace.
It
seemed
that
nothing
happened.
I
couldn’t
be
sure
that
the
letter
had
even
got
to
Mother.
I
only
knew
that
I
had
written
it,
and
I
could
stop
trying
to
make
her
into
someone
she
was
not.
Now
the
present
of
her
desk
told
me,
as
she’d
never
been
able
to,
that
she
was
pleased
that
writing
was
my
chosen
work.
I
cleaned
the
desk
carefully
and
found
some
papers
inside
—
a
photo
of
my
father
and
a
one-page
letter,
folded
and
refolded
many
times.
Give
me
an
answer,
my
letter
asks,
in
any
way
you
choose.
Mother,
you
always
chose
the
act
that
speaks
louder
than
words.

Most
scientists
are
now
certain
that
global
warming
is
taking
place.
Gases
such
as
carbon
dioxide
are
creating
a
warm
blanket
around
the
earth.
This
blanket
is
trapping
heat
in
the
atmosphere,
and
so
raising
the
temperature
of
the
earth.
In
Europe,
eight
of
the
last
ten
years
have
seen
record
high
temperatures.
On
the
other
hand,
the
countries
around
the
Mediterranean
Sea
are
receiving
even
less
rain
than
before.
In
Sub-
Saharan
Africa
the
crops
are
drying
out
in
the
fields
and
people
are
dying
of
starvation.
In
1999,
the
southern
United
States
was
struck
by
a
serious
of
destructive
hurricanes.
Scientists
expect
such
trends
to
continue,
and
to
worsen,
if
global
warming
cannot
be
stopped.
In
addition
to
worrying
about
rising
global
temperatures
and
extreme
weather
conditions,
scientists
are
closely
monitoring
sea
levels
around
the
world.
They
are
slowly
rising,
as
the
northern
and
southern
polar
ice
caps
start
to
melt.
This
will
have
serious
consequences
for
low-lying
countries
near
the
sea.
Already
parts
of
these
places
are
disappearing
under
the
rising
sea
water.
According
to
a
new
research,
one
contradictory
feature
of
global
warming
is
that
it
will
probably
lead
to
a
period
of
much
colder
weather.
Scientists
base
their
theory
on
what
happened
the
last
time
the
world
warmed
up,
8,300
years
ago.
They
have
discovered
that
when
the
ice
melted
from
the
northern
polar
ice
cap
it
became
trapped
in
a
lake
in
northern
Canada.
As
more
ice
melted,
this
lake
suddenly
burst
open,
pouring
millions
of
tons
of
freezing
fresh
water
into
the
North
Atlantic.
This
flood
of
water
prevented
the
normal
flow
of
water
in
the
Atlantic,
which
takes
warm
water
from
the
tropics
(热带地区)
north
to
Europe.
When
this
flow
of
warm
water
was
cut
off,
temperatures
in
Europe
dropped
by
between
three
and
eight
degrees
over
the
next
200
years.
''That's
the
concern
here,''
says
Richard
Alley,
an
American
climate
expert.
''The
climate
hasn't
varied
much
in
8,000
years.
But
big
changes
could
come
back!''
What
is
the
overall
effect
of
global
warming
on
Europe?
A
warmer
climate.
A
decline
in
rainfall.
An
increase
of
hurricanes.
A
decrease
of
crop
production.
9.
What
is
Paragraph
3
mainly
about?
A.
The
rising
sea
level.
B.
The
melting
of
icebergs.
C.
The
increase
in
disasters.
D.
The
cause
of
global
warming.
10.
How
does
the
author
describe
the
climate
change
in
Europe
8,300
years
ago?
A.
By
making
comments.
B.
By
giving
an
example.
C.
By
making
comparisons.
D.
By
analyzing
the
process.
11.
What
can
we
infer
from
Richard
Alley'
s
words?
A.
Global
climate
change
will
bring
more
disasters.
B.
Global
warming
is
likely
to
produce
a
colder
climate.
C.
Global
warming
will
continue
for
the
next
two
centuries.
D.
Global
climate
will
remain
unchangeable
in
the
next
8,
000
years.
D
Over
a
four-year
period,
Swiss
researchers
have
developed
a
machine
that
can
keep
human
livers
(肝)
alive
outside
of
the
body
for
one
week.
Livers
are
among
the
most
commonly
transplanted
(移植)
human
organs.
Current
technology
can
only
keep
human
livers
alive
for
up
to
24
hours.
It
is
reported
that,
in
2017,
about
8,
000
liver
transplants
were
performed
in
the
U.S.,
of
which
360
used
livers
from
living
givers.
In
addition,
about
11,500
people
were
registered
on
a
waiting
list
to
receive
a
liver
transplant.
Keeping
livers
alive
and
functioning
for
longer
periods
could
greatly
improve
the
chances
of
survival
for
patients.
The
researchers
say
the
purpose
of
their
“Liver4Life”
machine
is
to
perform
what
they
call
liver
perfusion
(灌注)
operations
outside
of
the
human
body.
Perfusion
is
the
process
by
which
blood
or
other
liquids
are
pumped
through
organs
and
tissue.
The
machine
keeps
the
liver
at
the
right
temperature
and
moves
it
in
a
way
that
would
be
natural
in
the
body.
Using
a
pump
to
fill
the
liver
with
blood
acting
like
a
human
heart,
the
machine
also
provides
oxygen
to
the
organ,
controls
red
blood
cell
levels
and
removes
waste.
The
research
team
began
their
experiments
with
livers
from
pigs.
After
repeated
testing
and
engineering
development,
they
succeeded
in
getting
the
pig
livers
to
survive
for
seven
days
with
support
only
provided
from
the
Liver4Life
machine.
They
also
discovered
the
system
can
work
to
repair
damaged
livers.
The
team
is
now
planning
its
next
step
to
transplant
machine-treated
organs
into
patients.
Pierre-Alain
Clavien,
leader
of
the
research,
said
in
a
statement.
“This
technology
will
greatly
increase
the
number
of
livers
available
for
transplant,
improving
the
chances
of
survival
for
patients.
The
success
of
this
unique
machine
opens
the
way
for
many
new
applications
in
transplantation
and
cancer
medicine.”

