One supermarket chain in Finland has come up with a way to reduce food waste. All 900 S-Market stores throughout the country knock 60 percent off already-reduced meat and fish at 9 o’clock each evening in an effort to move it off shelves before expiring (过期) at midnight.
It’s part of a two-year campaign to reduce food waste that company managers decide to call “happy hour” in the hope of drawing in regulars.
It makes customers get super-cheap food, retailers (零售商) don’t have to pay for disposal (and earn more than if they donated the food), and it eases the burden on the planet.
Reducing food waste is not often enough seen as an effective solution to the climate crisis. Energy, for example, receives more focus than food, and yet food is something that individuals can and should solve on a personal level. A recent UN report stated that a shocking one-third of food produced for human consumption never gets eaten. This equals 1.3 billion tons of food worth $ 680 billion. From the report:
“Causes of food loss and waste differ greatly between developed and developing countries, as well as between regions. Reducing this loss and waste would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve food security.
Supermarkets are well positioned to make a difference when it comes to food waste, but they have to be willing to accept some financial losses. Reducing prices on nearly-expired food is an excellent place to start, as is doing away with bulk discounts, e. g. two for the price of one, which encourages over-buying.
Individuals have a responsibility, too, to eat more of what they buy. Take a moment to look at the contents of your refrigerator and pantry (食品储藏室) before shopping and work with what you have, in order of how soon items will expire. Don’t be influenced by in-the-moment desires that are unlikely to get used in their entirety. Consider mentioning the S-Market initiative (新方案) to your local grocery store, in hopes that it, too, will consider carrying a happy hour of sorts out.
24.What does S-Market’s act result in?
A. Greater recognition. B. A win-win-win situation.
C. More financial profit. D. More new customers.
25.What can we know about food waste?
A. People are fully aware of the problem.
B. Solving it is an effective way to fight climate crisis.
C. People need to quickly find out the reason for food waste.
D. There's more food waste in developed countries than in developing countries.
26.In the last paragraph, the author advises readers to_______.
A. buy with care before shopping
B. join their local grocery stores campaign
C. come up with new ways to solve food waste
D. make sure there抯 enough space for food in the fridge
27.What is the best title for the text?
A. It Is Everyone抯 Responsibility to Solve Food Waste
B. Food Waste Hasn抰 Been Taken Seriously Enough
C. Finnish Supermarkets Use 揌appy Hour to Fight Food Waste
D. Finnish Supermarkets Sell Nearly-expired Food Uniquely

The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed until 2021. That delay offers a chance for reflection. The International Olympic Committee wants to make the games more popular with young people. To that end, it is introducing new events, such as skateboarding, surfing and climbing. Why not go further and let national teams compete at video games? Electronic sports such as “Fortnite”, are vastly more popular than strange Olympic sports like curling (冰壶).In fact, they are more appealing than most mainstream sports. Only 28% of British boys aged 16-19 watch any traditional live sports; 57% play video games.
Some may complain that e-sports are not proper sports. Many parents, observing their teenagers sitting on the sofa all day shouting 換uick, pass me the shotgun! at a screen, would agree. Yet video games are highly competitive, with professional teams that play to packed stadiums. There are perhaps only 200 tennis stars in the world who can make a living from playing in major competitions. By contrast, 揕eague of Legends", a fantasy game played by teams of five, supports over 1,000 on good wages. Its World Championship final last year was watched by 44 million people.
Those against e-sports offer moral objections, too. They are addictive. Prince Harry has called for 揊ortnite to be banned for this reason. They are violent. At a time of global disharmony, it is a bad idea to make virtual killing an Olympic sport. The Olympics aim to promote peace.
Neither of these arguments is convincing. The idea that an activity, rather than a material, can be addictive is controversial among doctors, as is the existence of a causal link (因果关系) between gaming and violence. And the belief that warlike sports have no place in the Olympics is hard to agree with history. Wrestling was introduced in 708 BC. It is still there.
28. Why is the International Olympic Committee bringing in new events?
A. To replace mainstream sports. B. To attract more young people.
C. To make up for the delay. D. To show innovations.
29. What are the figures in Paragraph 2 intended to show?
A. E-sports are proper games. B. Tennis has declined greatly.
C. Tennis players salary is lower. D. E-sport players have achieved a lot.
30. How does the author feel towards the causal link between gaming and violence?.
A. Positive. B. Sceptical.
C. Unconcerned. D. Discouraged.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce how e-sports develop.
B. To show what benefits e-sports can bring.
C. To explain why young people like playing e-sports.
D. To argue e-sports can be included in the Olympics.

