On a hot July day in Fairfax, Virginia, the couple team Christopher Pci and Zhang Guifeng are training their students while observing their emotions before their USA Wushu Kungfu Federation National Team Trials (选拔赛).
“They are so nervous because they are experiencing competition anxiety," says Pei, co — founder of US Wushu Academy. "The anxiety allows me only an hour of sleep every night during the competition.”
Wushu is a sport that combines elements of performance and martial arts. The USAWKF National Team Trials happen every two years. Coaches and students get up at 7 am each day to practice for the trials. For 30 years Pei and Zhang have been working in Wushu education.
Pci, who is in his 60s, moved to the United States from China with his family in 1972. “When we moved to Vestal, New York, 1 did not know any English and started learning English from alphabets," Pci says. "So 1 figured it might be a better idea to start learning Wushu in case I got into a
fight and could protect myself." He later realized Wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, "zhi" (it) and "ge" (戈) which means to stop fighting.
The couple opened (heir first academy in Virginia in 1988. Students start as kindergartners and many continue all the way to college.
Chinese culture emphasizes mastering both literacy and martial arts in order to become a complete person. Zhang believes Wushu helps youth develop concentration because its two main principles include focus and respect. "Many parents who grew up in the U.S. as second- or third-generation Chinese need their children to not only learn traditional Chinese culture but also the correct way to become a better person," Pei says.
They devote six days of the week to Wushu education. Sunday is the only day when their attention is not on their students. ''Learning Wushu is difficult, Pei says. "But the students don't easily give up.”
24. How does Christopher Pei feel during the USAWKF National Team Trials?
A. Disappointed. B. Inspired. C. Relieved. D. Stressed.

When you look in the mirror, you see yourself That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees(黑猩猩).The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish - the cleaner wrasse - has also spotted its reflection.
Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection - when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even ,to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.
But Jordan said, 'Tin the Iasi to say that the cleaner wrasse fish is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.
One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar(声波定位)to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.
Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant(自我知晓的),but not the same extent(程度)as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.
28.Why are dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees mentioned in the text?
A. They are as clever as humans. B. They have some sense of self.
C. They have the same intelligence. D. They are widely used in experiments.
29. The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan .
A. doubt whether the mirror test is reliable
B. discover the secret about the fish's sight
C. develop a better method to replace the mirror test
D. believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined part "wrestled with”?
A. presented with B. ended with C. struggled with D. agreed with
3 l. What can we learn from the text?
A. It is relatively easy to test animals' consciousness.
B. Some concepts for humans can't be applied to animals.
C. Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.
D. More mirror tests are needed to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day arc at the risk of developing ADHD (多 动症).a study has concluded.
The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600 teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked their phones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the most often were twice as likely as those who cheeked the least often to show signs of ADHD.
Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern media devices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or video game play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may draw attention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt the development of constant attention and organization skills."
They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous researches had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. "What's new is that previous studies on this topic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets and mobile apps didn't exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposed to higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future, he said.
Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how new mobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk for children. And the findings serve as a warning.
British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided by the students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the children similarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with either actual behavior or higher quality survey items.” 32. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD.
B. By controlling different teens, time spent on social media.
C. By tracking the participants for two years.
D. By analyzing data from previous researches online.
33. What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media?
A. It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms.
B. It will create higher ADHD risks.
C. It will weaken teenagers' confidence.
D. It will have a major influence on organization skills.
34. What docs Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study?
A. It provides a better understanding of the media.
B. It should have focused on parents' responses.
C. Its findings are not reliable enough.
D. It's a breakthrough in this field.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The use of digital media is on the rise
B. Teens' exposure to modem media calls more attention
C. Heavy use of social media may increase Teens' ADHD risks
D. Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD
