Gary Messina, an investment banking analyst, now 38, was on his morning run along New York City's East River. Suddenly something caught his eye-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆)that guarded the path from the water. As he got closer to the scene, the man took a step forward and jumped into the dark, rough river below. Messina rushed to the railing to find that the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. If he had intended to kill himself that morning, he had now changed his mind. The jumper screamed crazily for help as the rapids pulled him away from the seawall (防波堤).Other joggers also heard the man's calling. John Green, now 31, immediately dropped his phone and keys on land, along with his sneakers, and jumped in the cold river. "People had called the police, but it was unclear when they'd get there," says Green, a commercial insurance broker. "I just reacted." Soon after that, Messina joined him in the river.
The flow was rapid while the temperature was freezing. Reaching to the jumper seemed to be a nearly impossible task for the two rescuers. Luckily, just as the jumper was losing strength, Green grabbed hold of him. The pair were about 30 yards from the seawall when Messina caught up with them. They stabilized the man, with Messina supporting his back and Green holding him up from either side. He was unresponsive but not unconscious.
As the men made their way toward the concrete seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Green had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wail and no ladder or dock(码头)in sight, there was no way out of the river. What's worse, the jumper, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers' arms, which meant they could use only their legs to support themselves in the water.

Part C

"A rescue boat is on its way," someone yelled to them.
Treading water was getting tougher as time went by.
After ten minutes, they managed to get to the river's edge.
Green tried wedging a hand and a foot into a tiny crack in the wall, resulting in cutting himself in the process.
Fighting the current and holding the man above the water quickly became exhausting, so they gave in to drifting while staying as close to the wall as they could.
Fortunately, the rescue boat finally came in sight.
However, they encountered a new threat: The flow created by the rapids was sucking them under the boat.
Messina remembers being pulled down just as the rescuers grabbed onto the man allowing him to let go. "I was completely out of energy," he says.
Somehow, he grasped a pole attached to the boat deck, which undisputedly brought him to safety.
Within ten minutes, the group was back on land.
The man they had saved was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
As for the rescuers, both of them was at work by 10:30 a. m.
"I was a bit late," admits Green, smiling. "But I had a good excuse."

Part E 课后练笔巩固提升 .
When tragedy struck his little girl during the Depression(大萧条), this father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again.
The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a puddle(水坑) after a rainstorm and suddenly felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on them. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away—never knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was.
An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I returned home, I could hardly walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them…but I couldn’t. I felt so left out despite my parents’ company.
My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a tricycle(三轮车)to strengthen the muscle and eventually get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an extravagance(奢侈品). Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove.
Dad couldn’t afford the bus fare and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat to get to work. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a cripple(瘸子)all my life.

参考答案:
Paragraph 1:
Then one day, while sitting at my usual place in the window, I saw my father walking up the street carrying a tricycle on his shoulder. Was that true? I couldn't believe my eyes.I opened the window and cried out,“Is that tricycle for me?” Having put down the tricycle,Dad told me that it belonged to me.“Ride the tricycle every day,and then you will be all right,my girl!”From then on,with my father's company,I rode it every day to strengthen my muscle.Regardless of pain,I kept on practicing riding.Eventually I got my feet back into condition, and could walk normally!
Paragraph 2:
It was many years later before I learned where and how Dad had got the tricycle. My mother told me what happened on those cold winter days.In his only winter coat,he was wandering around the hospital. He begged the doctor to save my feet.Moved by my father, the doctor asked the hospital to give my father a parttime job to do.With the doctor's help,my father got the job.Working day and night, eventually,he earned enough money to buy the tricycle.
