Lesson 12 A Blog about the Silk Road
Ⅰ. Teaching objectives
Aims of knowledge:
①Enable students to master the following words and phrases like experience, alive and open up one’s eyes.
②Enable students to use the sentence patterns like I experienced a lot on this trip, The history of China is so alive.
Aims of abilities:
①Improve students’ reading skills like prediction, skimming and scanning.
②Enable students to talk about a trip they went on and share it in class.
Aims of emotions:
①Cultivate students’ cultural awareness by reviewing the history and culture of the Silk Road.
②Understand the meanings of travelling by talking about their own trip.
Ⅱ.Teaching emphasis and difficulties
1. Integrate different aspects about the Silk Road into comprehensible logic ones by reviewing its origin, places of interest and Marco Polo.
2. Enable students to retell Li Ming’s trip with the key words.
3. Instruct students to talk about their own trip in simple past tense.

Step 1 Warming up
Ask students to review some key information about the Silk Road from the following three aspects.
1. The origin of the Silk Road
The Silk Road gets its name because of____.
A. silk trade B. tea trade C. china trade
2. Places of interest: Show some pictures and let students talk about the places of interest along the Silk Road.
3. Marco Polo: Let students talk about Marco Polo with some clues in this unit.
Purpose: This step aims to activate students background information about the Silk Road by reviewing the main points about the Silk Road in this unit. It also aims to promote students cultural awareness and cultivate their love for our rich culture.
The quick review is designed in different forms such as multiple choices, free talk based on some pictures and blank-filling. This design lowers the degree of difficulty and makes it suitable for our students learning level.
Step 2 Reading
1. Pre-reading
Ask students to predict the content according to the title and pictures.
1) This lesson is a ________(blog/e-mail/diary...).
2) _______wrote this blog.
3) Maybe this blog is about _______.
Purpose: Prediction is an important reading skill for students. This task can guide students to predict the genre and the main content of this text. And the prediction here can help students grasp some useful information about the text and make preparations for the following detailed reading.
2. Fast-reading
Let students go though this passage quickly and find out the main idea with the skill of skimming.
What did Li Ming mainly talk about in this lesson?
A. His experience and feeling about the trip to the Silk Road
B. The history of China
C. The ancient city of Xi'an
D. His friends from Canada
Purpose: The task aims to let students have a general understanding of the text.
3. Careful- reading
Let students read this passage carefully and find some specific information with the skill of scanning.
1) Who did Li Ming go with?
What did Li Ming see in Xi'an?
(What else did he see and experience?)
What did Li Ming realize on his trip?
a) He _________ many things. This trip ________ his eyes.
b) Our country has a very ______ history and a ______ culture.
c) The history of China is so ______ in these places.
4) What do you think of this trip? This trip was _________.
Purpose: This task can train students to use the skill of scanning to grasp the specific information. Students can learn the expressions like 搊pen up my eyes 揟he history of China is so alive in these places in the process of comprehensive reading.
These questions together form the basic aspects of talking about a trip, which paves way for the following retell activity. The last question, especially, asks a higher demand for students and helps improve their thinking skills.

Purpose: From Li Ming抯 trip to their own trip, this activity asks a higher expectation for students current level. The above framework is aimed to give students some ideas about how to talk about their trip. By sharing their own trip with group members, students can open up their mind and improve their speaking.
Step 4 Arouse students emotions
Life is like a long journey. The more we travel, the more we learn. By travelling, we can learn about the history and culture of different places, and we can open up our eyes. Make students realize the meanings of travelling and cultivate their love for it.
Step 5 Homework

Let students write a short passage about a trip they went on based on the discussion in class. It aims to improve students writing skill.
