(C)
Something’s
happening
at
the
lowest
point
on
our
planet,some
1,388
feet
below
sea
level.
The
Dead
Sea,
a
salt
lake
close
to
Israel,
Jordan
and
the
West
Bank,
is
shrinking
at
an
alarming
rate—about
3.3
feet
per
year,
according
to
the
environmentalist
group
EcoPeace
Middle
East.
“It’s
not
just
like
one
country
is
punishing
the
Dead
Sea;
it’s
more
like
the
whole
region,”
said
photographer
Moritz
Küstner,
who
visited
the
area
in
February
to
work
on
his
series
“The
Dying
Dead
Sea”.
The
Dead
Sea
needs
water
from
the
other
natural
sources
surrounding
it,
such
as
the
Jordan
River
basin.
But
around
the
1960s,
the
courses
of
some
water
sources
it
relied
upon
were
diverted.
Israel,
for
instance,
built
a
pipeline
during
that
time
so
it
could
supply
water
throughout
the
country.
Mineral
extraction(提取)
industries
are
another
main
reason
why
the
water
levels
are
declining,
experts
say.
The
Dead
Sea’s
minerals
have
been
popular
for
their
medical
power
and
can
often
be
found
in
cosmetics(化妆品)
and
other
consumer
products.
And
then,
of
course,
there’s
the
Middle
East’s
hot,
dry
climate,
which
makes
it
difficult
for
the
lake
to
refill
itself.
Last
year,
Israel
and
Jordan
signed
a
$900
million
deal
in
an
effort
to
stabilize
the
Dead
Sea’s
water
levels.
It
involves
building
a
canal
from
the
Red
Sea
to
the
Dead
Sea
which
would
be
able
to
not
only
supply
water
to
Israel
and
Jordan
but
also
to
pump
much
needed
water—some
300
million
cubic
meters
annually—into
the
Dead
Sea.
“This
is
the
most
important
and
significant
agreement
since
the
peace
treaty
with
Jordan
(in
1994),”
said
Silvan
Shalom,
Israel’s
energy
and
water
resources
minister
at
the
time.
Whether
the
canal—estimated
to
take
three
years
to
complete—will
work
out
positively
and
as
planned
remains
to
be
seen.
For
now,
Küstner
shows
us
that
the
Dead
Sea
remains
very
much
a
place
of
interest,
with
people
from
all
over
the
world
going
there
to
swim
in
its
salty
waters.
8.How
many
reasons
for
the
Dead
Sea’s
shrinking
does
the
author
mention
in
the
passage?
A.One.
B.Two.

9.What

the
underlined
word
“diverted”
in
paragraph
3

A.Switch.
B.Improve.
C.Accomplish.
D.Repair.
10.Which
of
the
following
statements
is
TRUE
according
to
the
passage?
A.The
Dead
Sea
is
drying
out
causing
water
shortage
to
humans.
B.Küstner
visited
the
Dead
Sea
to
shoot
TV
series
about
people’s
life.
C.The
Dead
Sea’s
minerals
have
been
used
in
some
products.
D.The
Dead
Sea’s
water
levels
have
been
stabilized
by
building
a
canal.
11.What
is
the
passage
mainly
about?
A.How
the
Dead
Sea’s
water
levels’
decline
influences
human
beings.
B.How
important
the
Dead
Sea
is
in
Israel,Jordan
and
the
West
Bank.
C.What
we
should
do
to
save
the
Dead
Sea
from
being
destroyed.
D.Why
the
Dead
Sea
is
dying
and
the
measure
taken
to
save
it.

