Part of northern California had become an inferno(火海) in the latest big fire.A nearby town,Paradise, was reduced to ash.Nearly 50 people are confirmed dead and over 200 missing.Six of the ten most destructive fires in California’s history have occurred in the past decade. Last year was the most destructive year on record, until this year. Why is the Golden State so flammable??
There are three reasons why California has been surrounded by flames.First, the climate is becoming warmer. This has led to snow melting earlier, drier landscapes and a longer season when fires are likely to occur.
A second reason is that more people live in flammable places.Since the 1990s 60% of new homes in California,Washington and Oregon have been built in spaces next to nature. These areas, which environmentalists call the “wildland-urban interface”,are at higher risk of wildfire.
A third reason is that there is more fuel. Before western settlers arrived, fires used to happen often and naturally, which made less fuel available for future fires. For the past century fires have been controlled well. This has led to a build-up of dry brush, and makes the average wildfire much likelier to turn into a big one.
Putting out the flame is the most immediate task for California, but not the last. Many survivors will want to rebuild their homes exactly where they were.Californians will also want to ensure that utility companies(公用事业公司) are acting and investing responsibly.Investigations into what caused the fire are still going on,but some reports suggest it may have begun with sparks (火花) from lines owned by an electricity company.

Green roofs—roofs that are planted with vegetation(植被)—may improve the indoor air quality of commercial buildings by cutting the amount of ozone coming into the buildings from the outside, according to new research from Portland State University.
The findings add to the already known environmental benefits of green roofs, including reducing carbon dioxide, decreasing storm water runoff and cutting down on urban heat, according to PSU researchers.
The researchers from PSU’s departments of Mechanical and Materials Engineering,Biology and the university’s Honors College, set up measuring devices on the roof of a big-box retail(零售) store in North Portland that was split between a green roof and a more conventional white roof.
They measured the air coming into the building from outdoor intake vents(通风孔),and found that the air coming in from the green roof area had modestly lower ozone levels than the air coming in from the unplanted area. They found that the vegetation trapped and filtered the ozone in the outdoor air.
The trapping effect is a process known as dry deposition,in which airborne particles collect or deposit themselves on solid surfaces. It’s a natural process that is key to removing pollutants from the atmosphere.
The study was conducted over a two-day period. The authors said the findings bring about a longer-term study—one that could include measuring other pollutants as well as ozone.

About 4 million children worldwide develop asthma each year because of nitrogen dioxide air pollution, according to a study published today by researchers at the George Washington University. The study estimates that 64 percent of these new cases of asthma occur in urban areas. The study is the first to quantify the worldwide burden of new pediatric(儿科的) asthma cases linked to traffic-related nitrogen dioxide by using a method that takes into account high exposures to this pollutant that occur near busy roads, said Susan C.Anenberg,PhD,the senior author of the study.
“Our findings suggest that millions of new cases of pediatric asthma could be prevented in cities around the world by reducing air pollution,” said Anenberg.“Improving access to cleaner forms of transportation, like electrified public transport, cycling and walking, would not only bring down NO2 levels, but would also reduce asthma, enhance physical fitness, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.”
Asthma is a disease that makes it hard to breathe when the lung’s airways are inflamed. An estimated 235 million people worldwide currently have asthma, which can cause wheezing as well as life-threatening attacks.
The World Health Organization calls air pollution “a major environmental risk to health” and has established Air Quality Guidelines for NO2 and other air pollutants. The researchers estimate that most children lived in areas below the current NO2 guideline. They also found that about 92 percent of the new pediatric asthma cases that were caused by NO2 occurred in areas that already meet the WHO guideline.
“That finding suggests that the WHO guideline for NO2 may need to be re-evaluated to make sure it is sufficiently protective of children’s health,” said Pattanun Achakulwisut,PhD,lead author of the paper.
Additional research must be done to more persuasively identify the factors leading to asthma within complex traffic emissions. This effort will help to improve the estimates of new asthma cases tied to traffic emissions.
12.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Struck. B.Enlarged.
C.Swollen. D.Broken.
13.What do we know about the Air Quality Guidelines of WHO?
A.The Air Quality Guidelines are not reasonable.
B.WHO established Air Quality Guidelines only for NO2.
C.The minority of children’s living environment meet the current WHO guidelines.
D.According to the guidelines,92 percent of the new pediatric asthma cases are caused by NO2.
14.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Asthma is threatening children’s life.
B.WHO established Air Quality Guidelines.
C.Air pollution is a serious problem nowadays.
D.Air pollution makes children suffer from asthma.
15.According to the study, how should the new cases of pediatric asthma be stopped?
A.Invent new drug.
B.Cut air pollution.
C.Raise people’s awareness.
D.Reduce electrified public transport.

第二节 概要写作(25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure(血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some,an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife.A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress(紧张) levels and blood pressure in people—half of them pet owners—while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic(心算) or held a hand in ice water.Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife,a close friend or with a pet.People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more released (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits.Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs who were put on diet-and-exercise programs;a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds,or 5% of their body weight.Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight.Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but,say researchers, got more exercise overall—mostly with their dogs—and found it worth doing.
