Laptop computers are popular all over the world.People use them on trains and airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want.Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake,a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to“speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home,in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

As she walked around the huge department store, Edith reflected how difficult it was to choose a suitable Christmas present for her father. She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always delighted with perfume.
Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most disagreeable experience:people trod (踩) on your toes, poked (捅) you with their elbows and almost knocked you over in their haste to get to a bargain ahead of you.
Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter where some attractive ties were on display.“They are real silk,” the assistant assured her, trying to tempt her.“Worth double the price.” But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.
She moved on reluctantly and then quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some good quality pipes on sale—and the prices were very reasonable.Edith did not hesitate for long:although her father only smoked a pipe occasionally, she knew that this was a present which was bound to please him.
When she got home, with her small well-chosen present concealed in her handbag, her parents were already at the supper table. Her mother was in an especially cheerful mood, “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking.” She informed her daughter.

America is a mobile society.Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more.If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flow more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily, but truly can’t manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus.And they expect that we will phone them from there.Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes.?
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
12.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B.Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

A.Friendships between Chinese
B.Friendships between Americans

D.Americans’ and Chinese views of friendships
15.The writer of this passage must be .?
A.an American B.a Chinese
C.a professor D.a student

Want to know how to be a confident friend-finder? We can help, with four easy steps.
Step 1 Change your mental state.
It’s easy to get so freaked out(不安的)about being in a new situation that you start throwing off don’t-come-near-me signals. And guess what? It worked. 1 Instead, change your attitude with some positive thinking.Tell yourself“It’ll be great to get to know someone new”, or “I can’t wait to hear what these girls have to say.”?
Step 2 Remember, the eyes have it.
The first place we look at when we’re uncomfortable is the floor. No one can tell if we’re embarrassed. We can’t tell if anyone is looking at us.Whoa! 2 Holding your head up and making eye contact is a bold(大胆的)move. It’s confident and friendly.?
Step 3 3 ?
Does starting a communication bring on an attack of shyness? Try adding a good question to your friend-finding tools.Strong opening questions usually begin with “what” or “how” words that get people talking.Typically, our first instinct (本能) is to ask a “can” or a “do” question, like “Can I borrow a pencil?” or “Do you know where the bathroom is? 4 Asking “what” or “how” questions gets you more information to respond to.Try something like “Hi.I really like that flower. How did you draw it?” or “Hi.I’m new. What’s the least scary lunch option in the cafeteria?”?
Step 4 Practice, practice, practice.
Making new friends is a skill. 5 But the more you practice, the more relaxed and natural you’ll feel, and the easier it will get.So flash that smile, offer some welcoming words, and soon you’ll be hanging out with your newest friends!?
A.People don’t come near you.
B.All you need is one question.
C.Listen closely to their answers.
D.Not a good way to meet people.
E.The thought of meeting people makes you excited.
F.But that only gets you short answers.Like “Yeah”or “Down the hall”.
G.Like art, music, or sports, it takes practice to feel truly confident of it.

At a recent 6-year-old’s birthday party together with my daughter,I watched two girls playing in a playroom.Three boys came over and decided they were going to drive the girls away.“No girls allowed,”said one boy.The other two boys crowded around the girls for effect. One of the girls,in fear, did as she was ordered and left the playroom. The other girl stood her ground.“We were here first. You can’t kick us out,”she said.
They weren’t my kids,so I gently told the boys that everyone was allowed to play in the playroom. The boys ignored me,and continued to push the remaining girl out of the room. The girl fell on the ground and screamed in pain. The boys went on with their no-girls-allowed game.I took the girl over to the parents at the party and explained what had happened. What followed was a lesson in how girls were schooled in male power and privilege(特权).
The girl’s mother told her that she should have stayed away from the boys. The message to the girl was that it was her fault because she didn’t do what the boys had ordered.A father of one of the boys laughed and told me that I should have caught the girl as she fell. There were no consequences for the boys.Their violence was so much an accepted part of their behavior that it didn’t even raise an eyebrow. In fact, the attitude of the father was that using physical strength to get what you wanted was to be celebrated. The message to the boys was that they could hurt girls without any consequence.Another mother said,“It’s so hard for boys and girls to play together at this age.”
Paragraph 1:
To that mother’s words,my response is:No!It’s not!
Paragraph 2:
My six-year-old daughter observed the events at the party.

Nowadays,Internet voting has widely appeared in our daily life. From my point of view,Internet voting is actually beneficial.
Firstly,Internet voting is more convenient and economical compared with the conventional voting approach.Secondly, glorious deeds will be spread through the Internet. It can cheer people up and encourage them to do what benefits our society. Thus,we will live in a peaceful society where people are warm-hearted and full of positive energy.
Though Internet voting sometimes leaves us in a dilemma,I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. After all,we can follow our heart if we insist.
【故事续写】
Paragraph 1:
To that mother’s words,my response is:No!It’s not!We are all humans, born without any difference.Though it seems to be a small thing, just a quarrel among children, what it shows is that girls are now suffering from prejudice.Actually, boys and girls are just like two poles of our Earth,so they can’t be apart and there is nothing about who are better.Boys should have a respectful attitude to girls.I think all the parents should teach their children that boys and girls have the same rights.
Paragraph 2:
My six-year-old daughter observed the events at the party. And afterwards she said,“Mom,I think those boys can’t drive the girls away and even injure them,”I said,“That’s true,my dear.Girls are now being looked down upon, but you need to understand that we are equal, though some people don’t think like this.”My daughter nodded and said,“I will try my best to stop violence against women and girls.”
