Step 1 Objective
Listen to learn the problems Wei Ming talks about and the advices Alice gives to him.
To learn new words: member, pressure, compete…
To learn to face the difficulties and solve the problems
Step 2 Revision
1. Daily greeting.

1. Many of them are learning exam skills so that they can get into a good high school and later a good university.

so that & so… that…
so that引导目的状语从句,可与in order that 换用。从句位于中常用情态动词may/might ,can/could ,should , would 连用,意为“以便,为了,使能够”。
e.g. They got up early so that they could catch the early bus. (翻译)
为了能赶上早班车,他们早早就起床了。
so that也可以用来引导结果状语从句,意为“因此,结果”,这时其从句中的谓语动词不与情态动词连用。所表示的结果往往同主句有因果关系;
so…that…所表示的结果往往表明so后面形容词或副词和程度。
e.g. He didn’t plan his time well, so that he didn’t finish his work in time.
他没有把时间计划好,结果没有按时完成这项工作。 (没按时完成这项工作的原因是没计划好时间)
It’s so hot that I can’t sleep. 天气热得我不能入睡。 (天气热到人不能入睡的程度。)
so…that…引导结果状语从句。
so后面加形容词或副词,如此……以至于……。
e.g. This book is so interesting that everyone wants to read it.
He ran so fast that I couldn’t catch up with him. (翻译)
这本书很有趣,人人都想看看。
他跑得那么快,我没赶上他。

cut out 删除;删去
cut sth. out相当于stop doing。
e.g. I cut out the paragraph in this article. 我删除了这篇文章的一个段落。
与cut有关的短语:
cut out 切断 cut off 减少……的数量, 停止向某人供应某物 cut up 切碎
3. Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development.
医生说太大的压力对孩子的发展是没有好处的。
pressure 压力,是不可数名词。

表建议的句型:

Work on 4a:
1. Fill in the blanks with although, so that or until.
2. 方法指导:
1) 点拨:so that 意为“因此”,引导目的状语从句,表示前一句所表述的动作的目的。在从句中常使用can /could / will/ may/ should等词。
拓展:so… that… 意为“如此……以至于”,常用于结果状语从句,表示上文动作所产生 结果。
2) 点拨:句意“尽管你现在没有朋友,但不久你就会有朋友的。”although是连词,意为“尽管……但是”,同though一样引导让步状语从句。
它们引导的让步状语从句既可放在主句之前,也可放在主句之后。另外,在英语中although 或though不能和but同时出现在一个句子中,但它们之间可进行句型转换。如:
Although / Though the weather is sunny, I feel cold.
I feel cold although / though the weather is sunny.
Although / Though it is raining, but they are still playing outside. (×)
→Although / Though it is raining, they are still playing outside. = It is raining, but they are still playing outside. (√ )
3) 点拨:until 用于否定句中,表示句子的动作直到until短语所表示的时间才开始发生,即表示动作的起点。一般译为“直到……才” 。
拓展:until 用在肯定句中,表示句子的动作一直持续到until短语所表示的时间为止,即表示动作的终点。一般可译为“直到……时(为止)”或“在……以前”。在这种用法中,句子的谓语动词必须是持续动词(非瞬间动词),
e.g. She was a bank clerk until the war, when she trained as a nurse. 她战前是个银行职员,战时受训当了护士。
4) 点拨:句意“尽管他是你的最好的朋友,但你还是应当告诉他,抄袭别人的作业是不对的。”,可知空格处应用though 。

Review the expressions and sentences.

A magazine interviewed some parents about after-school classes for children. Read the opinions below and make notes on your own opinions.
List the main views:
1. After-school classes can help kids get into a good university.
2. I want my child to be a successful person.
3. It’s good for children to start learning from a young age.
Ss talk with their partners about these views.
Step 4 Asking and answering
1. Ss say if they agree or disagree with the views above. Then give their reasons.
2. Let some Ss say their reasons:
S1: I disagree. Many factors may influence in one’s life. Even though one goes to a good university, he may still not be successful.
S2: I agree. Many great people learn things from a very young age. If the child is gifted in some area, it’s helpful to learn it from a young age.
S3: I disagree. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard. Parents shouldn’t send their small kids to all kinds of classes. They shouldn’t always compare their children with other children. I believe it’s better to let the kids be kids.

因此,人称为第一人称;时态应用一般现在时态;
首先,应开门见山地描述课后辅导班这一社会现象。

One possible version
I don’t agree with the idea of sending kids to after-school classes because all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. It’s not good for a child’s development. In my opinion, kids should have time to relax and think for themselves, too. I think it’s better that parents shouldn’t compare their children with other children. It’s crazy and not fair.

1. Look at these problems. Do you think they are serious or not Ss discuss with their partners and give some advice.

guess v. 猜测;估计 e.g. Let us guess the height of the building.让我们来猜一下这个建筑物的高度。
(2) Although she’s wrong, it’s not a big deal.
big deal是英语中的一个固定搭配,表示 “重要的事情或状况”,多用于非正式交流。作否定用法时,常说It’s not a big deal或It’s no big deal.表示说话人并不认为某事有什么了不起。
e.g. There’s a soccer game on TV this evening but I don’t have to watch it. It’s no big deal. 今天晚上电视上有一场足球赛,但我不一定要看。没什么大不了的。
It’s a big deal, David, bigger than you know.

(3) Hope things work out
希望事情会好起来。
这是一种常见的表达法,表示某些不如人意的事情会随时间的推移逐渐有所改观。

1) instead adv. 代替;反而;却
e.g. Lee was ill so I went instead. 李病了,所以我去了。
辨析:
instead 是副词,常置于句子末尾。
词汇 instead instead of
意义 反而,却 代替,而不是
词性 副词 短语介词
在句中的位置 可位于句子的开头 ,这时多用逗号与句子的主体部分隔开。 在句中的位置比较灵活,其宾语多由名词、代词、 v-ing形式 或介词短语等充当。

alone独自的,独立的,单独地。 lonely寂寞的,孤寂的。

4. If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help.
offer v. 主动提出;自愿给予
offer侧重主动或愿意给予,主动提出做某事。常用结构:offer sb. sth. 或offer to do sth.
e.g. She offered me a cup of tea. 她给我端了杯茶。
He offered to go instead of me. 他主动提出代替我去。

辨析: second和secondly

7. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this .我不知道是否应该对他们说些什么。
If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help.如果你的父母亲有困难,你应该给予帮助。
If 引导宾语从句表语从句,一般放在动词后;不能放在句子开头。从句根据句子意思可用不同的时态。
e.g. I don’t know if he will come tomorrow. 我不知道他明天是否会来 。
I want to know if he is from America. 我想知道他是否来自美国。
If引导条件状语从句,含有主将从现,主将从祈,主将从情态的原则。
