If there is one thing I’m sure about , it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers . It is not that newspapers are a necessity . Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio . Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday . But for most people a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation .
The nature of what is news may change . What basically makes news is what affects our lives—and the big political stories , the coverage of the wars , earthquakes and other disasters , will continue much the same . I think there will be more coverage of scientific research , though . It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives , like genetic engineering . In the future , I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are .
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from the Fleet Street and printed out in our own home . In fact , I’m pretty sure that is how it will happen in future . You will probably be able to choose from a menu , making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read —say, sports and international news .
I think people have got it wrong when they talk abut competition between the different media . They actually feed off each other . Some people once foresee that television would kill off newspapers , but that hasn’t happened . What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air . And as for the Internet , it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen .
36.What will probably be on in the newspapers made by yourself
A.Sports and international news . B.A menu of all the news .
C.The most important news .YCY D.What you’re interested in .
37.The word “feed off” in the last paragraph means _____- .
A.live on B.fight with C.depend on D.kill off
38.What is the best title for the passage
A.Newspapers—the Winner of Different Media .
B.The Future of Newspapers .
C.Make your Own Newspapers .
D.The Changes of Media .

As part of its ongoing effort to enlist children as the guardians (one who guards ) of the future in the fight to save the earth’s environment , the United Nations ecological agency has announced its annual painting competition on the theme of deserts and desertification (沙漠化).
“Children are an important part of our world . They are our future and often they are our conscience.” Klaus Toepfer , Executive Director of the UN Environmental Program (UNEP) said.
“Our children provide the inspiration , the enthusiasm and the idealism that this world needs. They know something needs to be done and we must listen to them . One way in which we can listen to them is by giving them the opportunity to express themselves in art—and by taking their art seriously .”

Beijing (AFP) Oct . 17, 2005 —China’s second manned space mission returned safely to Earth early Monday after a successful five –day flight , in the latest chapter in China’s ambitious drive to become a global space power .
Astronauts Fei Junling and Nie Haisheng were given a clean bill of health after the re-entry capsule (返回舱)of their Shenzhou VI spacecraft landed on Earth on a parachute , ending up in Inner Mongolia , Xinhua news agency said .
“Our journey in space was very smooth . The living and working conditions inside the cabin were very good , and our health is okay . Thanks ,” Fei said on state television , with a smile .
Appearing from the capsule , television pictures showed the two took a few seconds to adjust to the Earth’s gravity , before begin presented with flowers and waving to gathered recovery teams and ground control staff .
Mission control declared the 115-hour space flight a success , Xinhua reported .
A member of one of the recovery teams reported that the capsule landed upright after touching down at 4:32 am (20:32 GMT Sunday), just one kilometer (1,100 yards ) from the intended landing site , it added .
The flight was China’s second-ever manned space mission following the historic Shenzhou V, which in October 2003 made China the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the United States to put a man into space .
During his 21-hour first flight in 2003, astronaut Yang Liwei never left his seat in the re-entry capsule nor took off his space suit . In contrast , Fei and Nie’s flight saw them leave the re-entry capsule and enter the orbital capsule (轨道舱), taking off their heavy suits and putting on ordinary work clothes so they could move around easily.
To remove worries that China could use space for military purposes , Premier Wen Jiabao said the purpose of the mission was to conduct experiments “entirely for peaceful purposes.”
The Chinese government also hopes to use the manned space program to inspire patriotism (爱国精神) and instill a curiosity in science and technology among Chinese population .

52.What can you infer from the passage

B.Astronauts have to wear large and heavy space suits in pace all the time .
C.China wants to catch up with the United States and Russia in the field of space and controls the profitable field .
D.China must have had a good mastery of space technology by now .
53.Which of the descriptions about the astronaut (s) is TRUE
A.Yang Liwei’s health was not good enough to stay in space for more than one day .
B.Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng felt a little uneasy but soon got all right shortly after landing .
C.Yang Liwei occasionally left his seat in the re-entry capsule and took off his space suit .

Changes in People’s Diet in China
As can be seen from the table , changes have been taking place in people’s diet in China since 2001 . The consumption of grain and meat is decreasing year by year though grain is still the main food , while that of milk , fruit and vegetables , is increasing steadily . Besides , we can discover that the structure of diet is getting more and more reasonable and stable .
In my point of view , there are two major reasons for the changes . First , nowadays people can afford to buy milk and fruit once considered luxurious foods with the development of economy . Second , people are more concerned about the quality of diet . People have come to realise that eating too much meat results in some health problems while having more fruit and vegetables contributes to good health .
All in all , people’s living level has been greatly improved in the past five years . And we can expect that there will be a more healthy and proper diet for us . 牛津高三实验版模块九Unit2单元测试题

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good ,most would admit that their spoken English is poor .Whenever I speak to a Chinese student they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However ,their spoken English does not have to remain “poor” ! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First ,they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary .Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However ,you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive .Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second ,they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimesthey make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous .Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly .However ,in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across ,to talk to someone in English ,as quickly and as well as you can ,even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense ,but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening .You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth ,most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners .Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor .If you have this proactive outlook ,then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget what English you know .Remember : USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded. When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration(迁移)is probably the migration of the fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mice. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobsters(龙虾). Every year, when the season of bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel.
39.Most animals move from one place to another at a certain time to __________ .
A. give birth B. enjoy warmer weather C. find food more easily D. find beautiful places
40. The mice in northern Europe move when __________ .
A. they give birth B. the weather is bad
C. the place gets too crowded D. they haven’t enough food
41. The lobsters move __________ .
A. to the fresh water B. to the sea floor
C. to find more food D. at a certain time
42. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Animals move in order to find food more easily.
B. The migration of the fish called “salmon” is the most famous migration.
C. Living things move from one place to another because they like to travel.
D. Sometimes we know why and how living things move from one place to another but we don’t sometimes.

