阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
My sister and I were flying by ourselves from our home in Kansas to a summer camp in Minnesota. Our plane had a two-hour stop at the airport in Omaha, Nebraska. A flight attendant took us to a souvenir shop, where a toy airplane looked just like the plane my sister and I were flying on. I really wanted that airplane. I had $10 and the plane cost $8. I had no idea what I needed to buy at camp, but I bought the plane anyway. When we reached the camp, I discovered that there were no showers! Instead, we bathed in a lake every night. I needed to buy special soap because the regular soap I brought had chemicals that could harm the fish. The special soap cost $4 at the camp store. However, I had only $2 left.
What upset me was that I couldn’t get clean without the soap, which was soon found by my teacher, Sally. I had to tell her that I had spent most of my money on a toy airplane. She laughed and explained to me that a budget was necessary and it was a plan for spending money to help make sure you set aside enough for things you need, like soap, before you buy fun things, like toys.
Sally gave me one of her extra(额外的) bottles of special soap. When I returned home, I decided to budget. I spent several weeks writing down everything I bought, just to get an idea of how I was already spending my money. Then I made my first weekly budget. My budget wasn’t always the same each week. For some weeks, I would have more in my “Money In” account because I did some jobs around the house. Once summer vacation started, I didn’t need to buy school lunches, so I had extra money to go to the neighborhood swimming pool or to give to the town animal shelter.
Budgeting was hard, sometimes. Whatever week it was, I always made sure that “Money In” equaled “Save and Spend. ” That’s called making ends meet, and it’s how you make sure that the money you have will always be enough to cover your plans to spend and save.
1. Why did Sally give the writer one bottle of her special soap?
A. The writer’s usual soap did harm to his skin.
B. The writer needed to take showers at the camp.
C. The writer turned to Sally for it to get clean.
D. The writer’s money couldn’t cover the special soap.
2. What did the writer learn about at the camp?
A. Spending and saving money.
B. Getting along with others.
C. Making more money.
D. Planning his daily life.
3. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My Summer Camp B. My Weekly Budget
C. My Special Soap D. My Lonely Flight

About six years ago I was going through a tough time, trying to work two jobs to afford my rent. On a cold Sunday morning, I went to Game Stop—a video game retailer(零售商), to cancel the game I’d booked. A woman in a car parked outside called me when I exited the store. Though it was in broad daylight, I was shy about it and kept some distance when I walked over. She said she couldn’t walk and requested me to purchase a Kinect, a popular game, for her as her son’s Christmas gift. Because of her leg disease it was painful for her to move around. She called ahead but the employee(雇员)wasn’t willing to help. She gave me about $ 100 in cash and her credit card.
I walked back in and bought the Kinect. Then it occurred to me that this woman, a complete stranger, trusted me. What was it that stopped me from lying about the payment method and just pocket her cash? She couldn’t know I wasn’t a cheat; and how could she possibly believe in someone so much?
I handed her the cash back, explaining I had to pay with her card—it was above $ 100 at the time, and handed over the game and her credit card. “This is what my son’s been longing for. Thank you! By the way, just from glancing at you, I know you are the one who will be a friend to someone in need. You have a face of an angel! ” she said. She gave me $ 10 and refused to take it back. Then she drove away.
She had no idea how much of a difference even $ 10 made. I was able to buy a few cheap groceries for the week and it really made a hard time in my life a little better. She may think I helped her; however, I truly feel like the one who was being gifted something amazing.

Though 3D printing technology has been available for over two decades,it has not gone mainstream as hoped because of the high cost and slow print speed. But that may change soon, thanks to German sportswear manufacturer Adidas. On December 15,2016,the company revealed Adidas 3D Runners, stylish sports sneakers featuring a 3D printed midsole (鞋底夹层) that provides athletes with the extra cushioning (软垫) needed for optimal performance.
Unlike traditional midsoles, these are not a uniform foam (泡沫),but web?like structures with varied density to take into account the impact areas of the foot. This means that the mesh (网眼) is thicker in the shoe's front and back, both of which hit the ground hard when the athlete runs.A 3D?printed heel, put into the midsole, eliminates the need for traditional gluing or stitching (缝合).The shoe upper, made of Primeknit, allows for increased flexibility, stability, and protection in the impact areas.
Not surprisingly, the stylish, limited edition black training shoes that were only available for sale in New York City,London, and Tokyo and cost $333,were an instant hit and sold out within hours of their release.Though not affordable or available to the mass market, the radical shoes are an encouraging step in the right direction for more widespread use of the technology.
While printing 3D objects may sound complicated, the process is relatively straightforward.Once the design is downloaded to a printer,a laser creates a layer of material, usually plastic or metal.Successive layers are deposited above one another and fused together until the product is complete. The technology can be used to build everything, from shoe soles to a microwave oven. There is currently even an effort underway to make a printer that is large enough to create the cement layers required to build a house.
8.3D printed midsoles are different from ordinary ones in that ________.
A.they are made of uniform foam
B.they are held together with glue
C.the meshes are larger than ordinary ones
D.they are like webs with different density
9.The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “________”.
A.catch up with B.get related to
C.be connected with D.get rid of
10.From Paragraph 3 we can infer that ________.
A.the shoes sold well
B.the shoes were relatively cheap
C.the shoes can satisfy the need of the market
D.the company can mass produce the shoes
11.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.What a 3D printer is.
B.How a 3D printer works.
C.How complicated the process is.
D.What size a 3D printer is.

