=Though (they were) beaten by the opposite team, they didn't lose heart and encouraged each other.

Children told to go play outdoors in new nature campaign
The Wild Network aims to get schoolchildren off their computers and outdoors to experience the wonders of the wilderness.
A campaign is being launched to encourage children to surrender 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors.
The newly formed Wild Network – a collaboration of nearly 400 organizations - is attempting to attract youngsters away from television and computer screen and into fields, woods and parks.
Organizers say it is the UK’s biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness and general wellbeing.
A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, will be shown at more than 50 cinemas across the UK from Friday. It looks at the increasingly fragile(脆弱的) link between children and nature.
Members of the network include the National Trust, RSPB, Play England and the NHS sustainable development unit.
Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said: "The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation.
"Time spent outdoors is down, roaming ranges have fallen drastically, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost."
Suggestions of how to get more time in nature including collecting conkers, camping or snail racing, and observing autumn color on trees.
From January, the network will aim to make suggestions to politicians on how government can do more to get children muddy and bright-eyed.
This is not the first time the message of less screen, more play has been brought up. Children in the 1980s were entreated to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don’t You, which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to "switch off your TV set, and go do something less boring instead".

Jack, a clerk at the local bank, was wandering alone on the street. It was a cold, silent winter night. His mind was on his wife Linda, who had been in a car accident two months ago and was now lying in a hospital bed, waiting for more money for her operation. Jack had sold everything he had, and he had tried his best to borrow money from all the people and banks he could. But the real world is cruel. A large amount of money was still needed. To Jack, it would mean a great deal of suffering to see his wife die without any help. “I have only one option left,” Jack said to himself. Then he went the bank, his workplace, again. For several days, he observed the bank and planned a theft.
The next day, he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal: he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm, the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However, at that moment, Jack was in the bathroom, He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase. He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools, he then easily opened the doors of the safes, The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later, Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.

But the most unlucky man was the manger of the bank, an old man.
根据文章第一段“The Wild Network aims to get schoolchildren off their computers and outdoors to experience the wonders of the wilderness”可知the Wild Network的创办目的是让孩子脱离电脑走向户外去体验野外生活的惊奇。故选D。
根据第一段“...aims to get schoolchildren off their computers”以及第三段“...is attempting to attract youngsters away from television and computer screen”可知该组织的创建目的是鼓励孩子每天放弃或者减少30分钟看屏幕的时间而到户外去。故选C。
根据第七段“The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation.”可知Andy Simpson认为现在的孩子们缺少与自然的接触,而第八段“Time spent outdoors is down, roaming ranges have fallen drastically, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost.” 故选A。
根据文章第一段“The Wild Network aims to get schoolchildren off their computers and outdoors to experience the wonders of the wilderness”,并结合下文内容可知,the Wild Network所鼓励的是走向户外亲近自然,A、C、D选项中所述活动均为户外的活动,而B选项为室内活动,不在其鼓励的范围之内。
根据空格前“On my first day of school”及空格后“at this new school”并结合选项可知,“他用纯正的克里奥尔语跟我打招呼”符合语境。故选C。
3. D 解析:根据第三段第一句“Sometimes he would bring in picture books, and have the two of us who were 26 to English read out loud.”
根据空格前“I couldn’t even read the title of the textbook”及空格后“I understood most questions”,可知由不会读到理解这一过程应该是我“学习”得快。故选A。
5. B 解析:picked up意为“捡起,(用车)接,接收(信号)”;put up意为“竖起,举起,张贴”;took up意为“占(时间,空间等),拿起,开始从事”;lifted up意为“举高,抬高”。
根据空格后“When we didn’t get a word 27 , he would say it to us and have us repeat it 28 we remember it.”
根据空格后的“he would say it to us and have us repeat it”,可知句意为:当我们没有说对的时候,他会示范然后让我们重复。故选A。
由空格后的“For each word we had to memorize its spelling and pronunciation”可知,老师让我们每天学习10到20个单词。故选A。
故选A。
16. D 解析:shake one’s hand= shake hands with sb.
根据“you can 39 someone by beautiful clothing for a little while”以及“a smart, educated 40 can make a much longer-lasting impression”可知是在对暂时的印象和更持久印象作比较,故而39空部分句意为:你可以通过漂亮的衣服暂时地给人留下印象。故选A。

After Jack had been gone from the bank for a while, the alarms began to ring. The police arrived at the bank very quickly, only to find no one there. The next day was a really special day for the town, which was filled with newspaper and TV reporters covering the strange theft. The clerks at the bank were busy discussing the case, of course, including Jack. The police could only promise to catch the thieves as soon as possible, even though no clues had been found yet.
But the most unlucky man was the manager of the bank, an old man. He seemed to be the only person to blame and was removed from his position. At last, with enough money for her operation, Jack's wife was saved. However, Jack felt guilty about the manager of the bank. He could not forget what he had done to the old man. His guilt deepened as time went by. Finally, he turned himself in to the police and accepted his punishment.
