The words "protect animals" appear everywhere in books and on screens, because
some animals are even in danger of dying out. But sometimes the reality can be a little
different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It's been the
first bear hunt in the state since 1994. Local officers explained that the black bear
population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two
years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
Months ago, the Swiss government allowed locals to kill a wolf. This was because the
wolf killed 38 sheep, and it was a great loss to some local farmers. Days ago in China,
three old men were caught by the police for killing a serow (鬣羚 ), a kind of protected
animal. They said they killed the animal because it ate the plants they grew.
However, these stories don't always mean that animal protection stops because of
human interests, especially when it is related to economic development. A man named
Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and
about 300 bears. His base also offered jobs to local people.
"There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give
more attention to the environment or human development," said Robert May, a British
expert at Oxford University. "But we shouldn't push either one to the side, as the future is
uncertain."

( ) 49.Which of the following statements might Robert May agree with?

( ) 50.In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear?

C
If you look in the mirror every day and pay attention only to what's wrong with your
body, you're not alone. Many people are dealing with body image issues.
“ How does the world treat unattractive girls?" became a popular hashtag (标签 ) on
Sina Weibo in March.
The hashtag resonated with many girls who shared their personal experiences. One
internet user talked about how her friends would often cut her image out of group pictures
because they thought she was too fat. It was clear that these "body-shaming" situations
became too common.
"My nose is not high enough, my chin is short and flat, and my eyes are small," Tang
Yuqi, a college student, told China Youth Daily. She doesn't even answer the door without
putting on makeup (化妆品 ) first. "I just can't accept myself if I'm not wearing it," Tang
added.
What makes this anxiety among young people?
As the country's economy has quickly developed, people are more likely to be affected
by what others think of them, noted CGTN.
More time spent online also means greater influenced by advertisements such as "A4
paper-thin waists (腰 )" or "chopstick legs". These impossible standard (标准 ) only lead to
young people's anxiety and an unhealthy idea of perfect.
Tang Xuemeng, 30, often feels pressure. " I live with that struggle every day. When I
was a teenager, I always doubted if my face was too big, if my nose was too wide. And
now, I'm afraid of getting old," Tang told CGTN.
The anxiety over appearance and shape has pushed some people into illness.
According to Beat, the UK's leading eating disorder charity, the search of thinness is the
main reason in worsening the illness and preventing recovery. Some people even go
through surgery (手术 ) just to achieve “beautiful”.
But beauty doesn't come from a makeup brush or a thinner waist. Growing taller and
having perfect skin isn't the solution. The fact that every person is different is something to
be celebrated.
A line from China's first female monologue drama (独白剧 ) called Hear Her (《听见她
说 》 ) says it perfectly: “I am not perfect. Perfection is boring. I am perfect when I fully
realize myself.”

mean?
A. Was ignored by. B. Embarrassed.
C. Paid attention to. D. Met with agreement among.

the text?

C. The struggle they have experienced. D. Their desire for easier success.
( ) 53. According to Beat, what plays a leading role in worsening people's illness
related to the anxiety over appearance and shape?
A. The feeling of insecurity. B. Other people's opinions.
C. The desire for being thin. D. The popularity of plastic surgery.
( ) 54. According to the text, what can people do to let go anxiety related to body
image?
A. Have plastic surgery. B. Accept their differences.
C. Work to realize their dream. D. Stop wearing makeup.
( ) 55. Which sentence is NOT an example of body-shaming?
A. You are so skinny, you're so fortunate you can simply eat and eat.
B. Girls will never like short boys, you should start playing basketball to grow 5
centimeters taller.

bodies.