Machines in the home have a short history. Sewing machines, washing machines and tumble dries are common enough today, but a hundred years ago few people could even imagine such things. However, inventors have designed and built a wide range of household machines since then. In most cases the inventor tried to patent(申请专利)his machine, to stop anyone copying it. Then he tried to produce a lot of them. If the machine became popular, the inventor could make a lot of money.
In 1790 the first sewing machine was patented. The inventor was an Englishman called Thomas Saint. There was nothing to match his machine for forty years, and then someone built a similar device. He was a Frenchman, Bartelemy Thimonier. Neither of these early machines worked very well, however. It wasn’t until 1846 that an inventor came up with a really efficient(高效的)sewing machine. He was an American, Elias Howe and his machine was good enough to beat five skilled sewing women. He didn’t make much money from it, however. The first commercially(商业的)successful sewing machine was patented by Isaac Singer five years later.
Today, we take washing machines for granted, but there was none before 1869. The revolving drum(旋转桶)of that first machine set a pattern for the future, but it was crude by today’s standards. The drum was turned by hand, and needed a lot of effort. Eight years passed before someone produced an electric washing machine. The world had to wait even longer for a machine to dry clothes. The first spin-drier was another American invention, patented in 1924; but it was 20 years before such machines were widely used.
It was yet another American, called Bissell, who introduced the carpet sweeper. He patented the original machine back in 1876. It didn’t pick up dirt very well, but it was quicker than a dustpan and brush. Thirty-six years later, even the carpet sweeper was old-fashioned: modern homes now have a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器)with an electric motor to suck the dust.
43. Inventors patent the inventions so as to __________ .
A. produce more machines B. avoid being copied by others
C. make the inventions more popular D. make more money
44. Whose sewing machine could do far more than the work that was done by five skilled sewing women
A. Thomas Saint’s. B. Bartelemy Thimonier’s.
C. Elias Howe’s. D. Isaac Singer’s.
45. According to the article, modern inventors __________ .
A. follow the pattern of the first revolving drum but improve it much
B. only imitate the first washing machine
C. power the first ever-made washing machine by electricity
D. have to wait for the first spin-drier for a long time
46. The underlined word “crude” in the sentence “but it was crude by today’s standards”probably means __________ .
A. useless B. ugly-looking C. rough D. not skillfully made
47. The article mainly tells us about __________ .
A. the great inventors in the world
B. the important inventions in the world
C. the short history of household machines
D. the importance of the machines used in the home

The high noise of modern life may affect speech and language development in the very young, according to a study that found the auditory(听觉的)parts of the brains of young mice are slower to organize properly in the presence of continuous sounds.
Researchers at the University of California,San Francisco, reared a group of rats in an environment of continuous background noise and found that their brain circuits(电路)that receive and interpret(解释)sound did not develop at the same rate as animals that were raised in a quieter environment.
Edward F. Chang and Michael Merzenich,co-authors of the study appearing in the journal Science, said that the continuous noise delayed the organization of auditory neurons(神经细胞)during a critical two-to-three-week period after the rat pups were born.
For rats not exposed to the noise, the auditory cortex(皮层)neurons during this period gathered into a smaller area and began developing a selective response to sounds.
But for the noise-exposed rats, this organization was slowed, causing a delay in the development of the ability to discriminate(辨别)specific sound tones. The researchers said it took three or four times longer for the rats raised in a noisy environment to reach the basic bench marks(基准)of auditory development seen in the rat pups not exposed to noises.
Although the rat is not a perfect model for what happens in humans, the authors note, the study does suggest that high levels of noise might possibly affect some language learning in babies.
“These findings suggest that environmental noise, which is commonly present in contemporary child-rearing environments, can potentially contribute to auditory and language—related development delays,” the authors wrote in Science.
The authors noted that although the brain development was delayed in rats exposed to the noise, their brains did eventually mature(成熟的)normally.
48.The scientists at California University studied rats____________.
A.of different age groups B.with different habits
C.in different environments D.from different areas
49.The rats exposed to noise, compared to those not exposed,_________.
A. grew up more slowly B.were duller
C. were more sensitive D.gathered together more quickly

C.affects speech and language D.destroys brains
51.The findings of the research are said to have special connections with____________.
A.causes of noises B.medical science

