When we are kids, we don’t know what we will overcome. At the age of thirteen, I fell ill. This illness lasted three years and I missed a lot of schooling. Doctors tried their best to help me as much as possible, but in the end this was something I just had to be used to. I felt little hope in life. However, in my junior year of high school, I had a turning point. I discovered my gift for writing and then I realized if I continued to let this problem hold me back, my dream would never come true. So my state of mind changed. Going through the difficulty also gave me the strong desire to write. Writing what mattered most to me helped me overcome what sickened me.
During my freshman and sophomore (高中二年级的) year I did not learn much due to illness. So I became focused and determined and actually completed high school in two years instead of four. At the close of my junior year, I had straight A’s and became an honor roll student. Seeing what I had accomplished, I realized that having disadvantages doesn’t mean it is impossible to achieve success.
By becoming a writer, I’ve become a reader. While performing community service at the library, I read to those who are less fortunate and unable to read. From pre-school children to the elderly, I enjoy my time reading to people of all ages. It is pleasing to see the awesome expressions on their faces as the words become a vision in their minds. Giving back is one of the greatest gifts you could give in life. It inspires me to write something people can learn from.

Maricel Apatan, 22, stands in the kitchen of the Edsa Shangi?La Hotel in Manila, preparing to decorate a cheese cake. It would seem to be a routine task for a cake chef, but Maricel is no ordinary chef—she has no hands.

My family, my wife, Joan, our two teenagers Hannah and Joseph, and I, live in Atlanta with our two dogs.
Ten years ago, we moved into our dream house, a very big three-story home. It was a beautiful place, but as our children grew up, our sense of togetherness (团结) began to disappear slowly. In the big house, we sometimes seemed to be strangers to each other.
One day when Hannah was 14, she became upset about the difference between the world’s haves and the have-nots. She expected us to be “a family that makes a difference in the world, even if it’s a small difference. ” Joan asked her, “What are you willing to sacrifice? Your house? Your room? ” Hannah said yes to both. After talking it over as a family, we decided to sell our house and move to one that was half its size and price and donate (捐赠) the difference to those in need.
After a lot of research, we chose the Hunger Project, a US-based organization. It works with villagers in Africa, Asia and South America and helps them fight against poverty (贫穷). Our money went to pay for building two centers. Each has a meeting place, a bank and a health clinic (诊所). Together, the centers would serve more than 20 villages in eastern Ghana. We also traveled to meet the villagers and were blown away by their hard work and warmth.
To be honest, we were a little worried at first. Would we regard the new home as being too small for us? Or would we think we had given up too much? Two years later, I can tell you: It’s the best move we have ever made. While we worked together on our family project, we became much closer. As Hannah said the other day, “We learned how to really trust each other. ”

B. To help the poor.
C. To treat Hannah’s illness.
D. To save money for the future.

When writing the story of your life, don’t let someone else hold the pen. 1 Here are some ideas for writing a life story: ?

Sometimes growing up means growing apart from old habits, relationships, and situations, and finding something new that truly moves you. 3 You should look very clearly into the unknown and enjoy it. Live honorably through kindness. If you live honorably, no matter how old you get, you’ll never lose your beauty. 4 ?
Spend quality time with people you love. 5 People don’t live forever. Appreciate what you have, who loves you and who cares for you. My parents and I had been planning my brother's birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old in two days. My mom was going to bake her special chocolate cake with white icing. As I watched her, I thought, “Gee, I wonder what I can do to make my brother's birthday special.”
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thought,I wanted to buy him the paint?by?number kit (数字涂色小套装) I had seen at the store around the corner.
I decided to empty my coin jar and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “Oh, no, I only have about three dollars,” I muttered to myself. The set cost more than I have saved.
Suddenly a “great” idea occurred to me. I slid into my parents' bedroom where my dad kept loose change on top of the dresser. I stood on my tiptoes and saw some dime, nickels, and a few quarters. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference. “I'm sure Dad won't mind just this once,” I thought.
However,I was soon overcome by guilt. Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. “Maybe my plan wasn't such a great idea after all,” I thought. I jingled the change around in my pocket while wondering what to do.
I grabbed my jacket from the closet and headed toward the door. “Where are you going, honey?” Mom asked. “Oh, just up to the corner store,” I replied. “Well, don't stay out too long. Daddy will be home soon.” “Okay, Mom,” I ran out of our house.
Once I got to the store,I took the paint?by?number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady?” the salesclerk asked.
“No, I'm just looking. Thank you,” I said.
“That's a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that's the last one,” she said.

Two years later, he was sentenced to prison for life for being one of the ANC leaders, but after being released from prison in 1990, he continued to make efforts to achieve the dream of making black and white people equal. Owing to his great work, not only did he win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, but also he was elected (as) President of South Africa a year later.
This excellent film has been made in honor of Mandela, which is really worth seeing because you can benefit a lot from it.
【故事续写】
Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, with my mind racing. But finally, I decided to place the paint?by?number kit back on the shelf and headed home. Luckily, once I got home, Mom was busy talking on the phone and Dad wasn't back home yet, so I was able to slip past the kitchen without being noticed. I went to my parents' room to return the coins I had taken. I arranged them into a neat stack—just like they were before—and sighed with relief, knowing I had done the right thing.
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed. The salesclerk had even agreed that she would hold the paint set behind the counter for me until I had enough money to pay for it. I figured I could earn it by doing odd jobs around the house. Then I wasn't able to buy the paint kit until two weeks later, but it seemed extra special when I was finally able to lay my money on the counter. I smiled as I raced home knowing the paint kit would be the perfect present for Johnny.
