Fire
Capt
Kevin
Lloyd
arrived
at
the
scene
of
a
car
accident
in
West
Point,Utah,north
of
Salt
Lake
City.A
pregnant
woman
and
her
screaming
2-year-old
daughter
were
trapped
in
the
car.
While
his
partner,Allen
Hadley,was
lending
to
the
driver,Lloyd
couldn’t
get
the
frightened
girl
to
calm
down.He
saw
she
was
holding
several
bottles
of
nail
polish,and
then
he
had
a
better
idea.He
asked
her
if
she
wanted
to
paint
his
nails.Soon
her
eyes
lit
up.At
the
same
time,Hadley
showed
up
to
check
on
the
scene.
Lloyd
had
calmed
her
down
and
was
in
the
process
of
getting
his
fingers
painted.Then
Hadley
just
put
his
hand
in
there.The
girl
began
to
color
his
nails
pink.By
this
time,she
was
not
only
calm,but
she
was
also
happy.
The
girl’s
mother
was
not
injured.She
thanked
them
for
helping
her
daughter
feel
better,and
they
all
chuckled,looking
at
the
nails,and
took
some
photos.
The
firefighters
brought
the
photos
back
to
the
headquarters
and
showed
them
around.The
department
put
them
up
on
the
social
media,and
thousands
of
people
responded,with
many
thanking
the
firefighters
for
going
out
of
their
way
to
calm
down
a
frightened
girl.
Fire
Chief
Mark
Becraft
said
he
had
been
surprised
at
all
the
attention.He
said
he
was
proud
of
his
firefighters,and
added
that
he
had
known
members
of
the
department
who
had
done
many
things
that
weren’t
part
of
the
job.
After
the
fact,Lloyd
and
Hadley
had
a
small
matter
to
tend
to:
the
layers
of
polish
on
their
nails.They
bought
a
bottle
of
nail
polish
remover,and
used
almost
all
of
it.

Just
ask
any
new
parent:
Adding
a
baby
to
a
household
can
also
add
stress
to
a
career.
Now,a
new
study
backs
that
up
with
some
astonishing
numbers:
After
science,technology,engineering,and
mathematics(STEM)professionals
become
parents,43%of
women
and
23%
of
men
switch
fields,transition(转变)to
part-time
work,or
leave
the
workforce
entirely.
Many
researchers
and
parents
already
knew
that
STEM
can
be
unwelcoming
to
parents,particularly
mothers.
But“the
considerable
departure
was
astonishing,”says
Erin
Cech,an
assistant
professor
of
sociology
at
the
University
of
Michigan
in
Ann
Arbor
and
lead
author
of
the
study,published
in
the
Proceedings
of
the
National
Academy
of
Sciences.
For
both
genders,“the
proportions
were
higher
than
we
expected.