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余项。
Eyes
can
speak
Much
meaning
can
be
conveyed,
clearly,
with
our
eyes,
so
it
is
often
said
that
eyes
can
speak.
16
In
a
bus
you
may
look
at
a
stranger,
but
not
for
too
long.
And
if
he
senses
that
you
are
staring
at
him,
he
may
feel
uncomfortable.
The
same
is
true
in
our
daily
life.
If
you
are
stared
at
for
more
than
necessary,
you
will
look
at
yourself
up
and
down
to
see
if
there
is
anything
wrong
with
you.
17
Eyes
do
speak,
right?
Looking
too
long
at
someone
may
seem
to
be
rude
and
aggressive.
18
If
a
man
stares
at
a
woman
for
more
than
10
seconds
and
refuses
to
look
away
from
her,
his
intentions
are
obvious.
He
wishes
to
attract
her
attention
and
let
her
know
that
he
is
admiring
her.
However,
when
two
people
are
engaged
in
a
conversation,
the
speaker
will
only
look
into
the
listener’s
eyes
from
time
to
time
to
make
sure
that
the
listener
does
pay
attention
to
what
the
former
is
speaking.
19
If
a
speaker
looks
at
you
continuously
when
speaking
as
if
trying
to
control
you,
you
will
feel
awkward.
A
poor
liar
usually
exposes
himself
by
looking
too
long
at
the
victim.
He
wrongly
believes
that
looking
straight
in
the
eye
is
a
sign
of
honest
communication.
20
Actually,
eye
contact
should
be
made
based
on
specific
relationships
and
situations.
A.
On
the
contrary,
it
will
give
him
away.
B.
Do
you
have
such
kind
of
experience?
C.
That’s
what
normal
eye
contact
is
all
about.
D.
Therefore,
continuous
eye
contact
is
limited
to
lovers
only.
E.
After
all,
nobody
likes
to
be
stared
at
for
quite
a
long
time.
F.
But
things
are
different
when
it
comes
to
staring
at
the
opposite
sex.
G.
If
nothing
goes
wrong,
you
will
feel
annoyed
at
being
stared
at
that
way.

