[原创]Nowadays, people usually shake hands when they meet each other. Do the Chinese always greet others like this? In fact, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we Chinese use different ways to greet others now.
There were several kinds of greetings in ancient China. Among them the fist-and-palm salute (拱手礼) was a quite common one, with a history of about 3,000 years. It was first used by people in the Western Zhou Dynasty. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, their hands were always ready to hold something used for fighting. Holding out both hands showed that people could feel relaxed.
When people meet, men usually use their left hand to hold the right one. It's believed that people considered the left as the important side for men in Chinese history. While for women, the important side is the right. So when they give the fist-and-palm salute, they should put their right hand on the top. When someone presents the fist-and-palm salute to you, you are supposed to do it back as well.
In many wuxia or kung fu TV series and movies, people greet each other with the hold-fist salute, or baoquan in Chinese. The gesture (手势) is that the right hand is made a fist, while the left hand is to cover the right fist. It's similar to the fist-and-palm salute, but they are different. Baoquan is widely used among kung fu masters and students. So, don't make a mistake.

But chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions.Generally, people should not make a noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country would be rude.
There are also some superstitions (迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香) that Chinese use to honor the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.

The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come "around 3:00", that means you can arrive a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time.
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend's house. This could be a box of chocolates for you to share, or maybe a CD that you can enjoy together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his or her house.
When you visit your friend's house, you may also meet his or her parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect (尊重) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to call them madam or sir.
It is a cool thing to visit a friend's house. Be polite to your friend and your friend's parents, and you will be invited again.

[2019贵阳中考改编] Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should
never shake hands in a doorway, and if you're travelling in Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards — but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also,it's rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you.You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and if you eat with your close friends usually it's OK to start smoking after eating, which you mustn't do in the UK.When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia —that's bad luck.
When you're travelling in Asia,if someone invites you to his or her home, don't forget to take off your shoes when you arrive.
With so much to think about,it's not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries — or you might just decide to stay at home!

Dear Mike,
It's fantastic that you will come to China and spend the Mid-Autumn Festival with a Chinese family.
August 15 of the lunar calendar is the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival. It is in the middle of the fall of the year, so it is called the Mid-Autumn Festival.
On that day, all our family get together and have a big dinner. We also eat mooncakes, admire the full moon and guess the riddles written on the lanterns.
As a guest, you must pay enough attention and give proper praise to the host and the hostess when they're introducing the dishes. Don't use your chopsticks to pick a dish in the plate everywhere. You'd better keep quiet when eating and drinking soup.
Enjoy your stay in China.