How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time too much.
This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English:“Have a nice day” they speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, "I'll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area?I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains.
52. The first paragraph of the passage tells us that .
A. we always try to find some time to write a book
B. we always make plans but seldom fulfill them
C. we always enjoy many of life's best moments
D. we always do what we really want to do
53. The underlined phrase "turn his back on" (paragraph 6) most probably means .
A. leave for B. return to C. give up D. rely on
54. The man ( paragraph 6) left his first job partly because he was .
A. in an abnormal mental state B. under too much pressure
C. not well paid D. not respected
55. What is probably the best title for the passage
A. Provide Homes For Our Family B. Take Up Horse-riding
C. Value This Very Day D. Stay Alive

On Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we’d have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day. Sunday couldn’t have been more different — clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still -25°C.
Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we’d been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling — more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.
Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We’d been told that then they were nursing their chicks (刚孵出的幼雏) and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose (摆姿势) for photos.
Before heading back, we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically (明显地) since our last visit.
It was such a nice day.

D. They didn’t believe what they were told.
39. The six people did the following during the trip EXCEPT _____.
A. feed the penguins
B. take pictures of the penguins

It was a firm belief among the ancient Chinese that there was life after death. In order to have a better life in the next world after his death, Qin Shihuang started the construction of a mausoleum (陵墓) — a project that took 37 years to complete. He was fully aware of the importance of armed forces, and in order to protect him in the afterlife, he had images made of his troops, which were buried near him to guard his soul. The terracotta army was thus formed.
The Qin figures are of high artistic value as sculptures of human figures, and are a landmark in the historical development of ancient sculpture in China. They emphasise the revelation of the subjects’ inner world through their
facial expressions. The large numbers reflect the centralized authority in China’s feudal society, serving as a typical example of the different styles of sculpture between East and West.
The Qin warrior figures show distinctive individual personalities, with different facial expressions. For instance, a face with a broad forehead, high cheekbones, thick brows, large eyes and stiff beard is the face of a strong and fearless man, whereas a round face with regular features reveals an honest and open-hearted character. An oval face with fine features shows a gentle disposition(性情). Then there is a square face with honest simplicity clearly written all over it. The young soldiers generally have chubby faces, and are smiling naively (天真地). The older soldiers, with lined foreheads, appear to be weather-
-beaten veterans who have seen much of the world.
44. The Emperor Qin Shihuang made images of his armed forces in order to ______.
A. show how aware he was of their importance
B. guard his body in the mausoleum after he died

New Zealand fishermen caught what may prove to be a world-record-breaking colossal squid (巨大的鱿鱼).
In the cold, dark waters of the Antarctic hides a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles (触须) and eyes as big as dinner plates. Sound like something out of a science fiction movie Think again.
On February 21, New Zealand fishermen landed a colossal squid the length of a school bus. They had been fishing with long lines for Chilean sea bass (黑鲈) in the waters off the coast of New Zealand when they caught the rare squid. With two hours of hard work, the crew skillfully pulled the creature into a net and dragged it aboard their ship.
Scientists estimate (估计) that the animal weighs about a half ton and is about 40 feet long. That would make this colossal squid the biggest on record.
First identified in 1925 after two tentacles were found in a whale’s stomach, the colossal squid has long been a mystery. The animals are not easy to observe because they can go down to ocean depths of 6,500 feet. What scientists do know from studying the bodies of a half dozen colossal squids is that they are fierce hunters.
The recently captured colossal squid has been frozen to keep it for scientific study. It will be transported to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, in the capital city of Wellington. Experts believe it to be the first adult male ever caught undamaged. Scientists hope to learn more about the colossal squid’s diet, behavior and reproductive (繁殖) patterns.
“Scientists will be very interested in this amazing creature,” said New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton. “It adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment.”
48. Why is it usually difficult for experts to observe the squid
A. Because it moves too fast. B. Because it is too large.
C. Because it is very dangerous.
D. Because it can go down to deep ocean.
49. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The squid is from a science fiction story.
B. The fishermen often meet colossal squids.
C. Scientists know much about the colossal squid.

Have you ever heard the saying “All roads lead to Rome” At one time, this was pretty much true. During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier. This construction work went on for five centuries! If all the roads built during the Roman Empire were put together end to end, they would circle the equator twice.
The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (监督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. The first layer was made of sand. Next, the builders added rocks and rubble. On top of these materials came gravel. On this solid foundation, the road builders placed paving stones.
Also, Roman roads were cambered. This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag pattern to make the road rise gradually.
All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousands paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, who was emperor at the time, the road’s destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers.
Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts of Roman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive accomplishments of the Roman Empire.

The Ancient City of Pingyao
The Ancient City of Pingyao is in the center of China’s Shanxi Province. Though first built between 827-782 BC, it retains its image of a county seat of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911AD).
The city is protected by a wall of about 12 meters in height, and a moat of about three meters deep and three meters across. Outside the city gate is a drawbridge. The inside of the city consists of four main streets, eight side streets and 72 lanes. Of the 3,797 original quadrangle houses, all built of the same black bricks and gray tiles, over 400 are still in good condition.
The Ancient City of Pingyao was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as an outstanding example of a Han Chinese city of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