The
surprisingly
high
reduction
rate
for
men
also
highlights
that“parenthood
in
STEM
is
not
just
a
mothers'issue;it's
a
worker
issue,”Cech
says.
She
hopes
that
the
findings“might
motivate
changes,"such
as
more
paid
parental
leave
from
both
government
and
employers
and
policies
that
better
support
flexible
work
time
without
a
tight
routine.
“We
are
not
suggesting
that
people
who
want
families
should
avoid
STEM;that's
not
the
solution,”she
emphasizes.
By
2018,78%
of
new
fathers
were
still
working
in
STEM,the
vast
majority
full
time.
For
new
mothers,68%
were
still
in
STEM,but
only
57%
worked
full
time.
For
professionals
without
children,on
the
other
hand,84%
of
men
and
76%
of
women
were
predicted
to
still
be
working
in
STEM
full
time
in
2018.
For
the
new
parents
across
all
fields,16%
of
women
were
working
part-time
and
15%
had
left
the
workforce,as
compared
with
just
2%
and
3%,respectively,for
men.
These
sharp
differences
make
clear
that,even
though
the
reduction
rate
for
fathers
is
higher
than
expected,mothers
still
face
particular
career
challenges.
23.
What
makes
many
STEM
employees
change
their
jobs?
A.
Worrying
about
their
family.
B.
The
attraction
of
part-time
jobs.
C.
Being
tired
of
the
former
jobs.
D.
The
heavy
burden
at
home
and
work.
24.
Which
statement
may
Erin
Cech
agree
with?
A.
Working
at
home
may
be
a
popular
choice.
B.
Increasing
welfare
may
keep
STEM
parents.
C.
People
with
families
should
leave
STEM.
D.
STEM
professionals
should
obey
the
rules.
25.
How
many
new
mothers
among
the
labor
force
worked
full
time
in
2018?
A.
69%.
B.
76%
C.
57%.
D.
31%.
26.
What
does
the
author
want
to
stress
by
listing
the
sharp
differences?
A
Too
many
fathers
leave
STEM.
B.
It's
hard
for
mothers
to
make
a
balance.
C.
STEM
jobs
are
no
longer
popular.
D.
It's
impossible
to
have
a
successful
career.
D
Recently,
few
samples
of
mice
with
diabetes(糖尿病)in
an
experiment
showed
signs
of
recovery.
Then
there
arose
much
discussion
regarding
the
morality
of
such
animal-testing
procedures,
especially
since
many
unfortunate
samples
lost
lives.
Is
it
moral
and
necessary
to
make
sacrifices
to
benefit
the
majority?
Or
are
these
procedures
merely
an
immoral
and
unnecessary
waste
of
lives
Some
people
assume
that
it
is
acceptable
to
make
sacrifices
for
the
greater
benefits
because
it
can
provide
a
more
accurate
insight
to
promote
the
progress
of
science.
Through
the
test,we
are
able
to
obtain
more
accurate
and
reliable
results
that
can
lead
to
beneficial
scientific
progress
to
help
the
majority.
Scientists
believe
that
sacrificing
real
animal
samples
can
give
more
accurate
insights
compared
to
abstract
computer
modeling.
For
example,
researchers
who
have
conducted
experiments
on
mice
for
Parkinson's
disease
have
found
more
promising
results
which
could
reverse
the
symptoms
of
this
previously
incurable
disease.
Therefore,
the
long-term
benefits
are
more
important
than
the
short-term
sacrifices.
However,
others
have
argued
that
these
acts
are
morally
inappropriate
especially
since
we
have
advanced
to
the
point
where
there
are
more
moral
alternatives
at
present.
They
believe
that
everything
has
an
alternative
as
long
as
effort
and
money
are
placed.
With
the
presence
of
better
and
more
moral
alternatives,
there
is
no
reason
and
moral
room
to
sacrifice,
even
if
it
is
for
the
larger
benefits.
In
all,the
samples'
sacrifice
is
unavoidable
due
to
their
potential
to
attain
great
scientific
progress.
Research
has
shown
that
the
cases
having
better
and
more
moral
alternatives
are
in
rare
exception,
and
most
alternatives
actually
end
up
compromising
other
moral
boundaries
in-
stead.
However,
if
there
exist
such
alternatives
to
some
of
the
scientific
procedures,
we
should
try.

refer
to?
A.
Morality.
B.
Progress.
C.
Sacrificing
samples.
D.
Relieving
the
symptoms
of
the
disease.
29.
What
can
be
inferred
from
the
last
paragraph?
A.
Mice-testing
experiments
are
illegal.
B.
There
is
no
moral
debate
about
animal
testing.
C.
Scientists
decide
not
to
use

still
have
to

___31___
There

___32___
The
natural

___33___
Eating
good
meals
is
also
important.
When
you

You
might

when
you

of

well.
The
same

Researching
your

a

___35___
If

pessimistic
about
a
game,for

he
might

doing
so.
If
he
is
very
nervous
then
he
might
be

If
he

what
he

His
confidence
can
also

how
the

him.
A.
It

factors.
B.
It

C.
Also
there

girl’s
mother
was
not
injured.
She
thanked
them
for
helping
her
daughter
feel
better(女孩的母亲没有受伤。她感谢他们让她的女儿感觉好些了)”可知,划线词所在句子意为“他们都笑了”,chuckled意为“笑了”。故选C。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段句子“He
saw
she
was
holding
several
bottles

C
Just
ask
any
new
parent:
Adding
a
baby
to
a
household
can
also
add
stress
to
a
career.
Now,a
new
study
backs
that
up
with
some
astonishing
numbers:
After
science,technology,engineering,and
mathematics(STEM)professionals
become
parents,43%of
women
and
23%
of
men
switch
fields,transition(转变)to
part-time
work,or
leave
the
workforce
entirely.
Many
researchers
and
parents
already
knew
that
STEM
can
be
unwelcoming
to
parents,particularly
mothers.
But“the
considerable
departure
was
astonishing,”says
Erin
Cech,an
assistant
professor
of
sociology
at
the
University
of
Michigan
in
Ann
Arbor
and
lead
author
of
the
study,published
in
the
Proceedings
of
the
National
Academy
of
Sciences.
For
both
genders,“the
proportions
were
higher
than
we
expected.

