Teaching goals:
Knowledge aims:
Ss will be able to master the following useful new words and expressions.

fresh,organize,bury, at an end, dig out, coal mine, in ruins
2. Ss will be able to know the basic knowledge about Earthquake

3)Emotional aims:
Ss will be able to know damages earthquake bring about and the ways to reduce losses of an earthquake.
Ss will be able to know how to protect oneself and help others in earthquakes

Step 1. Lead-in/pre-reading
1、Give some information about Yushu earthquake.
2、Imaging your home begins to shake and you must leave it right now. You have timet to take only one thing.
What will you take Why
3、The best way to save yourself is to know there will be a quake before it happens .What do you think will happen before an earthquake Maybe you can refer to pictures on page 25.
4、Through two pictures before and after Tangshan enter in this lesson.
T: 30 years ago, on the day July, the 28th, a terrible disaster suddenly happened, and a beautiful city was removed from the map. Look at the two pictures, do you believe
that they are the same country But the truth is yes. Do you want to know what happened in this city Ok, today our text will tell you.
Step 2. while-reading
I. Skimming and scanning
T: First please skim the passage fast to obtain/ get a general understanding of the whole passage. And underline the answers to the following questions.
When did the earthquake happen
It happened on July 28th,1976.
2.How many people were killed or injured in the quake
More than 400,000
3.Who helped to rescue the people

1、 Why the title is A NIGHT THE EARTH DIDNT SLEEP
Suggested answer: night is the time to sleep, and night should be safe and quiet. But that night everything changed. The writer use this title to show how terrible and how usual the night was.
What does the sentence“Slowly, the city began to breathe again” mean
Suggested answer: the writer compare the city to a person who suffered a lot in the disaster. He felt her pain. So when people came to help her, he feel the city will not die, she has hope and she can recover from the pain.