W:
They

M:
I

They’re
like
us,
I

They

they

You’re

W:
So,
why
exactly
does
your
job
have
a
reputation
for
being
stressful?
M:
Stress
is
generally
driven
by
the
feeling
of
being
out
of
control
of
a
situation,
and
the
feeling
of
a
situation
controlling
you.
Trading
in
financial
markets
combines
both.
W:
How
do
you
relax
in
the
evening?
M:
I
very
rarely
do
anything
work
related.
So
it’s
easy
to
escape
the
markets.
I
generally
go
to
the
gym
or
go
for
a
run,
especially
if
I’ve
had
a
bad
day.
I
always
cook
a
meal
rather
than
have
a
take
-
away,
to
do
something
my
brain
would
regard
as
creative.
W:
Do
you
think
what
you
do
to
relax
is
an
effective
way
to
beat
stress?
M:
I
don’t
think
there’s
a
specific
rule
about
how
to
beat
stress.
I
generally
find
that
what
I
do
is
effective
for
me.
W:
Would
you
consider
changing
your
job
because
of
the
high
stress
factor?
M:
I
have
considered
leaving
my
job
due
to
stress
-
related
factors.
However,
I
do
think
that
an
element
of
stress
is
a
good
thing,
and
if
used
the
right
way,
(it)
can
actually
be
a
positive
thing.
W:
What
do
you
enjoy
about
the
stressful
aspects
of
your
job?
M:
Having
said
all
that,
I
do
actually
enjoy
an
element
of
uncertainty.
I
enjoy
a
mental
challenge.
Trading
generates
a
wide
range
of
emotions
second
by
second.
How
you
deal
with
and
manage
those
emotions
dictates

M:
When
I
was
young
I
dreamed
of
being
a
famous
painter.
I
was
so
crazy
about
painting
that
I
painted
any
time
everywhere.
My
mother
was
often
mad
at
me
when
she
saw
my
paintings
everywhere
on
the
walls
in
our
house.
She
always
hoped
that
I
could
be
a
doctor.
I
guess
she
wanted
me
to
follow
my
father’s
footsteps.
My
father,
however,
expected
me
to
become
a
photographer.
He
even
bought
me
a
camera
and
all
kinds
of
professional
books
and
encouraged
me
to
attend
youth
photo
contests.
However,
as
you
can
see,
boys
and
girls,
I
finally
became
a
teacher.
Life
is
unpredictable.
Sometimes
you
may
not
achieve
the
dreams
you
once
had
in
your
childhood.
But
it
doesn’t
matter.
And
it
doesn’t
mean
you’ll
have
to
give
up
your
dreams.
You
can
always
leave
your
dream
in
your
heart
and
keep
it
as
a
lifetime
hobby.
As
for
me,
I
am
still
good
at
painting.
It’s
a
great
way
to
relax
in
my
spare
time.
I
also
love
photography
and
travelling.
All
my
friends
like
the
photos
I
take
for
them.
判断
Color
plays
an
essential
role
in
our
life.
For
example,
color
is
used
to
communicate
life-saving
information.
To
the
driver
of
a
vehicle,
the
green
color
means
go
and
the
red
color
means
stop.
You
should
always
pull
up
when
the
traffic
lights
turn
red.
Besides,
colors
can
irritate
your
eyes,
increase
your
appetite,
or
even
change
your
mood.
A
delicious
meal
with
appropriate
colors
can
certainly
make
your
mouth
water.
Good
colors
also
help
us
in
many
other
ways.
Statistics
show
that
in
a
sports
competition
a
team
wearing
red
has
a
higher
chance
of
winning.
Of
course,
it
is
largely
due
to
the
psychology
of
wearing
red.
Luck
and
ability
can
be
more
important.
For
animals,
colors
reflect
their
environment
and
their
characteristics.
For
instance,
a
male
peacock
has
its
tail
feathers
of
bright
colors
to
win
the
attention
of
female
peacocks.
People
often
think
that
a
rainbow
is
the
most
colorful,
but
for
our
artists,
all
they
need
are
three
colors,
namely,
red,
blue
and
yellow.
They
are
called
the
primary
colors,
colors
that
can
not
be
made
by
mixing
others
together.
And
our
artists
can
mix
them
together
to
create
any
color
in
the
rainbow
and
hundreds
of
other
shades
in
making
art..
