Beijing— The public has responded with vigorous support for an NPC deputy’s proposal to extend the Spring Festival holiday from three days to 10.
More than 78 percent of about 27, 600 respondents to a poll on www. people. com. cn voted in favor of the idea of Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan city in South-west China’s Sichuan province. Li said the lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions, especially for the nation’s 220 million migrant workers.
With hundreds of millions of people on the move during such a short time span, the holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism, she added. She suggested the holiday be extended and cover the three adjacent (毗连的) weekends, which means the public could take a total of 16 days off and floating population could spend the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar new year, with their families.
People would then have sufficient time to fully enjoy the traditional holiday with their families, Li said during an interview with People’s Daily Online on Friday.
Most online voters agreed that extending the holiday will ease the burden on public transport and strengthen family ties. “The Spring Festival is an occasion for family reunions and should be longer than the National Day holiday, ” one responder said in an online post. “Every year, I wish I could spend more time at home for the Spring Festival, but I always have to go back to work. I hope the NPC will approve this proposal. ”
Another online comment read: “Extending the Spring Festival holiday could prevent the annual transportation crush, which has in recent years resembled an exodus (出走) of fleeing refugees (难民)”.
Most of the about 13 percent who opposed the idea cited difficulties readjusting to work after the break. Some pointed out that office moral (士气) was generally low during the first week after the holiday. “After the six-day holiday, many people come back to work feeling absent-minded, ” one respondent said. Some who opposed the extension suggested adding the Lantern Festival as an official holiday.
Another 10 percent said lawmakers should carefully study the impacts before they make any decisions on holidays.

A. It could cover the two adjacent weekends.
B. The holiday would be from the first day of the lunar year.
C. She added the Lantern Festival as an independent official holiday.
D. The public could take a total of 16 days off including the Lantern Festival.

The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight. Everyone wants to kiss someone special (boyfriend, girlfriend or even a complete stranger! ) as the bells ring out at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Hundreds or even thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fabulous fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most watch special, live New Year shows on TV and countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland, on New Year’s Eve, people visit their neighbours and drink, dance and generally have a good time. If you’re invited to a Scottish home, it’s important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread and some whisky.
The coal shows warmth so you’re wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you’re hoping that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky “the water of life”, so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
There’s one more key task you still have to perform if you can. The first person to knock on a neighbour’s door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man. If you are, you’ll bring good luck to the household. But what if that’s not you? Well, don’t ring the bell just yet. Wait a while and the right person will turn up soon! ?
12. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Seeing the old year off in Britain.
B. Celebrations of a Scottish New Year.
C. Visiting Scottish homes on New Year.
D. Sending good luck in the New Year.
13. We know from the passage ______. ?
A. British people hate to think of the old year and wish to dance it away quickly
B. street concerts have become more popular on New Year’s Eve
C. British people let off fireworks in public places to celebrate the New Year
D. people stay at home doing nothing but wait for the bell of the New Year to ring
14. Why do visitors take some things to a Scottish home on New Year’s Eve?
A. To share good food and warmth.
B. To help those poor families.
C. To send best wishes to the families.
D. To show respect and richness.
15. The underlined phrase“the right person” in the last paragraph refers to ______. ?
A. the host of a special TV show
B. a tall, dark, handsome man
C. a man with coal, shortbread and whisky
D. a neighbor

When I was in seventh grade, I was a candy striper (护士助手) at a local hospital in my town. I volunteered about 30 to 40 hours a week during the summer.
Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Green. He never had any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he responded with only an occasional hold of my hand. Mr. Green was in a coma (昏迷).
I left for a week for a vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Green was gone. I didn't have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighth?grade year.
Paragraph 1:
Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a familiar face.

A:1-3ABD
B:4-7BDAD
C:8-11BAAC
D:12-15BCCB
1-5GBEFC
2. 【解析】the。
3. 【解析】to join。此处是get sb. to do sth.
4. 【解析】until。no young men could marry until he had served in the army for a number of years相当于the young men could not marry until he had served in the army for a number of years, 是not. . . until. . .
5. 【解析】named。named Valentine相当于定语从句who was named Valentine, 作定语修饰priest。
7. 【解析】where。 where在此处相当于in which。
8. 【解析】was made。

On that day, our family members usually get together and have a nice meal. After that, I always admire the moon and share mooncakes with my family.
I love this festival because I like eating mooncakes. They are in the shape of a full moon and carry people’s wishes to the family they love.
In short, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a special day full of pleasure and happiness. I hope that my letter will help you know more about Chinese festivals.
Best wishes to you.

Paragraph 1:
Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a familiar face. When I realized who it was, my eyes were filled with tears. He was alive! I got up the nerve to ask him if he was Mr. Green, and if he had been in a coma about five years ago. With an uncertain look on his face, he replied yes. I explained how I knew him, and that I had spent many hours talking to him in the hospital. His eyes welled up with tears, and he gave me the warmest hug I had ever received.
Paragraph 2:
He began to tell me how, as he lay there comatose, he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angel, who was there with him. Mr. Green firmly believed that it was my voice and touch that had kept him alive. Then he told me about his life. We exchanged a hug, said our good?byes and went our separate ways.