There
is
something
to
be
said
for
being
a
generalist,
even
if
you
are
a
specialist.
Knowing
a
little
about
a
lot
of
things
that
interest
you
can
add
to
the
richness
of
a
whole,
well-lived
life.
Society
pushes
us
to
specialize,
to
become
experts.
This
requires
commitment
to
a
particular
occupation,
branch
of
study
or
research.
The
drawback
to
being
specialists
is
we
often
come
to
know
more
and
more
about
less
and
less.
There
is
a
great
deal
of
pressure
to
master
one's
field.
You
may
pursue
training,
degrees,
or
increasing
levels
of
responsibility
at
work.
Then
you
discover
the
pressure
of
having
to
keep
up.
Some
people
seem
willing
to
work
around
the
clock
in
their
narrow
specialty.
But
such
commitment
can
also
weaken
a
sense
of
freedom.
These
specialists
could
work
at
the
office
until
ten
each
night,
then
look
back
and
realize
they
would
have
loved
to
have
gone
home
and
enjoyed
the
sweetness
of
their
family
and
friends,
or
traveled
to
exciting
places,
meeting
interesting
people.
Mastering
one
thing
to
the
exclusion
of
others
can
hold
back
your
true
spirit.
Generalists,
on
the
other
hand,
know
a
lot
about
a
wide
range
of
subjects
and
view
the
whole
with
all
its
connections.
They
are
people
of
ability,
talent,
and
enthusiasm
who
can
bring
their
broad
perspective(视角)into
specific
fields
of
expertise(专长).The
doctor
who
is
also
a
poet
and
philosopher
is
a
superior
doctor,
one
who
can
give
so
much
more
to
his
patients
than
just
good
medical
skills.
Things
are
connected.
Let
your
expertise
in
one
field
fuel
your
passions
in
all
related
areas.
Some
of
your
interests
may
not
appear
to
be
connected
but,
once
you
explore
their
depths,
you
discover
that
they
are.
My
editor
Toni,
who
is
also
a
writer,
has
edited
several
history
books.
She
has
decided
to
study
Chinese
history.
Fascinated
by
the
structural
beauty
of
the
Forbidden
City
as
a
painter,
she
is
equally
interested
to
learn
more
about
Chinese
philosophy.
"I
don't
know
where
it
will
lead,
but
I'm
excited
I'm
on
this
pursuit.
These
expansions
into
new
worlds
help
us
by
giving
us
new
perspectives.
We
begin
to
see
the
interconnectedness
of
one
thing
to
another
in
all
aspects
of
our
life,
of
ourselves
and
the
universe.
Develop
broad,
general
knowledge
and
experience.
The
universe
is
all
yours
to
explore
and
enjoy.
12.To
become
a
specialist,
one
may
have
to_______.
A.avoid
responsibilities
at
work
B.narrow
his
range
of
knowledge
C.know
more
about
the
society
D.broaden
his
perspective
on
life
13.According
to
the
author,
a
superior
doctor
is
one
who
________.
A.is
fully
aware
of
his
talent
and
ability
B.is
a
pure
specialist
in
medicine
C.brings
knowledge
of
other
fields
to
work
D.should
love
poetry
and
philosophy
14.What
does
the
author
intend
to
show
with
the
example
of
Toni?
A.Seemingly
unrelated
interests
are
in
a
way
connected.
B.Passion
alone
does
not
ensure
a
person's
success.
C.In-depth
exploration
makes
discoveries
possible.
D.Everyone
has
a
chance
to
succeed
in
their
pursuit.
15.What
could
be
the
best
title
for
the
passage?
A.Specialist
or
Generalist:
Hard
to

B.Turn
a
Generalist
into

Keeping
her
arms
pressed
to
her
sides,
Trudy
stood
???

,
much
like
a
statue,
afraid
to
move
in.
"Why?"
"I
am
the

I
know

broken
when

"I
used
to
be
clumsy
too,
a
real
ugly
little
duck,
"
Mrs.
Willow
smiled.
"But
I
grew
up
to
be
a
swan(白天鹅).
"
"But
I
don't
think
I
shall,
"
Trudy
doubted.
"I'll
just
grow
up
to
be

"
"Not
if
you
do
as
I
did.
You
have
to
keep
telling
yourself
that
inside,
where
it
matters,
you're
really
a
swan.

"I'm
a
swan,

Trudy????

and
took
the
medicine,
heading
for
home.
Next
morning
Mum's
cold
was

better.
"If

then
her

must
work
as
well.
"
Trudy
couldn't
wait
to
try
it
out.
In
the
school
playground
some
children
stood
looking
up
into
the
chestnut
tree.
Lisa
was
in
tears.
"What's
the
matter?"
asked
Trudy.
"It's
my
kite,
"
Lisa
said,
wiping
her
eyes.

"
"I'll
get
it
down
for
you,
"
Trudy
said
kindly.
"No,
you'll
tear
it!"
Lisa
looked
???

.
"It's
a
special
Chinese

I
got
it
for
my
birthday.
"
For
a
moment
Trudy
felt
like
her

But
then
she
remembered
what
Mrs.
Willow
had
said.
It
didn't
matter
how
she
looked
outside.
Inside,
she
was
really
a
swan.
She
jumped
up
and
grabbed
the
lowest????

began
to
climb.
"Swans
never
rush,
"
she
told
herself.
It
took
her
ages,
but
she
didn't
rush.
At
last
she
managed
to????

But
now
she
had
to
climb
down
again
using
only
one
hand.
Very,

swung
herself
down
to

ground.
The
kite
was
safe!
"Thanks,
Trudy.
"
Lisa
showed
it
to
the
others.
"Look,
it's
all
right!"
Trudy
felt
very,
very
proud
and
different.
Smiling
at
everyone,