Cheese and red wine are basic diets over the festive period, and if you love red wine and cheese, a new study will come as music to your ears. Researchers from Iowa State University have revealed that drinking red wine and eating cheese can help to reduce cognitive(认知的) decline.
In the study, the researchers analyzed data from 1,787 adults aged 46 to 77, and asked them to complete questionnaires about their food and alcohol consumption. The results showed that cheese was the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, even into late life. Daily consumption of red wine was also shown to improve cognitive function, while weekly consumption of lamb was shown to improve long-term cognitive skills. However, over-consumption of salt was found to increase the risk of cognitive decline.
Dr. Auriel Willette, who led the study, said 揑 was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that appropriately eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current COVID-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world. Although we considered whether this was just due to what rich people eat and drink, clinical trials at random are needed to determine if making easy changes in our diet could help our brains in significant ways.
While the reason for the link remains unclear, the researchers believe that cheese and red wine may protect some people from the effects of Alzheimer's.
Brandon Klinedinst, an author of the study, added 揇epending on the genetic factors you carry, some individuals seem to be more protected from the effects of Alzheimer's, while others seem to be at greater risk. Perhaps the silver bullet we're looking for is improving how we eat. Knowing what that involves contributes to a better understanding of Alzheimer's and putting this disease in an opposite path.
32. What is the study mainly about?
A. Basic diets over the festive period.
B. Possible reasons for cognitive decline.
C. Feelings of pleasant music to people's ears.
D. Effects of certain diets on cognitive decline.
33. Which of the following increases the risk of cognitive problems?
A. Taking in too much salt. B. Eating cheese properly.
C. Drinking red wine daily. D. Consuming lamb weekly.
34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Changes in our diet help our brains in significant ways.
B. The diets of wealthy people were not taken into account.
C. The study results need to be proved by more clinical trials.
D. COVID-19 pandemic makes our world increasingly complex.
35. What does the underlined phrase 搒ilver bullet" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Genetic factor. B. Easy solution. C. Special metal. D. Certain food.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took place in a teacher's family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's favorite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor抯 cat jumped in from the window and he couldn抰 drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son抯 nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben抯 mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn抰 just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother抯 face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节(满分25分)
Possible version 1
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat! She praised her sons creativity and even encouraged him to write a detective story. The son was surprised. But before he could say anything, the mother continued, 揟his chocolate is a reward for your ability to repair the vase. A good effort! She added that although he repaired it only with glue, the cracks were almost invisible. The mother made no mention of her son抯 mistake, offering only encouragement and praise for his resourcefulness, along with chocolates as rewards.
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy抯 bad attitude disappeared. He tried to say something but his mother stopped him. She gave a soft kiss on his forehead and walked out of the room. After the incident, life at the home was the same as before. The only change was that the boy never lied again. Whenever he thought of lying, the chocolates would flash before him right away. The mother had corrected her son抯 mistake, not by blaming or punishment, but through rewards.
Possible version 2
The mother said, 揟his chocolate is a reward for your imagination -- a window-opening cat! Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. 揟his one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase. She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself more chocolates for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy抯 bad attitude disappeared. His palm and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. 揑抦 sorry I lied to you, mum. Please take back the chocolate. Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn抰 hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolates. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling. Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.

M: Thank you. It抯 a pleasure to be here.
W: Would you please share some advice about how to improve memory?
M: Well, we usually associate an unfamiliar term with what we have known to help with memory. But I抦 introducing a different way, singing.
W: Singing?
M: Yes. Singing is one of the earliest and most effective memory techniques that are used for memorizing concepts. And I sometimes 搒ing a list of historical facts and dates. It works.
W: How interesting! Any more tips?
M: Yes. Another one is to teach it. Teach whatever you want to remember. If you抮e studying for an English exam, teach the concepts to someone else. You can just imagine that someone is listening to you.
W: Thank you, David. Now we have a few listeners on the line and let抯 get their questions first.