The
surprisingly
high
reduction
rate
for
men
also
highlights
that“parenthood
in
STEM
is
not
just
a
mothers'issue;it's
a
worker
issue,”Cech
says.
She
hopes
that
the
findings“might
motivate
changes,"such
as
more
paid
parental
leave
from
both
government
and
employers
and
policies
that
better
support
flexible
work
time
without
a
tight
routine.
“We
are
not
suggesting
that
people
who
want
families
should
avoid
STEM;that's
not
the
solution,”she
emphasizes.
By
2018,78%
of
new
fathers
were
still
working
in
STEM,the
vast
majority
full
time.
For
new
mothers,68%
were
still
in
STEM,but
only
57%
worked
full
time.
For
professionals
without
children,on
the
other
hand,84%
of
men
and
76%
of
women
were
predicted
to
still
be
working
in
STEM
full
time
in
2018.
For
the
new
parents
across
all
fields,16%
of
women
were
working
part-time
and
15%
had
left
the
workforce,as
compared
with
just
2%
and
3%,respectively,for
men.
These
sharp
differences
make
clear
that,even
though
the
reduction
rate
for
fathers
is
higher
than
expected,mothers
still
face
particular
career
challenges.
23.
What
makes
many
STEM
employees
change
their
jobs?
A.
Worrying
about
their
family.
B.
The
attraction
of
part-time
jobs.
C.
Being
tired
of
the
former
jobs.
D.
The
heavy
burden
at
home
and
work.
24.
Which
statement
may
Erin
Cech
agree
with?
A.
Working
at
home
may
be
a
popular
choice.
B.
Increasing
welfare
may
keep
STEM
parents.
C.
People
with
families
should
leave
STEM.
D.
STEM
professionals
should
obey
the
rules.
25.
How
many
new
mothers
among
the
labor
force
worked
full
time
in
2018?
A.
69%.
B.
76%
C.
57%.
D.
31%.
26.
What
does
the
author
want
to
stress
by
listing
the
sharp
differences?
A.
Too
many
fathers
leave
STEM.
B.
It's
hard
for
mothers
to
make
a
balance.
C.
STEM
jobs
are
no
longer
popular.
D.
It's

【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。主要内容是以STEM为例,阐述了家庭和工作给女性们带来的巨大压力,女性(尤其是新妈妈)全职比例与男性相较较低。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的Just
ask
any
new
parent:
Adding
a
baby
to
a
household
can
also
add
stress
to
a
career.
给家里添个孩子也会给职业生涯增加压力。由此可推知,是家庭和工作的重担让STEM员工改变了他们的工作,故选D。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的She
hopes
that
the
findings
“might
motivate

as
more
paid
parental
leave
from
both
government

employers
and
policies

flexible
work
time
without
a
tight
routine.Cech希望这些发现“可能”会激励变化,比如来自于政府和雇主的更多带薪产假等政策、更好地支持没有严格常规要求的灵活的工作时间等政策。由此可以推知Erin
Cech可能会同意“增加福利可以留住STEM”这个观点,故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的For
the
new
parents
across
all
fields,16%
of
women
were
working
part-time
and
15%
had
left
the
workforce,as
compared
with
just
2%
and
3%,respectively,for
men.在所有领域的新父母们,16%的女性是兼职工作,15%的人离职,由此可以推算出,在2018年全职工作的新母亲所占比率为100%-(16%+15%)=69%,故选A。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的These
sharp
differences
make
clear
that,even
though
the
reduction
rate
for
fathers
is
higher
than
expected,mothers
still
face
particular
career
challenges.
这些明显的差异表明,即使父亲的复位率高于预期,母亲仍然面临特定职业的挑战。由此可知,作者想通过列举这些明显的差异来强调母亲们很难做到平衡,故选B。
D
Recently,
few
samples
of
mice
with
diabetes(糖尿病)in
an
experiment
showed
signs
of
recovery.
Then
there
arose
much
discussion
regarding
the
morality
of
such
animal-testing
procedures,
especially
since
many
unfortunate
samples
lost
lives.
Is
it
moral
and
necessary
to
make
sacrifices
to
benefit
the
majority?
Or
are
these
procedures
merely
an
immoral
and
unnecessary
waste
of
lives
Some
people
assume
that
it
is
acceptable
to
make
sacrifices
for
the
greater
benefits
because
it
can
provide
a
more
accurate
insight
to
promote
the
progress
of
science.
Through
the
test,we
are
able
to
obtain
more
accurate
and
reliable
results
that
can
lead
to
beneficial
scientific
progress
to
help
the
majority.
Scientists
believe
that
sacrificing
real
animal
samples
can
give
more
accurate
insights
compared
to
abstract
computer
modeling.
For
example,
researchers
who
have
conducted
experiments
on
mice
for
Parkinson's
disease
have
found
more
promising
results
which
could
reverse
the
symptoms
of
this
previously
incurable
disease.
Therefore,
the
long-term
benefits
are
more
important
than
the
short-term
sacrifices.
However,
others
have
argued
that
these
acts
are
morally
inappropriate
especially
since
we
have
advanced
to
the
point
where
there
are
more
moral
alternatives
at
present.
They
believe
that
everything
has
an
alternative
as
long
as
effort
and
money
are
placed.
With
the
presence
of
better
and
more
moral
alternatives,
there
is
no
reason
and
moral
room
to
sacrifice,
even
if
it
is
for
the
larger
benefits.
In
all,the
samples'
sacrifice
is
unavoidable
due
to
their
potential
to
attain
great
scientific
progress.
Research
has
shown
that
the
cases
having
better
and
more
moral
alternatives
are
in
rare
exception,
and
most
alternatives
actually
end
up
compromising
other
moral
boundaries
in-
stead.
However,
if
there
exist
such
alternatives
to
some
of
the
scientific
procedures,
we
should
try.
27.