Young Americans Are Less Wealthy Than Their Parents
The cost of living in the United States is going up, notes writer Alissa Quartz. As is reported in New York Post, Quartz points to “the costs of housing, education and health care in particular. ” At the same time, a new study, the report of which is called “The Fading American Dream” found that half of Americans born in the 1980s are falling behind their parents economically.
These findings show that many younger adults are experiencing “downward mobility. ” In other words, they are not doing as well economically as their parents were at the same age. The idea of downward mobility is especially troubling for Americans, writes Robert Samuelson in The Washington Post. He says most U. S. citizens believe that, over time, the amount of money they earn will rise and life will get easier.
Alissa Quartz wrote a book about the financial difficulties of Americans. In the book, Quartz tells about teachers who are struggling to pay for regular costs. One high school teacher drives for ride sharing service Uber at night to earn more money. He corrects students’ papers between riders.
A college professor turned to government assistance to feed her child and pay for a doctor. Quartz says even lawyers increasingly cannot earn an income that enables them to meet their needs. The problem of decreasing incomes in their field is made worse by debt they may have from law school. Quartz and the economists who studied these issues say many things have led to lower incomes and downward mobility. The economic recession(衰退) of 2007 to 2009 is partly to blame, they say. Modern technology also plays a part. Quartz says robots threaten to reduce the earnings of health care workers, reporters, and people who work at supermarkets, drug stores and tax preparation services. In The Washington Post, Robert Samuelson noted that poor schools, a weak housing industry and too many government rules are also to blame.
With all these things, and more, partly responsible, what is the solution? These experts say the answer is complex. But all point to one issue that needs to be examined: economic inequality. Quartz writes that while America is one of the richest countries in the world, it also has one of the biggest divides between the wealthy and the poor.
The researchers in “The Fading American Dream” study make a similar observation. They say raising GDP will not significantly improve the economic situation of most Americans. A higher GDP may help only those who are already doing well. Instead, the economists say, the United States could try to repeat something Americans born in the 1940s experienced. As those children grew up, they almost all benefited from a better economy.
13. The author mentions two reports in Paragraph 1 in order to ______. ?
A. explain the results of two researches
B. introduce his opinions about the issue
C. attract readers’ attention to health care
D. lead to the topic of downward mobility
14. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The causes of downward mobility.
B. The influences of government rules.
C. The negative effects of modern technology.
D. The results of economic recession in America.
15. The author indicates in this passage that ______. ?
A. raising GDP will greatly help the poor
B. American economy has a bright future
C. young Americans will repeat their parents’ experience
D. it’s necessary to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor

Rich and Famous
Twenty years ago the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. But today’s situation is quite different. 1 Instead they most commonly say they want to be a sports star, a pop star, or an actor—in other words, they hope to become a celebrity . ?
According to experts, young people desire these jobs largely because of the wealth and the fame. 2 Let’s take athletes and singers as an example. Their careers are short-lived. Many athletes’ best time only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career. The field that was once the focus of their lives becomes something they have little or no involvement in. As a result, they’ll have a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of control. 3 The truth is quite simple: they have been so far removed from it for so long. ?
In spite of these disadvantages, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to achieve that status. They are not satisfied just making a living—they want to be rich and famous. Globally, more and more TV shows provide talent competitions where winners can achieve their goals in just a few weeks or months. 4 They unrealistically believe that this lifestyle is easily obtained and leads to great satisfaction. ?
While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with having such ambitions, others feel that this trend will finally lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals. 5 That means they ignore the simple fact that great effort is needed before success. As a result, many people won’t realize their childhood dreams, which could have a negative effect on their happiness. ?
A. The younger generation don’t favor these professions any more.
B. In many ways this has been brought about by the celebrity culture.
C. Unfortunately, they do not always have a positive effect on people’s life.
D. Besides, it can be difficult for them to adapt back to a normal everyday life.
E. People no longer have a sense of satisfaction once their goals have been achieved.
F. This quick way of gaining wealth and fame creates a celebrity culture among people.
G. The reason is that they don’t realize it takes talent and hard work to be rich and famous.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn't get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you've got a problem.”
“I'm afraid so. I'm in a big hurry and I can't start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you're sure it wouldn't be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I'd be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought.“The suitcase! She thinks I'm the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.
