If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2012. “It’s the next ‘wow’vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”
The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and land.
The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.
The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.
The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.
The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS. Another option is a full-plane parachute. “If you get into a very awful situation, it is the necessary safety option,” Gersh said.
So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

Endangered languages are languages that wouldn’t exist any longer, much like endangered species of plants or animals. Languages are considered to be endangered when parents are no longer teaching the language to their children and are not using it actively in everyday life. A language is considered to nearly disappear when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers.
The world faces enormous challenges in order to protect different kinds of languages. Of the more than 6,912 languages, half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades.
It is caused by many reasons: small numbers of speakers, the regular use of other languages, attitudes towards their languages, moving of the younger population, government policies, and languages used in education and so on. A language may lack important things such as a body of literature, and people who read and write it. A language may also lack prestige (声望) and support of its speakers.
The survival of a language is also threatened when speakers move to other areas where different languages are spoken, or when government policies improve the use of a specific language in school, official business and the media. These situations encourage people to learn the wider-known language and may cause them, especially the young, to stop using their mother tongue. Often those speaking lesser-known languages will choose to learn a more prestigious language with the hope of greater economic opportunities. Most of the world’s parents are teaching their children English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian or some other main languages instead of their own languages for social and economic reasons.
66. What’s the main idea of this passage
A. Languages in the world. B. Reasons why languages become endangered.
C. What an endangered language is. D. Languages spoken by few speakers.
67. About ________languages will probably disappear in this century according to the passage.

C. 6,912 D. less than 3,456
68. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
①=Paragraph1 ②=Paragraph2 ③=Paragraph3 ④=Paragraph4
69. We can infer that the best way to maintain an endangered language is to _________.
A. forbid the speakers to move about
B. pass laws to protect the language
C. raise the salaries of the people who speak the language
D. teach the language to young children and encourage people to speak it often
70. All of the following about languages are true EXCEPT __________.

B. government policies have a big effect on languages
C. the endangered language is a language that is spoken by a few people
D. languages are related to their speakers’ social and economic position

TAIBEI-Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island’s “China rush”, seeking education on the Chinese mainland.
According to official Chinese figures, the number of Taiwanese students admitted into college and postgraduate(研究生)programs on the mainland totaled 1461 in 2006, 1928 in 2007 and 1839 in 2008. Although no latest official numbers were available,” said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percent annually in the past two years with over 2000 entering mainland campuses last year.
The Internet site, based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, provides education service and information on Chinese mainland college and universities. “Many Taiwanese believe a Chinese education giving more knowledge about the people and culture in the mainland will increase their chances in the Chinese job market", vice-president Ingrid Huang said. “I believe it will give me hands-on experience in the business field on the Chinese mainland and a better understanding of the Chinese mainland people,” said Lydia Chang, a 19-year-old student majoring in journalism at Shih Shin University. Chang plans to go on to get a master’s degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies.
A journalism graduate student, surnamed Lin, at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since “there will be better career prospects now that more Taiwanese companies are going there”. “They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations,” said Yang Ching-yao, professor of the Chinese mainland studies. A survey showed the campuses favored by Taiwan students included Beijing, Qinghua and Renmin universities in Beijing, and Jinan and Zhongshan universities in Guangzhou. The most popular studies were law, business and Chinese medicine.
At present, Chinese Taibei doesn’t recognize diplomas earned on the Chinese mainland nor help with any inquiries about studying there. But recognizing the trend, education authorities are giving a final form to a policy accepting certificates from selected universities.

One possible version:
Dear editor,
We have done some research about migrant schools in our city lately and we are shocked to see the environment of the schools is so poor. The schools have no modern equipment, no playground, no library, and even no enough teachers. However, despite the bad conditions, migrant kids are just as keen on study as us.
Seeing this, we are shocked and at the same time feel sorry for them. I think all those problems are due to one key point—the lack of money, which, therefore, leads to a huge difference in education even with the kids in the same city.
There are a lot of things we can do to help them. For example, our government can pour more money into migrant schools. Besides, we city students can help collect money or donate some books to them.
I do hope that the whole society can care more about migrant kids. If everybody contributes a bit, migrant kids can surely enjoy an equal education opportunity.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Oh,My dear! You must take a plane when you come home next time.
M: Don’t worry, Mom. It’s OK for me. Besides, I want to save some money for the travel in the next summer vocation.
Text 8
M: I saw you were drinking tea with a guy the other day. Who was he, Paula
W: Where was that I don’t know what you are talking about.
M: In Mr. Brown’s Tea House, last Saturday afternoon.
W: Oh, I remember now. It was John Hanks, my school classmate. He came to attend his cousin’s wedding. He asked me to find an apartment for him, but I haven’t found a suitable one yet.
M: What kind of apartment does he want
W: One with three bedrooms and a large living room, on the ground floor and neat the central bus station.
M: Oh, he must be interested in my uncle’s. It was built twenty years ago, and he can rent it or buy it.
W: Good, Mike. Now I will call and tell him. Shall I take him to see the apartment this afternoon
Text 9
W: John, tomorrow we’ll graduate and leave the university. Have you found a job
M: No, I don’t want to start to work so early. I’ve decided to travel around the United States and then Europe. What about you, Alice
W: Well, I’ll go home and stay with my parents for some time and then come back to work with the Dell Company.
M: The one in the east part of the city What will you do there
W: I’ll work in the HR Department and sometimes help with the work on the website of the company.
M: I’m sure you’ll do it well. You are always a diligent and exact person. Where will you live
W: I haven’t decided yet. The company has offered to pay half the rent if I rent a flat or I can live in the staff quarter with others for free.
M: That sounds like a good company. Maybe I can find a job there.
W: Surely you can. Their project manager has just retired so it needs a new one. Surely you can do it. You’ve read so many books.
M: Well, in that case I won’t be able to travel anywhere---.
Text 10
Working long hours can greatly increase the risk of suffering injury or illness, a study says. Workers who do overtime were 61﹪ more likely to become hurt or ill, once factors such as age and gender were taken into account. And working more than 12 hours a day raised the risk by more than a third. Report co-author Allard Dombe said risk was not necessarily associated with how harmful the job was. “The results of this study suggest that jobs with long working hours are not more risky merely because they are concentrated in harmful industries or occupations.” And he said the findings, published in the Occupational and Environmental Health journal, supported the proposal to cut the number of working hours. From the records, researchers found 5,139 work-related injuries and illnesses, ranging from stress to cuts, burns and muscle injuries. More than half of these injuries and illness occurred in jobs with extended working hours or overtime. The researchers concluded that the more hours worked, the greater the risk of injury. But they did not find that lengthy commutes to and from work had any impact on illness and injury. In the UK 14﹪ of the working population ---3.6 million--- work more than 48 hours a week.

(学生点评)
The migrant school is so poor that it can’t be
compared with our equipped school. To start with,
the facilities are old, which make us very sad.
What’s more, lacking teachers prevents migrant
children learning more knowledge. Much to our
surprise, though in such a bad environment, they
are fond of studying very much.
On seeing the scene, we can do nothing but
burst into tears. I think we should treasure our good
studying environment. On the other hand, what
should we do to help the migrant children?
As far as I’m concerned, our government should
invest more money in education of migrant children.
Besides, we students can donate some money or
books to them. If everyone does a bit to help them,
their life will become better and better.