C.

on
their

D.
To

28.
What
does
the

"it"
in

2
refer
to?
A.
Morality.
B.
Progress.
C.
Sacrificing
samples.
D.

the
symptoms
of
the

29.
What
can
be
inferred
from
the

A.
Mice-testing

B.
There

C.

【28题详解】
词义猜测题。根据上文Some
people
assume
that
it
is
acceptable
to
make
sacrifices
for
the
greater
benefits
because可知有些人认为为了更大的利益而做出牺牲是可以接受的,因为牺牲实验标本可以提供更准确的洞见来促进科学的进步。故“it”在此处指代的是“牺牲实验标本”。故选C。
【29题详解】

samples'
sacrifice
is
unavoidable
due
to
their
potential
to
attain
great
scientific
progress.(总之,样本的牺牲是不可避免的,因为他们有潜力取得巨大的科学进步。)”可知,研究人员仍然不得不为了科学而牺牲动物。故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段可知,本文主要围绕“我们是否能够以科学的名义为了大利而牺牲那些实验标本”的话题展开论述。有人觉得这种牺牲值得,有人觉得从道德上来说这种牺牲是不可取的,最后作者写到为了取得巨大的科学进步,研究人员仍然不得不为了科学而牺牲动物,故C项为最佳标题。

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章分析了在科学技术迅猛发展的今天,仍然还存在着贫困人口的原因。
【详解】1.考查冠词。句意:尽管这些年在科学上取得了很大的进步,仍然有许多人生活在贫困条件下。progress为不可数名词,不用冠词a进行修饰。故将a去掉。
2.考查非谓语动词。句意同上。句子已有谓语动词are,此处需用非谓语动词作定语,people和live为逻辑上的主谓关系,需用现在分词形式。故将live改为living。
3.考查名词。句意:他们靠收集和出售旧物为生。thing为可数名词,此处表示泛指,且没有冠词限定,需用名词复数形式。故将thing改为things。
4.考查介词。句意:他们的孩子无法上学,因为他们没有足够的钱送孩子去上学。there为副词,前面不需要加介词,to是多余的。故将to去掉。
5.考查助动词。句意:你认为为什么现在仍有那么多人遭受贫困?根据时间状语“now”可知,本句应使用一般现在时,由于此处用在特殊疑问句词why之后,主语you之前,构成的是特殊疑问句,需用助动词do。故在you前面加do。
6.考查介词。句意:答案在于人口爆炸。lie
in为固定短语,意为“在于”。故将on改为in。
7.考查代词。句意:一位发展中国家的总统曾经说过;“贫困是我们的责任,因为我们过去总是无休止地‘生’孩子。”本句符合强调句“it
is/was
+被强调部分+that/who+句子其他成分”这一结构,强调的是句子的主语,需用we。故将us改为we。
8.考查名词。句意同上。child为可数名词,此处表示泛指,且没有冠词限定,需用名词复数形式。故将child改为children。
9.考查代词。句意:虽然这几个字听起来很简单,但他们清楚地指出了人口爆炸的原因之一。修饰复数名词words,需用代词this的复数形式these修饰。故将this改为these。
10.考查副词。句意同上。修饰动词短语pointed
out需用副词clearly作状语。故将clear改为clearly。

【答案】Conflicts
with
others
are
common
in
everyday
life.
During
the
basketball
game
yesterday
afternoon,
Su
Hua
and
Li
Jiang
bumped
into
each
other,
trying
to
catch
the
ball.
Then
they
started
shouting
and
yelling,
and
it
turned
into
a
horrible
quarrel.
To
be
honest,
it
was
Su’s
fault
but
Li
was
also
to
blame—they
were
not
calm
enough
and
both
said
some
really
mean
things.
They
cared
too
much
about
winning
and
losing.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
blocking,
pushing
and
bumping
are
just
part
of
a
tough
game.
To
avoid
such
conflicts,
we
should
be
kind
to
one
another,
which
is
essential

enjoying
a
harmonious
life.
It
is
also
a
virtue
to
forgive
and
forget,
especially
in
such
a
competitive
and
stressful
society.
Instead
of
blaming
each
other,
we
should
communicate
more
and
put
ourselves
in
others’
place.
Don’t
be
self-centered
and
try
to
be
considerate.
We
must
learn
to
handle
conflicts
calmly
and
wisely.
