At the end of my senior year of high school,I got a job working at a local coffee shop.I thought the job would be easy and stress-free.I pictured myself pouring the best coffees, making delicious doughnuts (炸面包圈),and becoming friends with regular customers.
I wasn’t expecting the people with enormous orders, the women who complained that the coffee was much too creamy (含乳脂的),or the men who wanted their iced coffees remade again and again until they reached perfection.I couldn’t seem to please anyone.
One rainy day,one of my regular customers came in looking upset. He said he felt like getting in bed, pulling the sheets up over his head, and staying there for a few years.I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he left,I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He was surprised, since he hadn’t ordered anything but coffee.I had given him his favourite type of doughnut.
“It’s on me,” I told him.“Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before heading back out into the rain.
The next day,it was still raining.I spent my afternoon hanging out the window handing people their orders.I was completely wet and freezing cold.Worse,no one was tipping that day.Every time I looked into our empty tip jar,I grew more depressed.
In the evening, the customer from the day before drove up to the window. He handed me a pink rose and a note.He said that not many people took time to care about others and he was glad there were still people like me in the world. With a friendly wave,he drove away.
I ran to the back of the shop and read the note.It read:
Christine,
Thanks for being so sweet, kind and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who’s indeed nice. Please don’t change your ways! Have a great day!—Hank
After that, whenever I felt depressed or sick of coffee,I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely,“How can I help you?”

Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own,not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first travelled alone when she was at college and believed that it was something everyone should do at least once in their life. She said,“It opens your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill,or lend you money if your wallet is stolen,it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go travelling last year.He set up a website,The Aussie Nomad,to document his adventures. He said he wished he had travelled alone earlier.“The people you meet, the places you visit,or the things you do,everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the man.
Chris describes travelling alone as “a shot in the arm”,which makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything. He said,“The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task.I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
As the saying goes,“Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

I had a lot of teachers that I loved. However, the teacher that I remember most was Mrs Green from Marianna,Florida. She was my 5th grade teacher.Since I was a new student, not only in her class, but at the school, she made my time there much more pleasant.I immediately began to like her.She was really funny and I knew that she liked me.She made learning fun.I remember one day for Christmas holidays, she taught us how to make ornaments (装饰物) from eggs.My parents still have some of the ornaments I made.
She made me leader for many group projects and that made me feel special.I think that would make any child feel special, especially when a child is in a new place with no friends. She made me want to be like that. Not to pick a “favourite” student, but to make every student feel that they are special. That year,I received the Presidential Academic Award (美国总统学术奖).I was really proud and so were my parents.
Looking back at it,I think the reason why I did so well was that I felt important.Students do better when they feel like they are important or loved.Mrs Green always gets to know her students and forms personal relationships with them, which I will try to do some day.I just hope that there will be students who find me to be their favourite teacher as I found her to be mine.
